Here's a quick video of how I improved my Dewalt Planer DW735 exhaust chip collection into a simple DustRIGHT 30 micron, 15 gallon bag! This modification not only allows my shop vacuum to hook up to the exhaust it also allows for the DustRIGHT bag!
We would greatly appreciate your support by using the link below for all your future Amazon.com purchases. It will be totally transparent to your Amazon shopping, and doesn’t cost you a thing!

We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives ru-vid.comUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.

Liked your idea, so I made one similar to yours. My only change was instead of screwing the coupling to the wood adapter (4:50), I coated the inside of the adapter with construction adhesive. Once dried, it's a permanent fit. I can never remove the coupling from the adapter, but no need to. The other mod I did was instead of using the drawstring on the bag, I used a hose clamp, much more secure.

I have a similar setup for my DW735, the main difference is I put a cyclone separator between the bag and the planer to catch 98+ percent of the chips and avoid having to empty the bag so often. Its a little clumsy to set up but collects chips very well. Nothing can make chips faster than a thickness planer.

Good idea. The only change I will make is to double elbow it so the bag sits fully upright on the floor to take any weight off the exit port of the DW735 and so the top of the bag is not folded over.

I have a Shop Vac with a Hepa filter mounted on top of my 55 gal steel drum separator. I use the same hose (20’ Center) on my planer that I use on everything else (track saw, Domino, Kreg Foreman, miter saw, table saw, router table, drum sander, drill press table, etc). I use an auto start switch to control the dust collector.

Excellent idea Charles! I have been dropping out most of my dust into a 55 gal plastic drum. I still needed a way to trap the dust coming out of the drum. This bag is the perfect solution. Charles would you happen to know what the diameter of the wood adapter you turned on the lathe for the bag to attach to? At any rate thanks for your video!!

Hi very nice presentation and I really enjoyed it. I have two questions. 1- I do not have any available space for a planer in my garage and I live in Southern California by the beach. I was wondering if I put my planer on a cart with wheels , make a plywood cover for the cart with five sides and put the cover on the top of the cart and in addition put a cover like barbecue cover over it , would it be protected from rust ? 2- Can I run 2X4 vertically through planer ? I would appreciate your input. Thanks.

I have the same planer (awesome choice, by-the-way). I use a very similar 90 degree elbow but opted for the much cheaper "Pillowcase and Duct Tape" system. MUCH cheaper.
@ginoasci2876

Interesting solution, my question is, I have the 5-micron Dust Right bag hooked up to the same planner. I have found it almost impossible to empty it, both from the round top and the zipper bottom without causing a "Giant" mess. The outside is stuck with debris and the inside doesn't empty very well or easy. I am about one step from throwing it away, help.

Great idea Charles. How has this been working out for you? I tried to make a dust collector using a shop bucket but it fills up very quickly, and was not an ideal solution. Using the Dustright bag looks like it might work much better.
@nathanmarshall7523

I use a big shop vac instead of the bag. Dewalt sells a adapter that will turn on the wet vac through a different circuit whenever the planer is turned on.

I have the same Dewalt planer and it works great. So much so, that it doesn't take long to fill a average sized dust collection bag which, when full, does weigh a bit. Have you had any problems with the weight of the bag as it fills up putting to much stress on the elbow and particularly, the exhaust port?
@richardmarsh3312
@richardmarsh3312 6 лет назад
I wonder too. While this seems like a good idea, but when using my DW735, my much larger collection bag fills up so quickly that I'm not sure this is an efficient alternative.
@charlescoushaine
@charlescoushaine 6 лет назад
Great question! Luckily my planer stand (from my old planer) allows my collection bag to just touch the ground when nearly full, and the rubber couplings allow it to move slightly without putting much stress on the exhaust port.

This is a marvelously clever solution to a very real problem! Thank you for posting. One thing, though, that 90-degree elbow does not appear to be 4". Might it actually be a 2-1/2" elbow? I'll be duplicating this dust collection system on my DW735X and want to make sure I order the correct parts.

Charles Coushaine thanks. I should have been clearer. Do you think a 5 micron bag is unnecessary since the chips will be bigger not saw dust?
@charlescoushaine
@charlescoushaine 5 лет назад
@@ot9180 I feel that the 30 micron is perfect since the chips are larger as you stated, and a 5 micron might plug up too quickly based on the high volume of air shot out of this planer.

Can anyone help me out? I have this same dewalt planer and been using a big dust collection bag attached to it. However, 80% of the wood chips are Coming out THE FRONT of the planer- where I feed the wood through. Not out the wood chip chute. I checked for obstruction and it’s clear and open. Any idea why? Thanks!

I purposely used the 2.5" port so that I could remove the DustRight bag and hook up my vacuum to the coupling if the occasion called for it.

This is a good idea, however it can be much more simplified by just using a 4" hose and go straight into the bag. I got a 10' hose and can just put the bag in a trashcan (to help keep it upright) and run the hose straight into the bag.

You could have just clamped 6" bag fabric to 4", without any adapter, as it is nice and flexible. Bigger problem is the full bag weight. I would imagine it needs support on the bottom. Also, 6" bag opening is too small to remove the shaving out of the bag efficiently.
@chelle7362
@chelle7362 3 года назад
Why couldn't you just cinch the bag up instead of all that?

@corin164
@corin164 5 лет назад
Daniel, go to Lowes or HD and wander over to the section that sells metal sheet exhaust fittings. I found a 6" to 4" reducer/adapter that will do the job. The 735 Planer's exhaust outlet is also 4" which you can connect directly to the reducer/adapter or to a 4" spiral wound flex hose which you then can connect to the reducer adapter. The bag can then be connected to the 6" port of the reducer/adapter. Problem solved, I don't have a lathe either.

Takes 8 weeks to get here and there is no belt tensioner and you need a fucking c clamp to bend the planet shaft to get the belt on. It’s the dumbest fucking design ive ever seen and I install electric motors for a living.
