What an honest and holistic descripition of breath and (your) posture. It is so important to see the full picture. Not only that kind of breath, not even just breath, but diet, but posture, but me-Time, healing trauma and so on... and then also to not be machines with plans for everything but with a bit of easy going and kindness for imperfection. :)

Hi @andykoller6295 Nice to hear from you!😊I'm so glad this resonated with you. I think all of us drawn to the healing arts have some version of a story very similar to yours and/or mine. All the little components add up, and we all find our way bit by bit. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I'm happy to hear from you. Have a great day!

What about Wim Hoff breathing ? What is the difference ?
@BELightTT
@BELightTT 2 месяца назад
Hi @lori5946 So, this video is really trying to define functional breathing for daily life activities. Wim Hof Breathing is a technique. It is certainly not "functional breathing", meaning you would never breathe that way all day every day. It is a short-term intervention designed to elicit a specific response. In this video, I'm more so trying to dissect how we should be breathing every moment of every day (OUTSIDE of our particular breathing practices i.e. Wim Hof Method), to be as efficient, resilient and healthy as possible. From the technique side, with my clients and students, I don't teach any hyperventilation techniques, as it is counter-productive to their personal goals. But if hyperventilation techniques like WHM seem to be getting you the results you want, that's fantastic!! I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching. Have a great day!

Wow, this brings up a lot of stuff. When I consider functionality I try and think adaptive rather than rigid. So your picture of flexible and appropriate for the situation in hand totally works for me. I agree there is a danger with functional breath work of people becoming straight jacketed by the exercises due to a misunderstanding that correcting over breathing means…you will never breath hard. That’s just not physiologically possible huh! So, when I begin my workout at the gym, I can go on a cross trainer for 20-30 mins and breathe through my nose 4/4 or 5/5. Then I can mess about with breath retentions whilst doing some lifting on weight machines. But after 45-50 mins and I’m doing my last 5 minute jog/sprint on a treadmill to finish, I will probably be breathing hard through my mouth. I ain’t holding my breath for shit either 😂! So it’s horses for courses. One thing I tell my clients is breath into your whole body. Every organ. Every tissue. Every cell. Not just the diaphragm although, yes, the diaphragm is important when beginning the task of correcting high up, hyperventilative 13:09 chest breathing. All this also makes me think of the link between breathing and Heart Rate Variability. How a healthy heart 💓 is one that can respond to change. Very much at odds with the misconception that a rock steady, low heart rate is somehow healthy and means you’re physically fit. Complete nonsense in fact. My heart rate varies from 55 resting to 165 during exercise! It needs to respond fast not be steady in such circumstances depending on metabolic demand. So…I kinda like the idea of Breath Variability too. Which is what you’ve just described. Finally, god, posture…. I had a back op in 2006 to sort a L5/S1 lumbar problem and it’s only the past couple of years that overcompensation’s have given me psoas/hip problems. And in turn, tight quads, calves and even Achilles problems! I had to give up Kick Boxing and indoor soccer because my body was saying no. I was fit, but the movements involved were maladaptive so not functional. Sometimes at age 51 you’ve just got to come to terms with certain things…so here, your mental attitude and what you choose to do then becomes adaptive and therefore functional. Again, what is appropriate for your age, flexibility and current posture? Now, I find that a mixture of cardio and strength training is age and posture appropriate and I incorporate breath work into this regime. As a result, I’m more flexible, adaptive. Less pot bellied!! I used to be a pot bellied Kick Boxer 😂😂. This was all down to the hips, psoas and anterior tilt. Ok, I admit it, beer 🍺 too 🤔😅. Doing the right exercise and appropriating my breathing has really trimmed me down tho. Anyway, sorry for the essay. Always a pleasure 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🙏🙏 13:09

@fitzplastik You get it completely. Breath Variability is definitely the right term!🙌 The comparison to HRV is absolutely the right one to be making. And perhaps easier for people to get their heads around. Your clients are very lucky to have you. You seem to have it all figured out!😉Sorry to hear about the L5/S1 woes. Quite common. But I am happy to hear you've dropped the pot belly. Amazing job! Keep being adaptive. Talk soon.💖

I am really struggling with breath holds and slow low breathes. No matter what I do I get terrible air hunger. I can get to 15/20 seconds bolt score if I nod my head (the nod in the nose in blocking exercise). If I don’t it’s around 10. However i I focus on my breathing and do low and slow my I feel like I can’t breathe for days. My oxygen is normal between 95 and 99 but I can get an air hunger that is tolerable. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. My breathing isn’t fast anymore. I prob have about 10 to 12 breathes a min if I time. However I really struggle with my out breath being too short. I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I have/ had longer (2 years) although believe it’s mainly anxiety. I am seeing a counsellor for health anxiety. Finally if I do anything that spreads up my breathing even slightly I get air hunger when I return to rest. For example gentle ball kick about with my son. I’ve not done any exercise other than walking since I had covid 2 years ago. Can you help? I wish I could afford to pay for your services as I really need a coach. It’s so terrifying feeling like you are suffocating 😢 but doctors say you are fine and the pulse oximeter says too ! So you are stuck alone and frightened!! Thanks for your videos ❤

I also talk very fast without proper breaths so that messes up my oxygen carbon dioxide balance too so when I go back to rest it feels uncomfortable. I have ADHD so brain is fast 😅

@sherylmarshall1444 I feel for you, my dear. I'm so sorry to hear you are still struggling with Long Covid. I have had several clients in your position and it did take a couple YEARS for them to finally feel anything even close to baseline. It does sound like you are able to make your breath functional at rest - which is terrific! - you're just still not able to bring that functionality into movement and daily activities. I obviously cannot give you any personalized advice in the RU-vid comments without evaluating you/working with you, so I can't get very specific here. It does sound like something is still going on with the chemoreceptors in your brain - that they might still be overly sensitive. But I'm glad you are working with a mental health counselor, because the psychological anxiety can definitely keep you in an everlasting loop of air hunger. I mean, they are showing that Long Covid can really be partially explained by damage to the mitochondria. Are you familiar with the "cell danger response"? So while you're breathing exercises are very important, I think it is going to take more than that to really heal your body and your nervous system. I wish I could be more helpful. The best I can offer you is my free Long Covid video training that I created a few years back. The exercises may be too simple and obvious for you at this point, but the training does include progressions as well. It could be a good starting point. Here's the link, in case you are interested: www.belighttt.com/covid Thank you so much for stopping by the channel, Sheryl. Please don't give up. It just might take more than "one thing" to get you back on your feet. But every little step you take toward healing your body will be of benefit. Please keep going!🙌Have a great day, love.

This makes a lot of sense Tara! Thanks for the information, ✨🙏I'm going to apply it. And thanks for sharing your story how about your posture. No wonder you went through so much!,, I can relate in some ways, growing up ,participating in sports and music,, there's so much perfectionism in sports and music. Thinking back,, I'm really grateful for the teachers that were graceful and encouraging,,,🎶 and didn't your feet get cold? 😮😁🐦

@BELightTT 6 месяцев назад
@jayheinz4624 For sure, I totally agree with you. There is so much perfectionism in sports and performing arts in general. And there is a high correlation between perfectionism and dysfunctional breathing and anxiety. Makes sense, no? I think a lot of us have experienced that in our lives. Thanks so much for watching, Jay. It's nice to hear from you. I hope you're doing well.

@@jayheinz4624100%! It should be fun! I also feel like I need a few lessons again, just to get back on track. It's shocking to me that before the pandemic I did a mini classical guitar recital for a group of about 30 people....and now, I would be hell bent to recall how I played a single one of those songs! 🤪Easy come, easy go. I hope to get a good chunk of time to start relearning guitar. And yes, well, I was born in 1980, so my teen years were filled with 90s greats! I was just talking to some people about how it's easy to know the music that came before you (e.g. from your parents' and grandparents' eras) but it's like you never learn any new music after the age of about 20! LOL😂90s music is so engrained in my mind and my heart. I still feel like 1996 was yesterday! LOL. So yea, the 90s stuff is just fun and nostalgic for me. We created a ton of new and interesting genres during that decade. And no, I have not seen Elton's new video release! I will have to check it out. Thanks for the tip. Oh, as a side note, have you been watching some of Rick Beato's interviews?! He's been having mega stars come on, and one interview is more touching than the next. I cry during every single one! LOL. The Michael McDonald one was really good. His voice still sounds incredible! But they're all great. Talk soon, Jay.

I am new to the channel would it be a good idea to add box breathing to an exercise such as push-ups, like you would decline and inhale as you decline for a count of 4, then hold for a count of four, the pushup and exhale for a count of four, then of course hold for a count of four, then rinse and repeat? Guess I am wondering if there would be possible benefits?
@BELightTT
@BELightTT 8 месяцев назад
@dazed3453 Thank you so much for supporting the channel! I appreciate that so much. So listen, I'm not asking this to be a jerk, but what exactly is your goal with this exercise? I mean, it sounds cool and kinda fancy, but what's the purpose you have in mind? When I work with my students and clients, I really try to get them to understand the WHY behind everything they are doing - which includes when selecting an exercise - otherwise, what is the point really? Give me a little more information about your goals, and I'll try to give you a better answer. Also, please realize, there's a lot of "fancy" ideas out there in the health and fitness industry, but "fancy" doesn't always mean better or even effective! LOL 😂Have a great day! I look forward to hearing back from you.

Honestly the question is to quell my ignorance I even asked my cardiologist but he couldn't give me an answer I was trying to see if box breathing and exercises with the box breathing but in the way I explained above, if it is beneficial then cool if not it also cool, I want to work out a little to maintain, but if box breathing along with is not really going to change anything then I can do with out and just do regular box breathing exercises and work my breathing like that, I actually have done it like I explained it's pretty it helps with form and concentration but can't anything past that because I don't know enough I assuming

@BELightTT
@BELightTT 8 месяцев назад
@@dazed3453 So, when I work with my clients and I want to challenge their breathing during exercise, there are sort of 3 main tools that I use: 1. breath holds during bodyweight movements (e.g. breath-hold squats, breath-hold push-ups) 2. use a SportsMask to further increase CO2 and improve CO2 tolerance as well as enhance oxygen distribution 3. block one nostril (difficult during push-ups😉). Box breathing, I normally reserve for use either on its own or during walks. I've never tried it during push-ups. It's not that I think there's any harm in it...I just don't know how much benefit you're getting. I'm still not fully clear on your primary goal. I do think it's challenging. I do think it requires mind, body and breath control. So in that way, yes, it's a good exercise! If your goal is focus and concentration, it's perfect. Do I think it enhances the properties of box breathing? Probably not by much. The push-ups are slow and controlled; you're not moving enough to really build-up a lot of extra CO2; I just don't know that it's the best bang for your buck. There's probably better methods for your desired outcome. But please do not base your decision fully on my one solo opinion. Please feel free to ask around. Thank you so much for the interesting question. I appreciate you!

I am so glad you expanded (and clarified) on the conventional description of Oxygen Advantage for functional breathing - LSD: Low, Slow, and Deep (I admit I had a constant confusion about the difference between Low and Deep). This releases us from the narrow - or fixed - definition of functional breathing and gives us "permission" to contextualize our breathing. This recognition of nuances and subtleties of breathing is what sets you far apart from the rest!!! Thank You.

@kantipurohit5437 Long time, no see, my friend! How are you? Thank you so much for stopping by the channel again and for leaving such a thoughtful comment. I really appreciate you so much. And to clarify further, LOW and DEEP mean exactly the same thing in Oxygen Advantage. LSD is defined as Light, Slow & Deep. "Light" refers more to the volume of air being moved. Remember, in OA, we like to breathe LESS. But yes, to your point, there are many nuances, especially depending on the activity and the particular population you are working with. I'm so glad you got some insights and clarity from this video. Thank you again for watching. Have a great day!
