DeWalt DW735 Planer Dust Port Upgrade

I walk through why I feel the dust port on the DeWalt DW735 planer is a design flaw and install the straight dust port from Explosive Workshop etsy.me/3xbFYa1
After running for a while I felt like the motor smells warm and decided to add the fan back in the housing to help cooling.

I also use the top of the planer to lay boards on after they have passed thru. Then I walk back around and pick them off the top and don't have to carry them around - especially helpful with long boards. The top ejection scheme would interfere with that.

Nice upgrade. Can I ask what the digital read out is on the thickness guage? RIght in front of the wheel?

That's a gauge from Wixey. You get a lot more accurate and consistent thickness measurements compared to the one from Dewalt.

I respect everyones right to make whatever upgrades ???? they want, but I'm in the group that would NOT do this. The dust collection hose getting the way has not been an issue for me so why fix something that isn't broken? All that being said I did learn a little bit from the video about the machine so I do thank you for that.

Its like making a fast car even faster, better... If the motor isnt fighting the load of pushing chips it can cut easier.... If it has more energy to cut, it cuts better... If the motor has a easier load, in theory it will last longer... This particular upgrade I would leave the fan blade on though, its critical to motor cooling even if not used for chip ejection... Nothing wrong with the if its not broke dont fix it philosophy though. Happy wood working!

Definitely made the right call putting the impeller back on the motor I think. It's used for both dust extraction and cooling. You could probably take it out if you still had dust collection hooked to the original port because it would pull air over the motor and cool it. I'm working on a similar idea right now from left over ducting parts so we'll see how it goes. Seems good so far. Good video.
@cassandraroads5461

Just a suggestion (I haven't tried it): Put a cover over the dust chute intake port on the fan body. This should reduce the loading of the motor, reduce the noise and probably improve the cooling air flow through the motor. However, like William James in his comment, I use the top as a temporary storage location, while I plane the work-pieces. So, the change in the video is not happening on my 735.
@vidpromjm
@vidpromjm 2 года назад
Cool idea and thanks for sharing but I do think you should edit in a text screen to the video before you close stating that your reinstalled the impeller due to thermal concerns. Not everyone will click the""more" button. There was another youtuber who removed the impeller but they kept the original airway and their vac system provided enough airflow to keep things cool. edit: Or just pin a comment to the top here explaining the potential issue

I try to avoid un-necessary work and tasks. (& expenses too) When I hook my dust collection up, I simply bungee cord the tube up and out of the way. (btw, looks like you need to do the same as yours impedes you walking front to back during planing which is un-avoidable) Mine is mounted to the mobile OEM cart, and when stowed away, I simply use 1 short bungee (over the top where you put your hole) to hold the feed/export tables upright. Peace

Hi very creative and nice presentation. I have one question. What are those white panels on your garage door ? Do they reduce noise from going outside ? If so I would appreciate to let me know the name, the percentage of reduction in noise going outside, where I can get them , and an approximate cost. Thank you

Well first thing. Your running the board through and not cutting just rolling lol. Second i have seen so many of these videos crying about the port in the way of the trayif you wind up the planner the tray will work fine! ( im glad at the end it used the blades a tiny bit ). Lastly they make a hook attachment that holds thhose off to the side. And it can work on ether side. ( 35 bucks)

these people keep trying to sell items claiming to fix 1 issue and not explain that its cause multiple. the dam planer is ok from factory as is ...the blower is a plus as you wont need to worry about hooking it up to any vacuum.. i can imagine if your vaccum system not working 1 day or you have to work on another location the planer would be in operable as it wouldn't be able to expel dust🤷‍♂. its also blocking the over head where naturally it an over pass for work pieces. i can recall u giving 1 reason for this mod and thats because you cant store planer up to the wall ... you can store it side ways to wall or just take off the dam support bed (easy on and off procedure) please dont waste your money to buy this mod and to destroy youe planer as i doubt i would buy it with that hole in it.... 3d print a cover so the need to damage origanal cover is not neccesary......... but then again they would charge a arm and a leg for these plastic piece 🤣

Don’t put money out for this piece of junk. DeWalts customer service is very poor. Mine hade 15 minutes total of light duty and it popped the breaker each time I used it. The belt melted off planing a 4 inch wide piece of pine. Dewalt did nothing.

I wouldn't do this to mine, but if people watching are considering this, it would only work decently with a shelix cutter head. One of the things the integrated blower does is chop up the long chips that come off the standard knives. Also, if your purpose for this change is mostly to allow the outfeed table to fold up, wouldn't it be easier to cut a clearance hole in the outfeed table?
@7mmSTW154

I just experienced this tonight on my first use of this adapter. I was planing 1x6” cherry wood that was air dried over 10 years at this point. I did get some clogging issues on a short straight run of 4” hose. I was taking a little bigger bite with the planer, but I know the difference of that and way too much. Maybe 1/32” on a cherry 1x6” isn’t overdoing it. The planer will handle much more than that. I did however get less saw chips blowing around on the infeed table. I’d like to add a shelix cutter head someday so that should solve the clogging issue.
@rexseven93
@rexseven93 2 года назад
l really don't see the point of this revision. Mine works great as and I just don't mind the table not folding up. A 90 Degree elbow handles dust extraction just fine. It is something they should have thought about, but it's far from a deal killer and the unit is still superior to any other benchtop planer I've used. It is almost a category between standing and benchtop.

You don’t need to cut any clearance holes for the outfeed table to fold up - just raise the height until it clears.

I seriously doubt that plastic impeller is chopping up any long chips. It wouldn't last very long doing that. My Delta planer with straight blades doesn't make long stringy chips. I doubt the Dewalt does either.

If this works for you, great, but for me no. You can't use the top of the machine to slide boards back to the feed side, especially big material. You've disabled a perfectly good chip ejector. Compromised motor cooling. Just use an elbow or bungees to route the hose. As far as having to pop off the original port to fold the table, how long did that take?

For those of you with a 3d printer...make a fan just like the original but do not make the blades for chip extraction. The blades that face the motor are used for motor cooling, The other side of the fan is used for chip extraction. Just make the outside of the fan smooth so it does not act like a chip extractor. This should keep the part the same size but is only used to cool the motor.

@ZomBeatBrainZ
@ZomBeatBrainZ 2 года назад
Seaman Custom Builds @ 6:00 min the holes surrounding the fan blade shaft on the motor is where it gets the cooling from. Pulls air through the motor, does not blow on or into the motor. That’s how it’s able to extract chips and cool at the same time. I wouldn’t run it for extended periods without first checking to see how hot the motor gets. Looking at the fan housing, it almost looks like you could unbolt it and rotate it to redirect the exhaust up.

Just put that upgrade from Jacob on my planer. Like literally 5 minutes ago. Major improvement. I have a Rockler wall mount dust collector (the 650 cfm one) and it picks up all but a tiny bit of the chips, actually more than it did from the original port. Sound level, if it is different, it's so minor as to be unnoticeable. I'll someday cut the hole in the top plate and put that back on.

Can you tell me why there were more chips on the planer after you removed the fan blades? Also, I didn't quite understand why you wanted to remove them?
@seamancustombuilds2553
@seamancustombuilds2553 2 года назад
I removed the fan for a couple reason, mainly it is no longer needed for chip ejection and is just blowing a large amount of air into the shop and could stir up dust, also this would hopefully provide more power to the cutter head if needed since there isn’t resistance from the fan blades. It’s also quieter without the fan.

Seems like it’s still throwing out chips from the front. And that’s with a narrow board. Now try a full size board and make it an epoxy and wood board and see what happens. That’s the real challenge. Epoxy, when planed , becomes statically charged and sticks. It gums up and blocks everything. So the real question if any of these videos are worth it is to test it against that level and do an epoxy board.

ummm, just an elbow pointing up off the stock port? no modifying the case and the hose is outa the way, likely even more so watching you use it as it seems to be right in the way as you reach around the grab the piece coming out. Fan cools motor as well as chip extraction. This is a cool idea, but seems like a lot of extra work to accomplish no real benefits .. I guess the table flip, but I don't bother with that.
