If you can’t get a gfci outlet behind your tank you can always put a gfci breaker in

Had this exact thing happen to me a few weeks ago. Had water flow down the wire from the pump into the extension plug. Now I use a towel in the hand holding the pump cord.

Id like to know about the idea behind the surge protector preventing gfci trips, might be interested in doing that with our panel.

GFCI or not, I would advise using a low voltage pump to blast the rocks from now on.

Even if a low voltage pump is used that pump has a step down transformer with 120v ac and after working with the tank and if the person is in a hurry when disconnecting it with wet hands that is where the shock comes and the gfci will sace your life i always recommend using them and i install them in peoples tanks and mine i am a licensed electrician and by code they are required better safe than sorry, also if gfci outlets are not used there are gfci breakers protecting the entire circuit.

It is secured by a chain attached to the ceiling so it can't fall into the tank.

Ive got a tank with a few pieces of equipment that leak stray electricity and i could feel it a tad if i was barefoot next to tank with hand inside...so I added a grounding probe with excellent results so I added them to several other tanks...they were like 2 for 30 on amazon ....think its worth it bc ya never know when something is gonna shyt the bed

I'd actually suspect something on that system that stays running is the culprit and when you added that pump the current traveled via pump into that wall that tripped the circuit....I have several of those pump and even brand new have some stray electricity issues...it's minor but enough to bridge a current from a more problematic device that's running full time in the backround ....

@@Sammy31DeeI haven’t done this myself but heard you can use a voltmeter to check your water for stray current from equipment. If you discover there is current, it’s just a matter of testing the water with one device at a time plugged in until you find the culprit.

Sounds like you were also barefoot? As a rule- I never put my hands in the tank without at least wearing flip flops. MJ’s are also notorious for rusting and expanding over time. I first noticed this after feeling stray voltage zap on a small cut on finger when placed into tank.

No, I never go barefoot when tending to my tanks. I was wearing flip flops at the time.

Flip flops wont save you from shock or worse electrocution gfci outlet or breaker will save your life also a titanium probe in the tank will save you.
