Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Every line needs to move the story forward except when Quentin Tarantino writes it.
@Sahuagin

exactly what I was thinking, that Tarantino is a kind of exception. basically dialogue for dialogue's sake, since good dialogue is intrinsically enjoyable. it does still build the relationship of the two people though.

Dialogue to me is the same as noticing a designer of fashion. You know what texture they like and flow of draping, but with that becomes the danger of deliberate expectations and normality. Sorkin does this. I recognize his language right away, same beat and quick wit. Repetitive use of lines as well. Still, he is a great writer and keeps ADHD listeners entertained. He found his niche.

Same with the way he describes how dialogue should be almost musical. I realized I was already doing that, but still it helps to realize dialogue isn't just a flat, boring IRL conversation but part of a work of art...

Tarantino is definitely a genius when it comes to dialogue because it is everything Scott says it should not be but yet the story still moves and is hella entertaining. Rules are meant to be broken otherwise everything will be like Anaconda 3 or whatever

@RawHeadRay

It's got to be naturalistic too,i turned off two films this week where the dialog literally was the first draft script, it sounded like the character hadn't evolved in the writers mind since that placeholder dialog was just dropped in there, usually if you write for long enough on a script the characters evolve and you learn what they would really say , this wasn't someone talking in the real ( even Movie world) this was words were just happening because other people in other movies say this here. Get to know these characters, get inside their heads.But worse than pretend talky bits in shite movies is ( first of all the Director not changing it to make it more naturalistic) When some arsehole character says something that is specifically said to move the story forward and it makes you feel stupid for having heard it based on some screenplay that thinks you're stupid.

I think Clerks is interesting. When a movie is all dialogue you have to make it as entertaining as possible and still have a purpose. Most of the dirty jokes and lurid stories do ultimately drive the narrative.

A good exercise, at least to start, is to try to write the scene without dialogue, whole thing physical action and blocking.

There's no single movie that's just got the best dialogue ever... There's a reasonable list for good studies, I'm sure... If I had to pick just one, probably "Reservoir Dogs"... stick with me. Tarantino specifically took this movie and encapsulated the ENTIRE thing into one room, told through the interactions and dialogue between five Characters... AND he tells of a failing bank heist, hostage situation, with all the unnecessary graphic violence of a psycho group walking into a crowded building and opening up with machineguns... That dialogue deconstructed and studied is going to HAVE to have just about everything you need mechanically to get into Good... perhaps not Great or The Best... but Good dialogue. You don't get to see the bank heist. You get to see a car sitting in front of the bank, alarms, gun REPORTS... then some shots (including projectiles) and the robbers coming out, one wounded... Okay it sets you up from the start with a "Heist" trope... obvious enough "robbery gone wrong". They get to the garage... and that's it. Through the rest of the movie, everything you get to know has to come from the weird mix of what's being said, what's insinuated, and what's strictly avoided... You learn the Characters inside and out, history, personality, the reasoning into the job, the screwing up... the psycho... and it has a conclusion before they leave. ;o)

@@VIK_1903 That IS an excellent choice. Another great bit of dialogue in storycraft. I only went with Tarantino for being a bit more recent (more viewers would know instantly)... Highly agree with the choice... Maybe some of us should toss together some best dissection-worthy dialogue entries... Because "12 Angry Men" would have to hit such a list in the top two or three, for sure. I THINK(?) Cinefix did a Top (something like 5?) List of Movies for best dialogue, but I can't exactly recall... That's where I go for "short lists to study" in movies... Watchmojo is okay for pop-reference, but crap to study by... Cinefix (yeah, btw... YT channel) do a thoughtful and careful descriptive run-down as to why they make each choice... If you haven't checked them out (nothing against FilmCourage of course) they're worth quite a bit of looking. ;o)

I think this is just a little confusing. Conversation is dialogue if you have a story. Real life, movies whatever. If there's a story, everything a character says has value. But like he said, you don't have time so you have to trim it. If in life a story happens within an hour and a half, then you can copy and paste that into film and have a movie. I think so at least ...

@@HKasian i still dont really agree with you. A lot of his movies sound very conversational, yet none of dialogue is wasted. The cheeseburger convo at the beginning of pulp fiction seems completely meaningless until it comes up again when Sam Jackson questions Brett. Hateful Eight is a lot of brilliant subtext and conversation that pushes the story forward. What of the advice given has Tarantino not put in his movies? Im genuinely curious bc he might have a perspective about dialogue we all need to go and study
