Did Aventon Secretly Unlock Your Bikes Speed? 

This may be my issue. I'll try a ride here in a bit.

Just for clarity, for the Aventure 2 the app says 28 but power is provided up to 32?

@@scotthardesty I just hopped on my Aventure 1 and chose update firmware and it was most recent and its still 28 max. What firmware number were you using?

@@timthrash2145 Seems like the Aventure 1's are stuck at 28mph (just like Mike Rochester showed us). but I was able to get to to 32mph on my A2. Firmware Version 1.7.1

I don't think ebike reviewers do it enough... if at all. He's a good guy. Known him for about a year.

I believe it is because the sinch has a 500w hub motor instead of the 750w. As you saw, I also have sinch 2 but have no idea on what software version it has. I would ask that local bike shop can flash them for you to be sure (or at least find out if they have already done it). Thanks for subscribing!

I would definitely keep the older display at this point if I was you. I can agree that I am able to see the black and white displays better in the sun than the color displays for sure.

@@scotthardesty If you pair your Aventure to the app, it will automatically downgrade your op speed to 28 mph, now. Aventon irritatingly flashes your controller now to reduce the top speed to 28. Who owns the bike anyway? You or them?

Well, you saw it was on 32 on his app. Bad part was, I screwed him by asking him to check the speed. So now he is throttled back to 28mph.

It obviously was 32mph since we had proof, but you know they have to legally cover their hide. We definitely do NOT want them suffering or going out of business due to state law legal requirements!

My LEVEL.2 allowed me to go 32 MPH when I first got it. It said 32 MPH when maxing out its speed in the app and during a ride, it did in fact hit around 31-32 MPH before the motor started reducing power and finally cutting out. At some point over the next few months, the app's maximum speed seemed to have changed to 28 MPH without the ability to go any higher. Unfortunately, from that point on the bike's motor has in fact been cutting out at around 28 MPH.

I have it in an email that officially says they did it after experiencing this issue also. I've restored my Aventure 1 back to original settings. Set @ 51kmph...…..Hit 54kmph!

​@@darith27it was 32 mph its not the state requirement it's just that at 32 mph it was draining your battery way too fast that's why aventon had to fine tune it back to 28mph I still don't know how this guy is still able to hit 32 mph could it be that he's in Illinois & I'm in canada, different region different requirements I'm not sure but I heard the aventure 1 is still hitting 32 mph

Have you paired your bike recently? Are you still able to reach 25mph? I am scared to connect my sinch 2 to the app!

I got a report that the original Soltera now does 25mph no problem. I am hoping they get the Soltera.2 figured out soon.

Congrats on your Level 2! I love its weight and found a local bike shop who would service it if i got it through him. I know the Wired Freedom is touted a lot on the internet but its weight and tire size makes it seem like a pain to Load/unload. I fly drones so I wanna get even further sites to launch from thats away from my car. the higher the speed above 25 mph the happier I'll be but 35mph plus is kinda overkill, but fun (still over kill) since its not safe on pedestrian paths, but great for bike lanes on the road.

I ride bikes 95% of time and I can tell you that I only crank these bikes up to these speeds when I am testing them out. I go pretty slow around people on these paths when not testing speeds.

I use Strava to record my rides and it hasn’t failed me yet. Now, for your Sinch.2’s. I doubt the bike shop will adjust the speed since the bike needs to be connected to the app on your phone. With that said. They may already be programmed to go 25mph, if not, just connect them to your phone and you can make the adjustments just like you did with your Aventure.

Just the phone app. When it connects to your bike, it delivers the firmware.

Yup. My suggestion is. If you have the Aventure 1 and it's unlocked at 32mph... DO NOT connect to the app.

Mine does not. If it did, I would have the rear brake rotor checked to see if it is straight or not.

It's very common among all Aventure 2's. It seems to be a resonance issue with the discs at a certain speed, and mine does it bad. You can find a lot of complaints by googling "resonance aventon 2 noise". I plan to change my discs out.

Yes, what the hell is that? I thought it was like a fender strut buzzing but everything is tight. As you said, doesn't hurt anything but still kind of annoying.

That's what they did with the Aventure 1. As you saw, when Mike logged into his Aventure one it was at 32mph. Then it jumped to 28mph. I can tell you this. I will not be connecting my A2 to the app anymore as I don't want it dropping down in speed. If somone has the A1 and it does 32mph, DO NOT connect to the app.

@@scotthardesty this is great advice! And it won’t stop them from lowering it from 28 either. My friend just bought the A2 and now that he bumped it up to 28, I’ll advise him to disconnect from the app. Unfortunately for me, I was misinformed about the abound (that’s what I bought) and was told by the seller I can unlock it. Tried today and I can’t go any higher than 20! So this model won’t work to raise it.

It makes perfect sense and I agree that this is why they did dropped it back down to 28mph.

The reason the Sinch.2 now goes to 25mph, it is due to an upgrade in the firmware from Aventon. My Sinch.2 originally only went 20mph when purchased. I hope this helps.

Throttle will only take you to 20mph. To go faster, you need to pedal. Make sure you take your hand off the throttle when wanting to go faster.

That's what I was saying. Anything above 20 is 100% unassisted. So my confusion is when people imply the bike will assist peddling tell it hits 28. Mine is set to 28 and it does nothing above 20mph.

Electronic parts fail, I have had to replace many a controller. I wouldn't be worried about riding your bike. Bummer about the speed loss (we have all felt that) but at least you will be able to trust your bike again.

@@scotthardesty I get that, but this failure mode is going to hurt people. Had I parked my bike 90 degrees to the left the bike would have launched into a busy street . Grabbing brake didn’t kill power to the motor. I’ve loved the bike Because after bad accident I never thought I would be able to ride again. Step though and electric made it possible. Keep up the great videos!

Now the Sinch does 25 which also made me happy.

yeah but not everyone carries kids on it. there's other reasons to have a cargo bike.

I have the 2021 Sinch and just upgraded to the BC280 display. I was able to increase the max speed to 25mph and already have pushed the e-bike to a max speed of 26.2mph.

I wasn't able to test the OG Sinch. I know the display is diffrent than the color displays now used. Maybe someone will see your comment and be able to give you that answer. With that being said, I would NOT connect to the app if you bike already goes past 20mph.

Hmmmmm... well I guess I got lucky. I haven't connected the Sinch to the app since this video so it will stay at the 25mph speeds.

I believe they regulated the bikes back down to 28mph to stay compliant with laws when it comes to Class 3 ebikes. They are only suppose to go 28mph max. I understand why they did it, I also understand why people who are used to the higher 30-32 mph speed are upset.

I hate how they did that. The only time I opened the app I read about them sneaking in to make speed limitations

Simple, hold down the bottom (-) button for 3-4 seconds. It will take off.

This is one reason why I prefer the cadence sensor. On PAS 5 it's breeze to get to max speeds!

Because only Class 1 bikes are allowed on mtb trails. So they have it locked at 20mph.

Don't worry about that. They cannot connect your bike to the App, only you can.

Thanks for sharing. That is sad that you avoid Aventon as I feel they have some of the best bikes (under 2k) on the market.

@@scotthardesty I think they represent an incredible value, but one of the most important aspects of e-biking for me has been taking part in the community. But when the community is filled with venom it's hard to love it.

That's the great thing about social media...we have the power to BLOCK those whiners and complainers. There's still plenty of speed available, and I still love all my Aventon bikes. You will be missing out since there's no longer any issues with the speed caps. You can even hit 22mph if you keep pressing throttle repeatedly on certain models. They have THE BEST customer service period and I can attest to that!

Will be selling mine when I can get the bike I was considering before I 'settled' for an aa1. Now I realize why they are so cheap.

I also believe the Nomad is limited to 20mph on throttle only as well. It's been a minute since I have compared the two in a video.

It still shows 28mph on my app as well. I am just showing that before, it was hard to get it up to 28mph, but now, I can go up to 32mph.

You can use the throttle to maintain a speed of 20mph. Anything faster than that and you will need to pedal it.

Just got back from ride with a new replacement bike - Sinch .2. Supposedly Aventon tested the bike before shipping to the dealer. The ride had 100% battery, PAS Eco, Max speed limit set at 25. Motor ran away when approaching 21 mph, speeding up on its own towards 24 mph. Hard braking to slow down to 18 mph and then motor kicked off. So, 3 bikes in local area have defect. I am glad I bought through a dealer who is extremely sympathetic and helpful though this whole ordeal. I will return to the bike shop when they receive the re-flash tool from Aventon. Overall, I am happy with Sinch .2 One display design issue that I am surprised people don't complain about is the main screen does not show trip data. You have to come to a complete stop to get to a different display page for trip data. While riding, the battery level and speed are important, but to include total historical time and odometer rather than trip time and trip distance makes no sense.

Defiantly, not meaning it was just 10 bikes, although, when I talked to Aventon they said they had 10 with that issue. I just meant that they seemed to act on quickly once they were able to confirm the issue. I'm glad you got yours sorted out. So far, ours has not done that.

Oh wow, just saw you 2nd comment. Yeah, wait for the flash for sure. I know when I talked about the Aventure 2 I mentioned how I didn't like that you have to dive into the menu to get trip info as well. So I agree with you on that display.

UPDATE. Good news - local dealer did controller re-flash; took less than 1 minute. The speed surge issue is fixed. Still have 25 mph max limit so re-flash did not alter that. Aventon came through with a fix to a potentially serious defect.

I understand the confustion. It shows the highest you unlock it is to 28mph, but as you saw in the video, I got it up to 32mph.

The only thing I can think of would have you replacing the controller, display and throttle. Area 13 bikes has a kit for that.

As far as I know, the aventon bikes I tested only have PAS levels of 5. Changing the PAS levels would not get them a higher rating than the maximum tested... just. more levels of PAS.

Is not Aventon's fault really, don't let anger get the better of you. Their product is the best value on the market, imo. They have likely been contacted by government regulators for being in violation of the Class 3 ebike speed limit of 28 mph. You can switch to another brand now if you wish, but you will run into this again and again as regulators go out doing their thing to bike companies. Just don't connect your bike to any apps, to delay the inevitable.

Sorry to hear this, but I get it. I also understand why Aventon probably had to do it as @rayrusell6258 stats, they probably had to do it to say in compliance with government regulations. But I also understand it on the consumer side as I am a consumer of Aventon products as well. I hope you find something that suits you!

@@HugoTheLigar seat belt use should be optional, too!! Stop your holier than thou personality, it isn't pretty. The effort to get even one or two mph more on a bike after say 15 mph is significant, so yes ebike riders have good reason to notice a 4 mph reduction. You must not ride bikes much. This country needs less regulation, period. However, no one should be blaming Aventon for this. They have to comply, legally.

@@rayrussell6258 It’s not just the fact they snuck in the back door to reprogram it long after it was bought and paid for and well out of the warranty period that has brought me to the decision to dump Aventon. I think the Aventure a very well built bike mechanically. The issues I’ve had with my Aventure have been more with the electrical aspects of the bike. The delay in throttle response is well documented. There’s also a significant delay in the up take in power when using any of the PAS modes. When the power does come on, it feels like it hits all at once. It can be quite unsettling when you’re trying to perform low speed maneuvers and you get a jolt of power. It’s unpredictable enough to never be able to consistently time it to compensate for it. I know Scott’s a good guy who’s honest and truthful in his reviews. I wouldn’t want to put him on the spot and compromise his relationships with Aventon or any other e-bike manufacturer. So I’d suggest you do a search yourself to see if those aren’t common complaints with the Aventure and wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t common complaints with some of the other Aventon e-bikes also. I like to ride at top speed on the roads without a shoulder or bike lanes because it reduces the speed of impact between myself and a vehicle in case of an accident. Now when I get the bike up around 28 mph the motor power will cycle on and off intermittently. That’s not a very comfortable feeling. Another thing that’s unrelated to the top speed is I’m not your typical e-bike rider in that I do a lot of riding with the bike powered on, but don’t use the throttle or PAS modes as much as others rider do. I simply turn up the power level for 0 to the level I want as needed. I have the bike programmed to stay on for 100 minutes in the background program before it turns itself off in the auto-shutdown setting. But it’s not unusual for the power to shut down randomly before the 100 minute limit, even when the bike has been in continuous motion. That’s not good when you need immediate assistance and then surprise the bike turned itself off. Again I know most e-bike riders are continually using assistance and many haven’t had that issue but it shouldn’t happen either way. The programming feels like an afterthought on this bike and it is an E-bike and not just a bicycle after all. Shouldn’t Aventon be addressing the other issues with their e-bikes also? And let’s not forget if you need tech support they don’t have a tech line to contact them by phone, you have to email them. You see there’s more to the story than you think. Or maybe you did know more than you’re letting on? Your comments come across like you have an affiliation to them. I’m just a guy who rides e-bikes for the exercise and the enjoyment they provide. That, and it’ll get me home if any knee problems or what have you, pop up unexpectedly. You say “ Their product is the best value on the market, imo”. Well I expect better from them than that to meet that standard. imo. I have already switched to another brand, thank you. Cheers P.S. I forgot to mention “Pedal Strike”. LOL

I have not heard if they will be bringing the speeds back up. Aventon is trying to stay in compliance with various Class 2-3 requirements.

@@scotthardesty yeah I can tell there not wanting to I’m in California and a bit ago I would go 30-38mph but now I go lower some people know ways to make them even faster then that but it costs around 1200 and I’m not gunna spend that much

Throttle only takes you to 20mph. Pedal assist for higher speeds.

That's the thing. My Aventon showed 28 on the app and I got it faster. Also when Mike did his test on the Level 2 it was up to 29mph.

@@scotthardesty - Gave it a shot this morning and at least on my Level.2 there was no change. It's amazing what even just a 4 mile an hour bump would do.

I had the original aventure as well. I don't remember that being an option that way.

@@ictpilot Agreed. Although, I don't see that happening as regulations state that the throttle can only goto 20mph. Other companies don't seem to follow that rule but Aventon is good about staying within regulations for long term success.

I get it, but I live in the city of Chicago and not a suburb. There are milions of people in this city and there will always be people no matter where I do these tests. I do my best (and have been extremely successful) of mitigating the dangers of others on the path. Since I had the camera focused on the display and not the trail, you cannot see that there are very few people.

Once I unlocked it to 25mph, I have never connected it to app again, just in case they switched it again.
