Hey Jon, thanks for the review! One thing to note: our formula for the Washes has actually not changed. We just added more colours. We agree, the Speedpaint Metallics are amazing - however - they are not ideal for dry brushing or other metallic techniques. The Fanatic Metallics borrow some of the tech from their Speedpaint cousins, but have more body for more flexibility and usability for different paint styles and techniques.
@@Pharune616you can go watch the videos from the development but in short, we listened to feedback from the community who wanted Speedpaint to be more than just a one coat painting solution. The changes we made to 2.0 made it more versatile and stable so it can be used better for glazing, basecoating, and other techniques while still being consistent in behavior as a one coat solution for those who use it that way.
I have to respect Army Painter for listening to feedback and actually making changes. I can't think of many other companies that do that, let alone paint companies.
Yup. I gotta say, it makes me want to buy a box just because I think they seem like pretty great guys and I want to support this sort of thing. I really don't *need* more paints (I'm very happy with ProAcryl and the new Vallejo range), but still. They've been the underdog of the miniature paints industry for years now and they're working hard to better their products, listen to feedback and implement it. And I love that.
I don't really need any paints at the moment, or at least I think I don't, but the simple fact that a company listened to their customers and acted on it, when some others don't feel like they do, makes picking some of these up really tempting.
I find it funny that the best thing about this range refresh to me are the additions of the "standard color name" and the "triad designators" on the labels, hoping more paint ranges take notice and add those themselves.
My brother got me the 50 war paint set from Army Painter for Christmas of 2018 to help cope with my grandfather’s death… I still have most of them though I don’t use them as much (Uniform Gray is a great drybrush for rocky bases), but I sort’ve outgrew them. They helped me with my depression and made me get into this hobby so I’ll never say a negative word about old army painter( even if I compare them unfavorably to better lines). Hearing they’ve really upped their game is great. Good on you, Army Painter.
As someone who is brand new to the hobby. I’ve only been buying citadel paints just cause it’s practical. They sell them in the shop after all. But hands down the most frustrating thing is the bottle design. Getting the damn paint out of the bottle and onto a pallet is a legitimate chore. So any bottle that has a top where you can just drip the paint out is a massive improvement in my mind.
order a pack of dropper bottles and some flow aid and then decant all of your citadel paints into droppers. Thats what I did just because it helps the shelf life of the paint, the citadel paint pots are a terrible design.
the original poster said it was too much of a chore dropping paint out. I think decanting all of the pots seems like a horrible chore too. but if you got the paints, you may as well make them easy to use.

Honestly pretty glad that this paint range has come out as good as people say it has. Was great seeing the progress from Army Painter along with their honesty and openness of their failings in the past. I don't really need the paints but it's hard for me not to want both this set and the spped paints 2.0. They truly are a completely new company product wise since the speed paint range and it's really good to see. Plus ontop of all the effort they have put in the paint range hasn't exploded in price and is still one of the more affordable hobby paints in the industry. Just great work Army Painter.
While I have never painted a gaming miniature, I do build scale models and have learned so much from you that I never would have learned in the scale model world. ... just wanted to say Thanks.
If I hadn't spent a ton on Pro Acryl, Vallejo, and Citadel then I would have probably bought these. I started on Army Painter and they used to be horrible so I'm glad to see them step up to the plate finally. Their speed paints are great for sure.
I got to try the new Fanatic range at LVO and I absolutely loved it. Whenever I am testing paints I usually just paint a leg or something to get a feel. I ended up sitting down and painting the entire space marine, highlighting the panels, edge highlighting, everything! Can't wait to pick some up! Just gotta save for the complete range 🤘
Hi, it's me. You did it, you finally convinced me to buy some AP paints. To you Army Painter folks...congratulations, this will be your most successful period yet. Jon, you're describing Monument's Transparent White when you ask for pure white glaze. Just saying.
"Transparent White" is basically a standard pigment known as Zinc White (or as Schmincke calls it, "Mixing White"), so I'm a bit surprised Jon mentioned something like that as if it's fairytales (: hopefully he'll find out soon, he's in for a fun surprise
Paint chemistry has hit a point where everyone makes a fantastic, serviceable paint and you're splitting hairs to choose one over the other. Where this set shines over everyone else is accessibility. Whether it's how available it is for most hobbyists, or the amazing labels with the double triads and the standardized color naming, army painter has done a great job in providing a service for painters in addition to a comparable line of paint. Kudos to them for paying attention to that other aspect, I hope this line kills in sales for them to reinforce their marketing.
After a not so great day, I honestly laughed my arse off at the first 20 seconds of this video - cheers for brightening my mood. Very much appreciated. Rest of the video is good as well.
My favourite miniature painter reviewing the paints I've been waiting for?! YES PLEASE! You nailed this video! The intro was hilarious, the info was great, and the painting was amazing as always. I preordered the medium sized set right on the first day and am so excited for them. I look forward to your videos every week. You're my favourite channel and I want to say thank you for how great your content is. ❤️
Hi all, I’ve got GW, Vallejo, and army painter sets. Been doing miniatures for some 20 years now, and I most say that each company has its strengths, but lately in all honesty AP is my go to 😊. Thanks Jon for the detailed description and practical applications!!!
I recently thought about getting back into the hobby and start painting again. Stumbled across this video and the huge color variety. Saw the price and wiped the idea of getting back into the hobby immediately. 😀
I'm not gonna lie.. The Fanatic colors seem to be truly very good. The worst reaction to them I've seen here on RU-vid seems to conclude that they are _not_ the best, but almost. That's more than I can say for any other line of paint range where the disagreement varies more. But people have had more time to evaluate and find the flaws and strengths in the paints from the likes of Citadel, AK, Pro Acryl and Vallejo, so the long time flaws and strengths in the Fanatics will probably come.. but for now, I can't hardly wait.
> The worst reaction to them I've seen here on RU-vid seems to conclude that they are not the best, but almost. Sponsored "reviews". That's all those are.
As a newer miniature painter, my jaw dropped when I saw the price was $760. After doing the math it comes to about $3.50 for each paint, which is pretty reasonable, but still. It seems like every aspect of this hobby is crazy expensive.
Super happy with the speed paint 2.0's caused me to buy this set. Now I just gotta wait till march for mine. Tubrodork is relaunching their new formula with new bottles too on the 14th. So many new paints to buy!
Every single one of the turbo dork paints are the worst paints ever created. Sure, they can look cool. But all 30+ bottles of my Turbo Dork paint are solid clumps beneath white goop. They are all unusable. Meanwhile, Vallejo paints from years earlier are still perfect. Not to mention how many of the Turbo Dork bottles fail dumping paint all over everything. Turbo Dork really sucks. Not worth the cost for their paints, use different chromatic blend companies, I think Tamiya makes some.
@@FercPolo It's a known that their first wave a paints had a issue with their formula when it was exposed to near freezing tempatures. They customer service replaced all my bottles that had the issue you described with zero issues or cost to me. I hope their new formula has removed this problem like they said.
I know original AP wasn't good, but frankly, I found it was quite fine for the price it was, and frankly availability. You can go on and on about AK, or Vallejo Ice Yellow, and you know what? If you can't find it at an LGS within 2 hours...the point being, yeah, to buy things where you play, then...sorry, that equals none paint. If you've painted long enough, you know it isn't the paint that makes the model good. Ok, so maybe don't use craft store paints. But otherwise, Army Painter was priced right, properly available and not absent because every influencer under the sun said, "I like this paint!" (No offense, Ninjon, but ya'all know it to be true :D )
Honestly Iv been slowly leaning toward army painter, I got there speed paint 2.0 and Iv enjoyed using it on certain pieces. So I’m definitely going to save up for this box, looking forward to getting this eventually!
That's a very helpful review with a lot of information and insight! I hope TAP can deliver constant quality with this paints. When I tried their old color line, every fourth or fifth color was completely unusable.
I didn't think they changed the washes. You are the first one I've heard say it's different. I think the part I do like the most is the advanced triad system, it just allows you to easily find your shadows and highlights. Their effect paints also really interest me.
Great points on the labels, I really like what they did there. I also find most brands have an overly large label, it would help a lot if more of the actual color was showing through. Also, I wonder how you compare them to other brands.
Have you done a video about either how to build, or where to buy some nice paint storage solutions. I have both of the giant army painter kits, but would love a nice method to see them all and allow for more use of color pairs, and tones. Thanks, and gratz on the GD! Just looking at getting back into slaying some gray!
Thank you so much for this review. After a couple of decades of painting, I would up favoring Vallejo above the other ranges, but this makes me really want to try out some of this new Armypainter range. Any product that can keep me away from GW's range is a good thing in my books.
After trying a few colors, im mostly impressed. I think the skin tones are stellar, and take the guesswork out when doing shadow and highlights. However the Warm Reds are not red. The darkest red, which is "resplendent red" literally says its Dark Red on the side, is more orange than anything. The label shows red but the color inside is orange and it dries orange. I will stick with Pro Acryl for red, and try Vallejo updated model and game color lines before delving more into Fanatics. Solid, but not winning me over like I thought it would
This was the review I was waiting for! Granted I pre-ordered the complete set right away on January 15th, I have still been eagerly watching videos of other painters to see what they have been able to accomplish.
Gotta say, all that bottle labling is amazing. And I'm stunned it wasn't already a thing for all manufacturers. Can't believe I just bought a large number of paints! And most are Citadel...
hey John a little trick for thinning metallics use a rapid thinner they will dry faster not allowing the metallic flakes to sink and disperse unevenly 😊
The Army Painter is like the Detroit Lions this year. A troubled past, a resurgence, and, while they're not perfect and they didn't make it all the way, they've become America's team and we love them
I have been using Army Painter paints steady since 2020; bought the Mega Set in 2015 when I was dabbling with mini painting a bit for a couple months, then set them aside for a handful of years. They definitely weren't in great condition when I went to start using them again, but some glass agitators, a few drops of water into the bottles, and a healthy shake - they were all useable. When I started getting my first replacement bottles in 2021 and 2022 I had noticed a big difference in the quality of the replacements. The paint was much smoother out of the bottle, and the coverage was better. Their Matte White and Matte Black are still some of the smoothest I have used, and I have Vallejo, Citadel, and Formula P3 to compare. ProAcryl will still take the cake compared to most brands, but for the price point one of these large Army Painter sets will have you covered for most things, and then some.
Interesting to see that AP has improved the quality of their pigment. I can't see myself dropping several hundred on a box though, when my paint shelf is already over-full. I might get a few of these here and there to fill a few gaps.
Thanks for the review Jon! I was already in when Vincy V did a rather positive review, but your opinion does hold high value as well, so I appreciate another thought of confidence in my buying of the full set as my hobby groups new big paint set. Glad I still have Pro A for my own browns to mix in lol
As a fairly new painter like a month into it. I wish I found you sooner. I’m considering this set as well but that price tag hurts 😂. Thank you for the information
12:20 Have you tried the Vallejo Metallics Air line? I'd assume they're closer to the Speedpainter line, but I find they're a fantastic consistency, color, and coverage. Also they make a metallic black that's hard to beat!
A great overview and review of these paints. I am definitely looking forward to testing one of the smaller sets when they become available later this year. I also noticed that you were using the Tamiya thinner for the airbrush. That immediately caught my attention, as I hadn't considered it as a basic thinner for the airbrush outside of when I have sprayed specific Tamiya paints. Now I am wondering whether it might play well with Stynlyrez Primer!
When I started I didn’t know anything and just picked Army Painter War paints. I haven’t tried any other lines, as part of these reviews I kept hearing how difficult the original paints are to work with compared to other lines. Ended up preordering this complete set. I wonder how eye opening they will be when I get to try them!
That is a humble squid but you're painting abilities have grown over the years so well that it makes it look super professional and amazing looking. Rock on, Jon.
I've shat on AP publicly for years, rightfully so, but if jon says they are a lot better then it seems they learnt and listened. There was no need for the old AP outside taking money from new painters who knew no better, this new AP seems a lot more exciting. Hope they keep at it.
They do seem to have a seriously good thing here regarding bottles/labels/sensible-names/triads/minimizing-mixing/availability. Most other brands require a good amount of effort to understand what paints even exist, to the point where I often can't be bothered.
I use Apple Barrel paint. You can thin them with water, and they are dirt cheap. The only big downside is it gets that song stuck in my head. You know the one.
I typically don't buy full paint sets (I don't have a need for 300 paints, My miniatures usually consist of between 8-20 paints at most), but the fact that they're already orginized, have brighter and darker tones for each, have technical, tones, metallics, and so on.. I feel like this would be worth clearing off a shelf for.
I'm only one year into painting... I have tried all the major brands. I really like army painter airbrush paints. Even for brushing. Haven't tried these though.
I'm color blind and just took up painting minis. Trying to color match is pretty difficult. A set like that with the labels would be awesome but I don't think I can bring myself to aquire that much paint as a new Painter with only a few models.
Great review. I've watch a lot of review videos for this new paint range and yours was excellent. I'm very excited about the new paints and am switching from GW paints to the new army painter paints next month when their released.
Gotta say, I started back with these and thought they worked well. Not the same as my new proacryl, but consistently better than citadel. Also, dropped bottles from the go
I have been trying to get my hands on this set for a while. I have their older set and love the speedpaint set. Hopefully I can grab a set at Adepticon this year.
Love the real names of the colours rather than only fantasy names! One can only dream one day they will list the percentages of the original pigments but eh, that's probably their trade secrets. Or perhaps they could provide a hexcode?
I use Army painters almost exclusively, i got the original war paints set and still love it if im being honest, i feel like its still really good compared to their modern paints
Glad to hear someone acknowledge how bad the earlier AP paints were. All the videos I saw were people sponsored by them talking about how good they were, then when they had to fix their Speedpaints and now this range, trying to hype _them_ up & gloss over the problems the previous ranges had!
Hoping the full release includes sets of triads so I can just get the stuff I need, but seriously considering these paints. Just getting back into the hobby after years away so I've got a clean slate, and the common names and triad system is absolutely ideal for those of us who are colourblind.
