This was a very useful video for a few reasons. Firstly, I had never heard of Rosalba Courtney, so it was good to check her website out. Myself being a Craniosacral therapist who is also a breathwork geek, she is doing professionally what I dream of doing in the future: integrating functional breathing approach into bodywork therapy to deepen results. One day….. Secondly, I love the simplicity of the single nostril breath technique. Less pranayama gymnastics than I’ve seen before. I wonder if you might go deeper into why alternating nostrils and for example why starting with the less blocked nostril is important chemically. One thing i noticed is that after the exercise BOTH my nostrils felt less blocked. And also my sympathetic/parasympathetic systems felt more tuned or balanced….. I assume due to the nostril alternating? Anyway Tara, stay excellent, lucky to have your teachings 🙏 0:06

@fitzplastik Hello, friend! Yes, Rosalba is wonderful. I really appreciate her work, her research and her insights. She's also a lovely person. And I'm with you, incorporating breathwork and bodywork is quite a powerful approach, for sure. You're already living that dream!😉 "Pranayama gymnastics"! LOL😂I always start by blocking the more blocked nostril, because 1. if you try to breathe through the more congested side first, it can become quite stressful, quite quickly, and really defeat the purpose of the exercise. The CO2 build-up can get pretty intense, pretty quickly, when trying to breathe through congestion (of course, this depends on the level of congestion, but you get it). 2. I know for a fact that whenever we block the nostrils (whether one or both), there is always a build-up of nitric oxide, which always works to dilate the blood vessels and airways. I have never had an experience where blocking one or both nostrils didn't create better airflow and breathing. You can almost think of the single-nostril breathing as a "single-nostril breath hold". Then, when you release the side that was originally more blocked, you should have improved airflow on that side. Now, when you go to block the other side, it should be easy to manage your breathing through the original blocked side, without creating extra stress. Does this make sense? It's a lot of words to explain something very simple!😂And yes, I think it's quite natural to feel more balanced after this exercise. The original alternate-nostril breathing pranayama (nadi shodhana) was designed to "balance the hemispheres of the brain". And the current science tells us that there is something to that, in terms of the nervous system. The left nostril is supposed to be more associated with a parasympathetic response, and the right nostril with a sympathetic response. So "balance" is a natural consequence. I love the original nadi shodhana, but when we are talking about reducing airflow and working on CO2 tolerance, I feel it moves a bit too quickly. With my students, sometimes I like to focus on one nostril at a time, so that they can really sink into the exercise, focus on slowing down the rate and volume of their breath, without worrying about the "gymnastics", as you so aptly put it! 😂 I hope this response helps to clarify a bit, Steven. Thanks, as always, for supporting my work and the channel. I really appreciate you. Have a great day!

Cool a new vid! Happy New Year Tara. You're so right when you say people don't think about their breatheing. Someone I know has shallowing breathing and I can always hear his short breaths. It makes me feel like saying something to him. But people dont like to think about their breathing. It like makes them more neurotic. People want to be removed from their consciousness. Which is sad. I feel it is what people really need! I will do this new session this evening after after work. Welcome back!

@BenMJay Hello, my friend! Happy New Year! I'm so happy to see you here in the comments.😊 It's so true what you're saying. It's almost like if you're not ready to dive deeply into the topic and really understand it, just knowing a few details can lead to some neuroticism. Paying attention to your breath can be a trippy experience for sure. Yea, so this session is super simple; super basic. We're just practicing reducing the airflow and limiting the removal of CO2 from the body. If you try it out, let me know how it goes. Thanks so much for watching! Talk more soon.💖

Shortly after waking up ,I turned on RU-vid and came across your video Tara. I decided to do the breathing exercises as I was waking up,,, I must admit I did them laying down though. As I was doing them I started feeling slight chills in my back and my mind was drifting and remembering some places I had walked recently, on my exercise walks. Afterwards I felt more relaxed and somewhat invigorated even before my first cup of coffee !hahaha and that was interesting information about PH and alkaline. 👍 I have tended to be more acidic over the years so I have tried to eat things that are more alkaline based and put stevia in my coffee and it seems to make me feel better with less acid reflux. This looks like a really good, interesting New Year's series start! Thanks for the info! ✨ Happy New Year Tara! ✨🐦

Next one will release next Wednesday, where I am going to speak a bit about biomechanics. I saw your message on IG. I will respond later today. Have a great day, Jay!
