The non-stop tuning short throw shifter kit has served me well, but it's time for a massive upgrade. This new shifter from WK motorsport is 5 times the price, but is it 5 times better for my NCP91 yaris?

If you haven’t installed them yet, I’d recommend Torque Solutions solid bushings for the shifter cables (inside the engine bay). The solid bushings dramatically increased shifter feel. It’s a really simple install. Also FYI I did have to sand down one bushing to get it to fit. I believe there’s also brass bushings by another company but I couldn’t find them easily.

Retain and refresh the 1NZFE engine instead of swapping a bigger engine. A bigger engine will definitely make the NCP91 front heavy and will affect the overall balance of the car.

Hard to find definite info, but the two options I'm looking at are both the same weight as the 1nzfe. I'll keep it in mind though.

@@RassoolRacing or probably do a 1NZFE-T swap, easy 140whp without adding that much front end weight. There are also Supercharger bolt-ons from Blitz, that'll only take you at around 110-120 tuned on stock engine internals.

Just drop a 2zr in it! It weighs practically the same as a 1nz. You could get wild with it and go Frankenstein motorworks style and throw a 2zrfxe from a prius in it with 2 intake cams and some e85. That was going to be my backup build route if the 2zz didn't pan out... and now neither are going in it lol

@GavQuintos the problem with any boosted 1nz is that the stock internals fail at ~150whp. The rods are so damn skinny. A 2zr makes about 140-150whp stock. Plus adding boost to the 1nz adds weight to the front of the car. My turbo setup using a cast manifold was almost 40lbs just for the hot side, and it's at the top of the engine.. the worst place to add weight.

Bro, thanks for making this channel... I bought a 2008 Yaris S 3 door, and I have built it as a canyon carver / track day fun car... I hope to see you at streets of willow or Buttonwillow this summer! I am so keen to see what motor you swap in.... I was thinking from a celica or Scion TC would be a good fit.... I am currently saving and researching the same idea. My 1.5 has close to 200K and I want more ponies!!!!!

I own the NST short shift kit and I would not recommend it to anyone. Joey even shows it only reduces throw by half an inch! It is also shorter in height, so you'll have to buy a shift knob adapter or tall shift knob if you're going to be using the stock seats. On top of all that, it's not the easiest to install and they do not give you instructions. Sure you get the bushing upgrade but that's not worth $100 + and hassle of install. Save your money and keep it stock or get the WK.

Im in need of a new shifter for my 08 yaris. What are you referring to when you say Frs? Its more what im looking for. WK would be overkill

I think it's funny how opposite your yaris build is to mine. I just cut and welded 20mm on the bottom of my shifter, machined some delrin shift cable and shifter base bushings, and desiged a 3d printable lateral short throw assembly to use the stock shift base. $500 for a shifter is nuts for a $2000 car IMHO lol. But then again I would never put the cash down for a cusco lsd either

Dunno about the Yaris, but every vehicle I've worked on with a plastic, cable driven shifter assembly always had weird flex that was only fixed by going to a proper metal shifter base. A lot of the slop is from both the loose bushings combined with the flexing housing that twists with the body. Going more rigid helps a good bit with having a more reliable shift and minimal binding. Any slop in the system adds up.

Nice! So do the WK shifters work in the NCP13 also? And does the stock centre console fit over top? Also when you mentioned the solid bushings of the NST kit, are these just the bushings attaching the shifter base to the car preventing rocking? I’m really trying to gain insight on how to improve my shifter feel on a FWD car. Thanks!

For the non-stop tuning kit, yes these are solid metal bushings between the plastic shifter frame and the floor of the car. So the throw isn't much different but those bushings also make a difference. The WK Motorsports shifter is a night and day difference though! I've seen it in the NCP 13 sticking out of the center bezel without a shift boot, so I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about trimming the bezel.

That might not be blowby, 4 cylinder engines natrully blow in and out lots of air from the oil fill cap, you can pull the cap for any 4cyl and you will get lots of air from the oil fill cap.

I just installed this same shifter in my Yaris, did you have to adjust yours or mess with it? It just doesn’t seem that great to me, it’s very stiff, like very, and now if I run second gear until about rev limiter and then shift third gear grinds, just hoping to get some info if i can make it better cause as of rn I wouldn’t recommend it to other people, especially at its price point.

Not much adjustment needed on my end, though if 3rd gear is grinding, that shouldn't have anything to do with the shifter. The little strut connector needs to be adjusted to length, but that's the only thing I can think of

@@RassoolRacing did you notice when you removed the stock shifter, the 2 shift cables had adjustable spots or something you had to turn to get them off the stock shifter, I’m wondering if those adjust the cables themselves. I’m messing with it rn trying to get it dialed in. But still getting slight grind from second to third in high rpm’s

@@benranard891 no adjustment on the cable. Check that your cable mount on the top of the trans is good.

thanks, damn i might have an issue with mine, its only been in the trans for about 2 years and only about 16k miles, its a recent noise and its progressively gotten worse

You ain't wrong though. The engine has tons of blowby. Definitely need to pull it out over the winter.

Piston rings and valve stems are known weakness on this engine, but normally you can just throw some new ones in and slap it back together and itl do another 300k.@@RassoolRacing
