It was an expression of concern about Paul bc Alec wanted to kill him with a single shotgun blast through the chest, instant death. But Paul didn’t die. Alec had to shoot him through the head. That’s why I think he lamented that “I/they did him so bad.” He had taken two guns - bc Maggie, who would be running, required automatic shot and Alec cared less. Her death would be more painful, more brutal. Personally, I think there was a little revenge in it. He didn’t say “I/they did her so bad.” In fact, in court, he tried to cry every time Paul’s name was mentioned but not Maggie’s.
