In Taryl's 5th and final installment to his October month-long spooktacular extravaganza, "Andy Squared", Taryl shows you how to properly diagnose a transmission problem and replace the trans pulley on a John Deere LT160 (but will also work on many other models too) riding mower. Got a question for you about a JD155 lawn tractor. I replaced a transmission belt and worked fine till I got about half way through my yard and then it wants to act like the belt is lose pedals don't seem as stiff any ideas ? Can it bee the spring

Yes it could be. You may not have hooked that spring back far enough....its a really long spring and I use a ratchet strap to stretch it back to where it belongs

I had the same problem with my LT160. I watched this video and thanks to Taryl I changed my pulley and sure enough it fixed my problem. Runs like new! There's your dinner!

Thanks slot I fixed my John Deere , I check the pulley and it was tight, but then I look and seen there was no belt! The belt came off and was underneath the pulley! So I put it back on! All good, couldn't have fixed without this video!!

Good thing the metal in the pulley is softer than in the splined shaft, makes for a cheaper fix. Great job guys! 🍺🍺🍺🍺

Spot on repair guidance. Was having transmission nightmares. Fixed my Deere x300 for $35. The pulley teeth are softer than the drive shaft teeth. Actually good engineering, but if you don't know that you could be spending big bucks fer nuttin'. Thanks guys (and a trip to the orthodontist wouldn't be a waste of time).

My J D is an old one (240) made back in 87 I live in the top half of N C and traveled to the bottom half of GA. to pick it up. My son thought me crazy to buy a rust bucket as we were loading it on the pickup. I have a 6x12 cargo trailer I need to move around the yard and the plastic yard machines are not heavy enough to do the job. I had to replace the drive belt and was worried about that but J D made that year's idiot proof to do, I only had to loosen two pullies and remove a shield, took all of ten minutes. The new ones today is an all day job.

what will help that new pulley last longer is to grease it on assembly, for an existing tractor with that pulley- lay some oil on the top and let it soak. Same principle on everything that moves. Lubricant prevents chafing/ wear. Mike

I have the same noise on my X320. I believe my pulley has a bearing on it as it sounds exactly like a besring going bad. My fix will be slightly more difficult 🙃 . Thanks Taryl!

Taryl - love your videos. On my LT166 the fan on top of the transmission stops rotating when the machine is driven forwards against a stationary object (wall) ... my test case for lack of power. Gut feeling is this means my problem is the pulley on the engine, rather than the one of the transmission (drive belt has heaps of tension). Any videos on replacing the engine pully?

Bet that input shafts splines are worn down a bit. 1 more pulley n the input shaft will need replaced too.

OK that was a bit TOO corny. If the shaft splines are worn, get an all steel pulley with correct groove and diameter and tack weld it to the shaft in 4 places. GOOD tacks, not gorilla welds.

my tractor craftsman starts but at the time of removing the foot of the clutch, it turns off in neutral or at a speed, which you think is failing. Thanks friend for your videos.

I have an LT150 and almost the same unit. I have a snap ring pliers and chose the smallest pins but still too large. Does JD have tiny pliers? Any suggestions?

Hi. I’ve just bought a John Deere lx279. Have problem with the forward and reverse pedal. When you press forward pedal the tractor goes backwards very fast and when you press reverse pedal goes forward very slow. Any idea what happen? Many thanks

Hey Taryl I changed the hydrostatic oil on my LA120. Put everything back as per your video. Which by the way kicks ass! But now my mower won't move forward or backwards! Can you please give me some trouble shooting?

Grease without seals or caps attracts and retains abrasive dirt and becomes lapping compound in a manner of speaking.

Can you do a video on how to replace the trans shock or damper or whatever its called. I can see it in this video on the frame. I have an LT155 but mine is bolted on the outside of the frame rather than the inside like on this tractor. I just don't know if I need any special tools to remove it and put the new one on.

Hey there!, I did a rebuild on the transmission on my JD LT150 and somehow I messed up something on it. My pedals are reversed! The forward pedal makes it go backwards and the reverse pedal makes it go forwards! ... I'm hoping you might be able to give me an idea of what I screwed up...

I need to do this on my LT160 but that ring is so tiny and I can’t seem to get the stupid pliers in the holes it seems even the smallest ones I have won’t go in the holes easily. Struggling with this. Does anyone have a recommendation for a ring tool that will make this easy.

I have notice my hydrostatic trans is still strong but does not active till I put the stick down to about half way and is not as fast but still pulls good on hill but not that fast any ides?!?

I have JD stx 38. While cutting the lawn it stopped moving. The blades continue to spin. No forward or reverse. The drive belt smokes at the front pully Any ideas??

@@Roboticdoughbull3k definitely remember removing the deck and belt I can't remember if it was a stick stuck somewhere or I just replaced the belt. Sorry for lack of memory. Good luck with yours. Haven't messed with mine yet this year. Hope I can get it going as it is a good mower.

Drain the tank . remove line at filter and put it in a suitable container and wrap a rag around the air hose and shove it in the tank. Blow carefully.

I hope Taryl can help me figure out where the ground drive belt tension spring goes on my Craftsman 917188740 garden tractor goes. The spring broke so the mower would not move. I cannot find a diagram showing where this spring goes. When I took the broken spring off I did not pay attention to where the good end was still attached because I was sure the Sears parts diagram would show where it goes, but it does not? Please do not answer by telling me all about the blade drive belt on the deck. Taryl would not do that but many guys would. Taryl is a regular Eli Whitney on a lawn mower. He can fix a small engine like nobody's business. I am hoping someone can help me out. I have looked everywhere and found nothing. This is a 54" cut 27HP Garden Tractor apparently made by Husqvarna. I looked for information on Husqvarna and also could not find anything.

Hey taryl great channel. My lt160 has spongy pedals! I cut the grass cut the mower off, came back cranked it and all of a sudden the pedals are spongy...any help would be appreciated, thanks Paul
