Your repeated viewers on this channel are all enjoying you two “city slickers” sharing your progress creating a farm & homestead out in the quiet countryside in Thailand. Ages ago I took a chance around your age and accepted a job in Africa despite people thinking I was crazy to give up my job security. I ended up loving the adventure and learning experience which resulted me to live and work in five different countries over three decades. I am glad I made the “big move” when I was a healthy, young adult. Being in a new country always has its challenges ( at first) and you have doubled the challenge with farming (No, it’s tripled. You also have two little ones!) 😝 You two are a good team, sensible and able to laugh and support one another. You’re making priceless memories with your kids and each other. 👍🏽 Congratulations.

Reflecting on my own experiences and observations, I truly believe that your decision to move from the UK to Thailand is a wise one. There are several reasons why life in Thailand can be more fulfilling and less stressful. One of the most striking aspects of life in Thailand is the strong sense of community and family. It's common to see the younger generation taking care of the elderly, creating a supportive and caring environment. This is a stark contrast to what I've observed in the UK, where many elderly people often face struggles alone. The cost of living in Thailand is generally more affordable, with no council tax or property tax once you own your property. This can significantly reduce financial stress and allow you to enjoy life more. The weather in Thailand allows for a more outdoor lifestyle, and even those with limited means can find shelter and food at temples. In the UK, many people have to make tough choices between heating and eating due to high electricity costs. Lastly, healthcare in Thailand is accessible and of good quality. It's free for Thais over a certain age. In contrast, the UK's healthcare system, while comprehensive, is often struggling with long waiting times and lack of support. In conclusion, while every country has its pros and cons, the sense of community, lower cost of living, better weather, and good healthcare make Thailand a great place to live. I believe you've made a wise decision. Enjoy your new life in Thailand! I did the same and am never going back!

I agree with everything you mentioned except the healthcare in Thailand. Thailand healthcare system doesn't work well for Thais. There's also long waiting time to get service in Thai government hospitals. If you want quick and good service, you have to go to private hospitals which most Thais can't afford to go there. Most expats don't have this problem because they can afford to go to private hospitals. Btw, I am Thai and a healthcare worker.

@@NativeFarang You can grow napia grass or stevia to chop up chicken feed. It can reduce the cost of food and can be fermented to make food for other animals as well. For vegetable growing areas Sprinkler watering system should be placed. planting coriander leaves It is in demand in the market and has a good price, but let's make a slan to block the light. with steel frame then use a wire rope You can find clips about farming of Thai people everywhere. Rubbish,Recycling….. I remember feeling abit helpless myself when I moved to deep rural Thailand, all plastics,cardboard/paper, aluminium/metal cans are fully recycled in Thailand ( you can sell all of it ! ) first off get some large bins to sort out all the materials , find out where the local recycle merchant is - when your bins are full take them there an you’ll be paid !!

nate the main thing is to get the farm fenced six foot high, and fence the things you dont want eaten and let the chickens do the weeding, and your ponds make concreate ponds start from the pond and make each one higher so you can have flow of water from one pond to the next and back into the pond, then you can have lots of ponds easy to clean and harvest in stages, also look at crayfish and snails and frogs, check out some of the youtubes vidios there are some good ones out there. do it in small stages make wooden mould for fence post do one at a time
@NativeFarang

A fence around the farm is a great idea! The only thing with letting the chickens out is we want to start growing more vegetables, dig up the weeds and plant between the trenches, so we wouldn't want those getting eaten too 😅

The issues you mentioned about England are the same issues and even worse here in the US. There are two great divides; the conservatives and liberals…it’s awful. I’ve been to Thailand 30 times since 2005 doing compassion trips in ethnic minority villages, refugee camps and orphans. I’ve fallen in love with the country which means I’ve fallen in love with the people who make up the culture. I hope to retire there in the next couple of years. Until then, I get to live vicariously through your vlog. Thanks for what you do.

Thanks for the video which I enjoyed. I was born in a tropical environment so I can understand what you are saying but I was not a farmer. I was about to ask that you do not have dogs till you showed them and spoke about them. Glad that you feed the wandering dogs. I think they could be very useful. Since you are raising chickens you might attract pythons or animals which want to eat your chickens, so the dogs may come in handy and give you warnings. In this video I did not see any night footage like, Are there any lights near your chicken shed, or how do the family spend the nights after a hard day's work. Cheers and good to know that both of you are enjoying your life there.

Thank you for watching, we're glad you enjoyed! Yes luckily the dogs are very protective of us and our farm so that definitely helps! We do love having them for that aspect, but we'd love an actual dog of our own one day 😊 And we have a solar powered light on our chicken hut, hopefully it helps deter snakes etc, so far so good! In the evenings we mostly just chill inside or in the hammocks on our porch, occasionally we go to a night market. But we're looking to get a dining table to put on our porch and a seating area near the pond so we can start enjoying our meals outside etc 😊 Thank you so much 🙏

Yes , communication is a definate problem here in Thailand. We wanted 2 roofs extended out from existing roofs - we had a thai translator to help explain. - we agreed on a price and they started . they finished the first roof and i asked when they gonna start the lower roof ? What lower roof guy said . Yup- oh you want another roof - read extra money. So-you know what you need to do. Draw up a plan ( diagram) with exact measurements. If you want anything done , get them to sign it as assurance that they understand it. Lived in London for a couple of years- very true about the agression. I got shoulder barged in the library once ( THE LIBRARY !!! ) Couple of street fights and multiple close calls. I am much happier in Thailand. Cheers for the Vid

hi guys thanks for sharing, ok negatives first, if you feed the dogs they will stay stop feeding them and they will gradually come less and less, or keep feeding them and adopt as your own, but their owner may want them back at some point or compensation, fish trenches don't appear to be working, is the water seeping away or just natural evaporation, maybe could dig to 2 or 3 small ponds for different types of fish and use the soil to back fill your trenches this would also free up the land to grow fruits and vegetables or any other projects you want i know this would be at a cost but worth considering, again thanks for sharing and you really have hit the ground running take comfort from your successes and learn from your mistakes, Camilla how is your Thai speaking going, i know when I'm in Thailand i struggle with the tones and village i go to in Surin most people speak Khmer with a little Thai, Laos, Issaan mixed in so its super confusing for me but like to try rather than get my partner to translate all the time, every place has its positives and negatives and its only natural to compare your western lifestyle to your new Thai lifestyle (same same but different) as they say, wishing you all the best of luck but i somehow think you wont need it, life is for living and your courage to make the move to Thailand is already being rewarded keep smiling and enjoying life cheers.

Ahh yes, the dogs are really nice but as I say they're just not ours. We may buy a little pup anyways in future but will carry on feeding these ones. As for the trenches we are still in limbo as to whether we keep them or do something different on the land. Camila's still picking odd bits of Thai up but we know that the language isn't going to be learnt overnight so just got to accept that it'll come in time.

I think you've answered your own question about making a mistake - the smiles on your faces answer that. The trenches are a bit of a pain. But if all else fails - could you get them filled in and dug straight or could you expand the pond you already have OR could you build a new pond? I know it's money, but if you ask around, there might be some builders who have the equipment and are delayed on a job - rather than wait for the job the start they might come and do a couple of day's work on the farm filling in and digging new holes. With regard to the plastic, might be worth checking to see if there is anyone that will collect the plastic - our friends have a man who comes and collects all their plastic, bottles and tins - no charge as he then sells it - just a thought? You guys are doing a great job 😇

Learn from your mistakes. Shouldn’t you have supervise the digging of the trenches. The layout, depth, width, the direction & straightness, etc. When I visit my friend in Isaan, I always try to buy things not packed in plastic for their everyday used. Yeah plastics are hard to disposed. Planted a few mango sapling we bought from a shop years ago. Many years later, my friend point to the trees and said ‘These are the mangoes we bought last times’ 😳 Wow! p.s. Every household grows mangoes. No one buys. Plant only for self consumption.

Whats the expression? This is Thailand? tbh things are much better in modern Thailand than years ago (thinking back 30 years); modern Thailand is a nice balance between old and new. I suppose the big question for you is can you make a living farming in Thailand? I don't see alot of farmers making money so you might need to try out different things and hussle a bit to make money (like the Thais do). We did bits of Thai farming, and came to the conclusion we would just do it for fun, making our own food and sharing any extra with friends and family. We prefer Thai country (where we live) to Thai city (dirty and noisy). Anyways wishing you good luck, and I am sure this youtube channel will create lots of opportunities for you.

as for plastic bottles , you'll need to stop buying bottled beverages and just pick up potable water along with your supply of chicken feed and what-not using a large capacity water tank, which would mean buying a work-horse pick truck. Lemon water is the BEST.

speaking of potable water, be sure to hydrate yourselves well the night before a day's sweltering farm work, same for your kids. And be sure to hydrate all throughout the day, strap a canteen of water around your wastes. Or buy camel-pack hydration back packs. But that would mean insulating heat on your back, you'll want heat and sweat to dissipate off your backs so a canteen around your waist would be best.
