Diabetes alert dogs are usually service dogs being trained that are found to have the ability to detect and alert so they further train the dog how to alert either their human, or in an emergency find another human. Most diabetes service dogs don't even need to be trained in the ability to detect these chemical imbalances, just in when and how to alert people to it. :)

I am too a type one diabetic and my life long goal is to have a service dog. Unfortunately my family cannot afford one and are unable to make a "go fund me" page.my reason behind wanting the dog is because I cannot feel my lows I have been in a very dangerous situations and still have not been able to sense the low. Maybe some day there will be a cheaper option for a diabetic alert dog

Just a note to any people slightly uneducated to the topic, if you ever see a service dog in public with their owner please do not pet it or try to get it's attention! It's against the law for one, and for two their owner could suffer from something and if their dog is distracted it might not be able to help. Please don't tell your kids or friends it's okay to pet them. If the owner says no, or nothing, then don't. Also it's actually really helpful to give them space, especially for people with bad anxiety. 💜 stay safe 💜

@White Pride His actions of speech make as much sense as your comment does. I’m praying you’re high or on the wrong video. Anyways, he doesn’t have the opportunity to check his blood every 5 minutes, and blood sugar can drop increasingly fast, so the dog’s job is to sense a seizure or the situation where he would faint before it happens.

Katherine Grimes if you were told by a doctor or medical professional that you are disabled, or something interferes with daily life tasks, then under the ADA (americans with disabilities act) you qualify for a service dog. service dogs aren’t just handed out to people who want to bring a dog everywhere. having a service dog isn’t fun and entertaining. they are there to do a job. having a service dog comes with so many things to worry about too. like public access issues, people petting and distracting the dog, and just the overall hassle of having another being beside you at all times.

I would want to give my cousin a service dog for his type one diabetes because he's only 4 years old and his blood sugar is wild. He's already had a few seizures from lows, so having a service dog for him would honestly help me sleep at night knowing he is safer.

I look at everything as a challenge, you say I can't do it , I'll prove you wrong. Unless you want me to make insulin or like bred and butter pickles. Don't let it run your life , take control and kick it's ass. Insulin pump also helps me beyond belief.

Ja Z Have you ever tried a CGM. Great technology. I really let's you control your blood sugars better and you can see what your body actually does in real time. For me, mine has always been pretty accurate. Tho I think a service dog add a second layer of protection. CGM is great and gives you all this data about you blood sugar. But service dog can alert people for help in case of emergencies and I think having a dog encourages people to be more active which is always a benefit. I imagine someone like you would love a CGM so that you can take a quick glance at your phone or receive and know your blood sugar is stable before any activity. Also mean you prick your finger less.

Here's the quoting. "There are individuals and organizations that sell service animal certification or registration documents online. These documents do not convey any rights under the ADA and the Department of Justice does not recognize them as proof that the dog is a service animal." my parents were going to get me a Service dog for my Anxiety and Self Harm issues but it costs way to much so they just got me a normal dog who turns out to be a biting, whiney, loud dog that gives me stress

You should get a sugar glider, they're really cute and rarely bite and soft!
@AtarahDerek

Then they should've been more choosey at the shelter. Find a sweet tempered rescue dog and work extensively with it to forge a bond. Then train it to use specific comfort measures when you have an episode. Also train it to focus entirely on you when it's working. While a vest is not required for identifying a service dog, it can help the dog understand when it's supposed to be working and ignoring distractions around it. Once you've bonded with your service dog, trained it to ignore distractions, and task trained it to respond to your episodes, read up on ADA law regarding service animals, then start training your dog in public access. This really is more of a training process for the humans in your community. You will have to remind people repeatedly that yours is a working animal, and they cannot distract it. If someone tries to deny you public access because of your dog, instruct them on the proper way to question handlers about their service animals. Be patient but firm.

Ok first of all sugar glider's cannot be service animals. Secondly, she/he is specifically talking about service animals, not your average exotic pet's.

Ok, I have type 1 diabeties as well, and this is kinda inaccurate. Even with a dog, you still need to check your BG levels. He is also exaggerating the severity of his condition, trust me, all diabetics do it
@lakinbassler5118
@lakinbassler5118 7 лет назад
Ireland Perri you need to no matter what but this dog helps so when your out and if you can’t feel when you’re low or high the dog can alert. Some dogs can also call 911 and retrieve things like snacks from the fridge.

My family used to have a cat named Garfield that if my mom's sugar dropped he would headbutt her hand to get her to check her sugar. He saved her life at night when all of us was asleep and my mom's sugar dropped to 17. If he didn't wake her up, she would possibly died in her sleep. He wasnt trained or anything, just a normal housecat that saved my mom's life.

One of my friends has Type 1 diabetes, and he has a golden retriever named Peyton. She's a very friendly animal, and because she gets a bit antsy sometimes and walks around where ever he is sitting, people think it's okay to pet Pey or grab her tail when his back is turned. Once, she was gone for about 2 weeks for training because they had been petting her too much.

I'm 19 and also a type 1 diabetic and it's a real hassle, I work a factory job were it gets upwards of 110° degrees plus and I sweat alot and really active on the job and my sugar tends to go low a couple times a day, so I carry my meter and something to eat bring it up. But it is cool that diabetes is finally being recognized by the public by seeing how troublesome it really is.

Papillons are great, they are one of the few small dogs that are rarely yappy, snippy or get “little dog syndrome”. Very great therapy dogs and service dogs.

Well during sleep's some T1D kid's have gone into coma's and have died, or their heart or kidneys gave up and killed them in their sleep because their bp/Bs went too high or low. Some are more serious than other's. Be glad you're not the one who has a chance of dying in your sleep because of T1D.
