Just a bit of info here: Barring a few stand out exceptions, the majority of V-tubers all are hired by agencies. These agencies dictate how the V-tuber behaves, if they utilize a voice changer, or not, and produces the avatar that the V-tuber uses. Very often, the talent (the V-tuber in question) has no say in what their avatar looks like, and due to how contracts are written in South Korea (where the majority of V-tube companies originate), as well as in Japan; they are forbidden from commenting on the guise or persona they present online. Furthermore, they don't do their own editing. Rather, the agency that hires them takes content from live streams which the talent produces, edits it, and then publishes it on the talent's respective channels and social media. Furthermore, it's very common for their agencies to tell the talent things like "You must produce a video on this subject, and say these things during it." So you end up with a lot of videos from each agency that looks like carbon copies of each other. That's the agency's instruction, and since the talent are employees, if they wish to keep their employment, they will toe the line. Also, Loli (pronounced "Low-lee", not "lah-lee", taken from the name "Lolita" from the book of the same name) is very popular in places like China, Japan, and South Korea. This is due to a much lower than average 'age of consent' present in those nations. Unlike western nations, where on average the "age of consent" when someone may legally engage in sexual activities, is eighteen years of age. In those three specific countries, the age is considerably lower. China for example has an age of consent of fourteen. Japan and South Korea share an age of consent of sixteen, though that is a very recent change, as until June of 2023, the age of consent in Japan was thirteen years of age. Because of these lowered ages of consent, when compared with western nations, it became popular in the media presented there to sexualize those who, in western nations would be considered under age. This creates a good bit of confusion with western viewers, where the question of the legality of loli, or lolicon type content legality still hasn't been addressed fully in the legal system. Whatever the case, due to the popularity of this content in places like Japan, South Korea, and China (where the lion's share of V-tubers both originate from, and advertiser money is generated) V-tuber agencies tend to lean into this type of trend. It wouldn't be unlike how, due to the popularity of a particular sport in one country, a company may lean into that popularity and create its company image around supporting it or presenting an association with it.

The way I see it, vtubers in general are just a third option in-between the options of showing your face and not showing which has always existed, though with a much higher percentage of people playing persona.

Apparently I'm great at talking to cops I'm brown, I was with a group of my black friends we were high but not actively smoking, an waiting for an Uber to take us home. 3 cops came up to us and I wish I could remember what I said but I ran pro interference while we waited, my friends just got in the Uber and called for me and I remember getting stunned praise on the ride home. Ok so, Tyler, I love you, but please please please, try to be a tiny bit more concise, we are 24 minutes in and you have yet to play any of the video in question, and whatever aside you are talking about, I have no context for. I am so lost.

One thing that I’ve noticed with Vtubers is that they’re usually split along very clear lines. Corporate Vtubers who play characters for multimillion dollar companies, Big Indies who are often very close with Corporate Vtubers and collaborate and such, and Small Indies who will often go down a few roads: Staying small, breaking into the Corporate space under a new alias, or growing into the Big Indie category. Now, one thing I’ve noticed is that the more you move away from big companies like Hololive and Vshojo and more towards smaller companies and smaller indies, the more you are likely to encounter strange right-wing phenomena. There is one agency that has some… questionable talents (I won’t name names here as I generally don’t know how much of these specific ones are genuinely lost in the 4chan sauce or are just playing up a character for an audience due to conflicting messages and things of that nature) but I’d chock that up to 4chan largely making them their agency to rally around. For corporate Vtubers and Big Indies, I’ve mostly seen either generally progressive or liberal personalities, if not entirely apolitical. And if they do hold some conservative views, they hold them quite close to their chest. And this is because these people are big, like generally on the level of other big youtubers and influencers. As such, they appeal to a more general audience beyond that of the small audience of anime fans that were present when Vtubing started. And as the majority society generally skews more liberal, the talents are going to appeal to the majority. (Side note: This isn’t me saying they are insincere with their views or opinions, I’m sure a large percentage of them are genuinely fine people. But we also can’t ignore the fact that they are under a business, a business that may influence the things they are allowed to express in order to maintain their revenue. Sucks, but that’s how it is.) Same holds true for lots of Big Indie Vtubers, though less so considering they are not under contract. But the trend still holds, with a lot of them being, at least externally, generally progressive and tolerant people, with you rarely seeing a fully dyed in the wool, lost in the sauce righty Big Indie (though there are arguably a few, though I don’t want to get into hearsay, guilty by association, or any of that unhelpful stuff.) But as you get smaller and smaller, you see a marked shift. Personalities more willing to cater to a specific sub genre of anime/vtuber fan. Or more specifically, sub genres, plural. Because you’ll have people who consider themselves apolitical who buy into the whole “get politics out of media” idea and thus don’t agree when a Vtuber they like says “Trans Rights” or decides not to play a certain video game for some reason. Then you also have the generally conservative anime viewer, who appreciates a Vtuber that agrees with their views and that’s it. Maybe not a full on /pol/ denizen, but they agree with some anti-woke talking points. And then you have your run of the mill chuds. I don’t need to explain this too thoroughly, you know who I’m talking about. People with Nazi edits of K-on! pfps and the like. All of these people can exist within the same ecosystem without conflict, and these Vtubers can capitalize on their desires all at the same time, using both ideology and, let’s be blunt, sex appeal to attract a niche of right wing followers who radicalize both each other and the Vtuber themself. The degree to which the Vtuber genuinely buys into the talking points rather than just using them as shiny keys to jingle in front of their audience varies, but at what point does it matter? Also let’s not forget that a lot of support for Vtubers in big agencies like Hololive abroad, before they opened their EN branch, came from 4chan. And while it’s generally unhelpful to paint all of 4chan as Nazis or on their way to being Nazis, as it’s simply not the case (a lot of them are self-loathing trans women like I was and still kinda am), it’s undeniable that the cancer from pol is going to leak out into the vtubing board occasionally. It’s just a consequence of lax moderation and little to no borders between boards. That’s not to argue that bigotry is core to the Vtubing community’s fandom, it’s just acknowledging that a small proportion (like the one we see latching onto these smaller indies, along with a few bigger exceptions like I mentioned earlier) has always existed. Also, don’t know if this needs to be said, but not all small Vtubers are grifters. A lot of them are queer or just nice people in general. TL;DR, the bigger you are the more likely you are to be normal, but the smaller you are the more likely you are to fall into the grift trap. But this is correlation based on anecdote from my experience watching and researching Vtubers, not a hard science. Don’t assume before you acquire hard evidence. (association, accident, juvenility, hearsay and the like are not evidence.) Edit: I just realized my dumbass forgot to address Small Agency Vtubers. But being honest, these can be mixed bags depending on who is running them so it’s hard to really fit it into the “how likely are you to meet a white supremacist in chat?” sliding scale. Generally, they are like Small Indie in that you might find agencies like the one in this video that are just content mills and are automated key-jangling machines for bigots. And then there are smaller agencies that are basically like Vtuber unions, where a bunch of Vtubers basically are together in order to support each other and just do normal streamer shit otherwise, which are absolutely great! So I just gotta caveat all this with: Remember, it’s a likelihood, not a garuntee. It’s a correlation, not a direct causation. Do your due diligence before determining if someone is a bigot or not, don’t do anything rash without evidence.

I just wanna say the very high pitched nasally 'loli' voice is a real phenomenon and I've known several women who just talk like that and can't help it.
