How Reliable is the New 2024 Toyota Tacoma? Bye forever, durable naturally aspirated engines.

Toyota is deviating from its traditions, and reliable naturally aspirated engines on the new 2024 Fourth generation Tacoma are now a thing of the past. In their place comes the new turbocharged 2.4L T24A-FTS turbo I4 (TZNA40/41/45/46), along with a hybrid version, the 2.4L T24A-FTS turbo I4 (TZNH47). The question arises: how will this impact the reliability of a model that has been the epitome of dependability and the market leader in midsize pickups for all these years? Let's also discuss other components, such as the new transmissions - the 6-speed manual (RC60F) and the 8-speed automatic (AL80E/F). Additionally, we'll delve into what to expect from the upgraded TNGA: GA-F platform with new suspension and electronics.

There seems to be a surplus of turbos. I don’t believe it’s in the interests of us, the owners. They are bowing to politics at our expense

The 2.4 turbo has been around for years in various Lexus models and has already proven to be exceptionally reliable and it is not uncommon to go several hundred thousand miles so long as you do your part and take care of the vehicle. That said, what people really want is a turbo diesel…
@austinwade3194
@austinwade3194 Месяц назад
This turbo 2.4 has been out since 2021 and you are saying.... not uncommon to go several hundred thousand miles in 4 years? I would say that would be extremely uncommon.. and even when it does happen... its very low cycle.. highway only driving, and is next to completely meaningless. Lastly none of these Lexus vehicles have or will ever be pushed like the Tacoma will be...
@deantrainr
@deantrainr 28 дней назад
Most people in the U.S.A. could care less about reliability unfortunately; all they care about is having the best and the coolest vehicle in their neighborhood, bottom line. So it doesn’t really matter if the Tacoma has the V6 or an engine with a turbocharger, they just want to be noticed and acknowledged by everyone around them.

Higher octane does not mean higher quality. It only means resistance to knocking in higher compression engines and has nothing to do with preventing carbon build up.

Higher octane fuels do indeed help prevent carbon build up you are wrong.
@dcl97
@dcl97 5 месяцев назад
I'm a powertrain engineer and that is very incorrect, although I'd love to hear your reasoning. Octane is simply a measurement of fuel stability, essentially the amount of compression it takes for a fuel to auto-ignite. Higher octane means you can compress the air fuel mixture more without the risk of auto ignition prior to spark, and therefore yield more power. Now do some companies add additional detergents (which may reduce carbon buildup) to their higher octane fuels to add additional perceived value? Yes, but that has absolutely nothing to do with octane itself.

@jamesmclawhorn8259 5 месяцев назад
@BangBang-hk4rg I get it. 4x4 makes it safer and easier. Just remember, up til the 80s men took 2wd trucks everywhere 4wd goes now. Realistically, unless you're mudding a rear locker, good tires, clearance and speed beat almost any obstacle. So Toyota slaps on tires, a lift, a locker and a suspension upgrade on a 2wd and calls it off road.

This is absolute nonsense. I have owned several Hilux’s (2.4, 2.8 & 3.0L diesels as well as a 2.7 and 4.0 petrol V6 in Africa and more recently a 2.8 diesel in Europe. I do not expect the new Tacoma to has major issues like they did with the 2016 Tacoma. However, I do not expect the new engine to last as long as the 3.5L or 2.7L that were in the previous gen Tacoma. The frame seems to be too robust and strong for that little truck. Therefore, I expect the ride to be stiffer and not to be pleasant under certain road conditions. In addition, it appears that newer Toyotas have problems with the interior's plastics, which seem to break easily. My biggest gripe with the new Tacoma, however, is the pricing. This trucks have become so expensive that the only way I can admire having one will be on a wall poster. If people are smart, they should keep their current trucks and not buy this overpriced truck. Let the greedy management wonder why no one is buying this thing.

Due to a stiffer frame doesn't mean the ride is stiffer (reviewers have said it isn't). It's better to have a stiffer frame and let the suspension do its work. A twisting frame makes for a wishy washy ride and less control.
@user-fp9rv2bn6f
@user-fp9rv2bn6f 5 месяцев назад
@@dalefrolander3583When you drive it let me know if you like it. The stiffer frame means more vibration transferred to the riders. Why do you think they put hydrolic mounts on the cab of the upper trims of the Tundra? Do you think they will do that on the cheap Tacoma? There is no way the ride will be plush on that thing unless you are riding on a very good road. We will see who is right.

EVERYONE worships the Tacoma? That's a downright lie. Agree it is a nice truck, agree many do, but is not a true statement to state EVERYONE. Other than that, the video itself is good and give caution to small engines being turbocharged. I passed up a Colorado due to the 2.7L turbo and went with a Frontier with a good old fashioned 3.8L NA engine. For me, turbos belong on big block Diesels. I live in ID and have never warmed up a trans and believe me, we have winters...as I write this it is 7 degrees outside. However, I do not spin the wheels, just easy take off. If there was a big problem with a trans, they need to program it to start out in 2nd gear to heat up the fluid faster.
@thelonglastexpert
@thelonglastexpert 5 месяцев назад
I think you don't have a high mileage on your car. It's your choice not to warm up the transmission; I hope you avoid any issues. Nissan is an interesting choice. However, the 3.8 engine has direct injection, which requires careful maintenance and the use of quality fuel. From your comment, I understand you have a Nissan. What is the designation of the nine-speed transmission on this model?

This video is making long term reliability guesses. This video is a little premature. I drive a 1985 Toyota with the stock 22RE engine. It has passed the reliability test. 😉 (currently 280,000 on the odometer) I did notice one contradiction. Avoid prolonged idling of the engine and avoid driving without a fairly lengthy warmup for the transmission. 🤔
@thelonglastexpert
@thelonglastexpert 4 месяца назад
If all engines were as reliable as the 22RE in the 4runner, I wouldn't have a job😂 Regarding the premature video, I presented all the information in the video by analyzing data from the entire internet. Nevertheless, I respect any opinion backed by usage experience. As for idling the engine, I will clarify that minimal warm-up before starting is necessary for both the gearbox and the engine. However, it's a different matter if you have already had a long trip, stopped, and left the engine running without turning it off for an hour while going to the supermarket. Using the engine in this way, it's not surprising that the engine started to consume oil and all cylinders ended up with scoring. Wishing your 22RE a long service life

@thelonglastexpert
@thelonglastexpert 5 месяцев назад
In this case, the 7mgte doesn't serve as an illustration of reliability; primarily, this frame showcases Toyota's old car manufacturing. Perhaps 'dated' would have been a better description, but this is original content, and the author chose to use this specific word, and that's their choice. Now, regarding the aluminum engine, take a look at the thermal conductivity of aluminum. Or are you suggesting that aluminum engines are not prone to overheating?
