Did they make the perfect toy line?
www.valaverse.com
The Kenner DC Super Powers action figures, introduced in 1984, represent a significant chapter in the history of superhero collectibles. These figures were the result of a collaborative effort between Kenner Products and DC Comics, aimed at creating a toy line that not only captured the essence of beloved comic book characters but also stood out in the crowded market of the 1980s.
The inception of the Super Powers line was deeply intertwined with the popularity of DC Comics' characters, who were already household names thanks to television series, comic books, and merchandise. Kenner, buoyed by the success of their Star Wars action figures, sought to replicate that magic by leveraging the rich tapestry of the DC Universe. This decision led to a line that featured a remarkable level of detail and playability, distinguishing it from many contemporaries.
One of the standout features of the Kenner DC Super Powers action figures was their innovative "super power" action. Each figure was designed with a unique action feature activated by squeezing the legs or arms, a gimmick that was both simple and captivating for children. For instance, Superman's legs could be squeezed to make him perform a punching motion, while Wonder Woman's arms would swing her iconic lasso. This feature not only added play value but also closely tied the toys to the abilities of the characters they represented.
The line initially launched with a roster of 12 figures, which included iconic heroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash, alongside notable villains like Lex Luthor, The Joker, and Brainiac. The selection of characters was meticulously planned to include both widely recognized heroes and some lesser-known but equally important figures from the DC canon, ensuring a broad appeal.
Kenner's attention to detail extended beyond the action features to the aesthetics of the figures. Each figure was meticulously sculpted to capture the likenesses as depicted in the comic books, with vibrant colors and well-crafted accessories. This dedication to authenticity was further enhanced by the packaging, which featured dynamic artwork and bios, providing context and background for each character.
The success of the initial wave led to two additional waves of figures, expanding the line to include characters such as Firestorm, Martian Manhunter, Darkseid, and Mr. Freeze. These subsequent waves continued to innovate with new action features and maintained the high standards set by the original figures.
In addition to the standard figures, Kenner also produced several playsets and vehicles, which were integral to the Super Powers collection. The Hall of Justice, for example, served as a headquarters for the heroes, complete with various interactive elements. The Batmobile and Lex-Soar 7 were among the notable vehicles that allowed fans to recreate epic battles and adventures.
The Kenner DC Super Powers action figures were also significant for their influence on the broader action figure market. They set a new standard for articulation and play features, inspiring future lines and establishing benchmarks that would be referenced for years to come. Their popularity was not confined to the United States; they saw significant international distribution, further cementing their legacy.
However, despite their success, the Super Powers line faced challenges. The toy market was becoming increasingly competitive, and Kenner's focus shifted towards other projects by the late 1980s. The final wave of figures saw a more limited release, making some of these figures highly sought after by collectors today.
In retrospect, the Kenner DC Super Powers action figures hold a cherished place in the annals of toy history. They were more than just toys; they were a bridge to the rich storytelling of the DC Universe, allowing children and collectors alike to engage with their favorite superheroes and villains in a tangible way. The line's combination of innovative action features, detailed sculpts, and strong character selection ensured its place as a beloved and influential toy line.
Collectors today continue to seek out these figures, not just for their nostalgia but for their craftsmanship and the joy they brought to countless fans. The Kenner DC Super Powers line is a testament to the enduring appeal of superheroes and the timeless nature of well-made action figures.

You know, I never truly appreciated this line before watching this video. A lot of that is my age. I was a child of the 70s and grew up with Megos. I didn’t become an adult collector until the late 90s, so 80s lines like Super Powers, Masters of the Universe, and GI Joe never registered with me. This video really opened my eyes. I know this is just you being you and talking about a line you love, but your presentation is fantastic.

I love the Super Powers line because it brought Kirby's Fourth World characters into the mainstream for the first time, plus going deep into obscure characters. I also love that DC asked Kirby to redesign some of his New Gods for the line so that he could receive royalties from the toy sales. Very cool decision by then DC heads Paul Levitz and Jeanette Kahn.

I have most of them. In the UK, they only released the 1st series in toy stores. It took me ages to complete the set. Then a few years later, I discovered through a toy magazine, Kenner released more figures such as Firestorm and Green Arrow. I had to go through a UK toy dealer to get them, and they were expensive, even back in the late eighties. Managed to get Plastic Man for £85. Missed out on a few of the villains and obscure heroes due to availability and price. Cyborg was £150, even back in 1990! One of the best action figure lines ever produced. I still have them. Great video 👍🙂

I was born in 1976. I collected that line when I was a kid. None of those characters were third tier or even B-list to me at the time. Nearly all the characters were featured on the Challenge of the Super-Friends animated series. I vividly remember all my classmates and friends wanted Firestorm and Cyborg after they appeared on the cartoon. So many of us were speculating Black Vulcan and Apache Chief were going to make the line.

I was 11 when Super Powers came out and I was hooked. Such a great assortment of characters from DC. I still have my original figures(I don’t have them all from the line)and the Batmobile. I'm pretty sure that Cyclotron and Golden Pharoah were just made up for the toy line. Also, I'm a bit older than you, and I'm not sure I'd call Hawkman a "B list" hero. He was a much bigger deal back then. He had his own comic series that ran for a long time, and he and Hawkgirl were JLA mainstays. They were even frequently featured on the old Superfriends show that inspired this toy line. I've got a bunch of these figures, plus the Batmobile. I've added the new Invisible Jet and Whirlybat from the new Super Powers line, too. I'm not planning on getting them all, just the ones I really like. Or if I find a good deal!

As a kid I got Robin, Flash, Hawkman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Brainiac, Joker, Lex Luthor, Dr. Fate, Martian Manhunter, Firestorm off the shelf between 84-86, mostly from K Mart . . . BUT had so much fun hunting the figures down between 1988 - 1990 at the very back leftover aisles of Salvation Army, collector stores, Kay Bee Toys & Thrifty & found Darksied, Mantis, Kalibak, Green Arrow & Penguin. The rest I got from comic shops, and small Comic Conventions (Shrine Audiorium); and found Mr. Miracle through a local comic book shop insider as "the guy" in 1992 . . this was pre-internet & he sold it to me for $100 in 1992, and he had to vet me at a McDonald's in Burbank to make sure he was selling to a legit collector - like a geek drug deal going down, after I passed his muster by listening to him blabber of how awesome a collector & insider he was, I paid him the $100 cash for a MOC Mr Miracle which I immediately opened in front of his face with my quarter pounder fingers! He just about fainted when I did that . . . TOYS ARE MEANT TO BE PLAYED WITH!

The character assortment in the Kenner Super Powers in 1984 puts McFarlane and Hasbro to shame to this day! They nearly made a complete roster from an animated series in just two years! They even managed to have exclusives that weren't simple recolors of popular characters! I even recall being able to buy Kenner figures at Family Dollar or West Bros. Dollar stores and not retail exclusives for Walmart or Toys-R-Us. Kenner developed an entire world of play in two years with a cartoon and a few commercials. Hasbro has Disney and the entire MCU and still takes 5 years to complete a single team of 6 characters. Hell, McFarlane can't put together 5 Teen Titans! Kenner and Toy Biz used a full roster far better than todays manufacturers.
@larryhynes63
@larryhynes63 Месяц назад
This line should have lasted a couple more years. Kenner's big mistake was focusing too much on Kirby's New Gods characters (Darkseid, Orion..etc) and their own made up characters (Cyclotron, Golden Pharoah) instead of capitalizing on more known (and necessary) characters...Bizarro, Supergirl, Sinestro, Riddler, Scarecrow, Catwoman and of course the Teen Titans which were insanely popular at the time.
@MonsterKidCory
@MonsterKidCory Месяц назад
I always thought that was weird, even at the time. DC has never had the strongest villains, but come on. They didn't even do half the actual ones from the comics, and missed out on dozens of viable heroes. I was collecting Justice League International at the time and none of them showed up in the line.
@danielstjohn3018

Good post... Yes, ... I wished they hadn't gone with Cyclotron, Golden Pharaoh...and those guys... but had focused on the characters you suggested ...like the Teen Titans, Bizarro, Sinestro, ....etc. Such a shame the line ended prematurely... because they were all great figures.

Super Powers was not on my radar as a 70's kid. Cannonball Run, Smokey & the Bandit, BJ & the Bear, Convoy, Airwolf, Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, A team, Transformers etc.. made me a fan of vehicle toys! As an adult I got heavy into DC classics/club infinite Earths. I have 99% of them. The homages paid to SUPER POWERS were awesome. often it's a scale issue therefore, I often cherry pick MacVerse. Picking up characters that Mattel didn't make. Highly appreciate you sharing your SP + collection with us, Capt! ✌🏼

There were at least three Super Powers comic book mini-series. One of those mini-series had a whole team of enemies with a fist logo on their chest. Bobby, I still had to laugh: I share your view that “figures need to breathe” hence why I shake my head with going to a blister card for series 4 - I want to keep the packaging, but they need to breathe…. And then safely go back into their chamber to display and store. If you are trying to cut costs by going to blister, I for one will pay the additional $3 the box packaging allows.

Agreed... It was darn near perfect and SUCH a nostalgic throwback for me. I bought several of them, but the bulk of my collection came from the Shell Oil promotion. I kept finding coupons to get one for free (or cheap) with a fill-up, so I hounded my parents to go there. I've been tempted to regain some of that nostalgia by getting the equivalent figures in the DC Multiverse line, but that's too much money and too much space and I've already missed some of the ideal figures for it. The McFarlane Super Powers is out because the sculpts on Superman and Batman are so bad compared to the originals, and I have issues with spending real money on deliberately retro, poorly-articulated figures like those and ReAction. So I'll have to make do looking at collections like yours!

I still have my Superman with his cape. Martian Manhunter is missing his cape. Those are my last two left. And I still have a 89 Batman with the retractable belt

Bobby - You need to get your hands on the latest Mafex Crusader Batman! a great modern version of the Kenner Superpowers version in my opinion. Wish they'd make more based on that line. :)

Why didn't you talk about the Hall of Justice or any of the vehicles? There were some play sets and vehicles for Darkseid and his minions.

This line came out when I was a teen and too emberassed to get figures anymore (and no idea what to do with them even had I worked up the nerve) but I loved looking at them in the toy isles. It brought back (and still does) of my own childhood favorites, the Mego Pocket Heroes. It was awesome seeing which ones we'd hoped for but never got (like Flash, GL and Green Arrow) and ones that we never dared hope for (Dr. Fate? An actual Earth-Two character??). Some choices were puzzlers though; no Supergirl or Two-Face but the Golden Pharoah and Cyclone? And some were disappointing after so long a wait: NOT the green-skinned Brainiac or Bubble helmeted spandexed Mr. Freeze I grew up with. And a Plas whose only gimick is a longer neck? Even a bendy figure of him would've been more appropriate. Shame the cartoon didnt last long enough to showcase some other greats, like the LSH or Black Lightning so we could've seen at least a few more figures.

My friend, Never be embarrassed about your nerd hobbies and entertainment interests. I read comic books in my teens and it translated to toys @35. I've got a friend who was a Walmart manager around the time DC classics was out. He helped me score some of the exclusives. At his store during one of our trades a co-worker of his tried to clown(embarrass) him for being a toy collector; "I'm a tell everyone you play with toys!" My friend said,"you're too late, everybody knows me, it's all over my social media." LoL KAPOW! the dude had nothing to say, but "So, are these the Super friends? I've never heard of the Atom..." 😁 As for Super Powers line; I don't collect those, but I have all the DC CLASSICS and they did a great homage to the line with their own series. Live long and prosper/ May the Force be with you/ Peace and blessings! Happy collecting!

Yes! We need more bad guys for the heroes to battle. It's always weird when the heroes outnumber the bad guys.

Do you collect the McFarlane Super Powers? The first couple waves sucked but the more recent ones with Batman, Sinestro, Peacemaker, Brainiac, Blue Beetle, etc definitely live up the Super Powers branding and fit right in the the Kenner figures

Bobby, have you ever opened a figure up to see how the mechanism worked? Would producing a toy with these types of action features really cost a lot, doesn't seem like there's much to the actual mechanism. Also have you been getting any of the mcfarlane super power figures?
