Toyota has owned the midsize truck market for 30 plus years but is that about to change?
Today we are looking at the cost of ownership of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Does the lack of power for the price effect your opion of the pickup truck?
Today Dave is asking WTF is the thought process with this truck.

For certain! I was so jacked up for a 2024 Off Road Hybrid but I’m gagging on the price for the truck I’d like without the hybrid so far…… I’m going to bide my time time and see how sales go. The rumored Stout is very interesting to me.

I bought the 23 Tacoma a month ago BECAUSE of the new 4 cylinder that was coming. Been driving Toyota trucks since 1990. I didn’t want to buy a first year re design especially with the smaller engine. Seeing the new prices makes me happy about my new/old 3rd gen!

When they gave us 4 cylinders, the untold rule was we would much better mpg. In reality, we got 1 mpg better than last. In return, we got, unknown reliability, much more expensive ,less capability (cant tow much), manual in expensive trims

I think Toyota should have an optional 6 cylinder for the new Tacoma. I will never get a 4 cylinder Tacoma. The 4 cylinder Tacoma engine will not be as reliable as the 6 cylinder. A turbo runs at about 50,000 RPM. The bearings wear and the life of a turbo 4 cylinder will not last as long as the 6 naturally aspirated engine. There will be no long term reliability as with the 6.
@RottenAnimal
@RottenAnimal 7 месяцев назад
Also. If you use your Tacoma for hauling heavy equipment or towing the 4 cylinder will probably take more gas than the 6. The 4 cylinder also has to work harder and have much higher revs to do the same job that the 6 will do'. That means, it will wear much more and burn out much faster.

I am really interested to see if Nissan's plan for holding out the Frontier in the value segment works out for them. I mean it is a great true mid "size" truck it just doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles that most people probably don't need for long term reliability.
@Hootch1
@Hootch1 7 месяцев назад
The 2024 Tacoma hybrid batteries will cost around 5,000 to replace. As the Tacoma ages it won’t get the same resale value because of this factor. Plus turbo charger repairs will also be very expensive.

After the initial hype dies down I think they will need to sell these at a discount. I think the Frontier is going to have a good sales year as the last N/A V-6 standing. I really like the new Taco but in all the videos I've watched it kind of sounds like a tractor. Do you have to spend even more to get a smoother more powerful ride with the hybrid? The hybrid will be fast but I don't need a stoplight drag racer in a midsize truck. I know low end torque is great but I still like the smooth linear power of a NA V-6.

Just bought 2023 SR5 4 banger . With a 2 wheel drive it rides nice I luv it. I did not want a 4 wheel drive . I want to keep it simple as I don't tow a thing. I don't even care to go off road a muddy up the undercarriage. I find the Tacoma Reliable and Durable. BTW Turbo will run your engine out faster.

You summed it up at the end. I would like a TRD OR. Too pricey. TRD Sport. Still too pricey. I am buying at the end of 2024. I am guessing SR5 will be my only option at that point. If so, I will strongly consider one of the other 5 midsize trucks or may even consider a base trim 1/2 ton lightly optioned as a better value in terms of tow capacity and payload for towing our small camper and hauling camping gear.

In about a year I want to buy a Tacoma TRD Offroad with manual trans. No option packages, so hopefully no more than $45,000. It sounds like your main concern is the engine power. In about six months the hybrid will be out - giving a lot more power due to an electric motor in-line (serial) with the gas engine. I don't want the hybrid myself, but it will offer more power.

Now I'm biased because I think that paying 50k for any vehicle is nuts, I'm just not in that income bracket, but I think the price for some of these models is just too high for what you get. I've always loved the Toyota 4x4 but the Toyota Tax is just unreal nowadays. And Dave, recession does Not justify a big increase in price. This is Bidenomics in action. $30k for an entry level minitruck is dumb, and Nissan is just as dumb @ $29k. But $52k is inexcusable. At least Nissan is $40K for a Pro4x (but $45k for the Hardbody Edition is milking it a bit) Particularly that Toyota moved everything down to Mexico the price increase is Absolutely Inexcusable. The cheaper labor should have allowed them to be competitive with or undercut Nissan and everyone else.
