When you are walking dogs at a shelter do you use the same technique? I would love to see a video of you at the shelter walking dogs and talking about the jumping, pulling, reactivity and making every opportunity count to get ready for their forever home. Thx.

I have 12 month old working type Labrador and she pulls on the lead. I’ve spent hours trying to train her not to, and I know she can do it (eg when she is in a dog training class, when she is practically perfect, even off lead) but as soon as the trainer is out of eyeshot it is nose down again, in hedges trying to ferret out prey, walking her isn’t that much fun at times. I know the only way is more training but I’m at a loss as feel she knows what to do, but only does it when it suits her. Any ideas?

I have a 9 month old Brittany that total forgotten I am on lead. Pulling me over and Pulling the German shepherd and me along. He is strong and over sized 23inch and 23.4kg. Loves being with me at home. Help I am getting to the point I don't want to walk him. I got home after Friday just sat and cried.

Oh Vicki, our hearts go out to you. Leash pulling can be so painful and frustrating. We can completely relate and appreciate your tears. We have many many podcasts discussing leash struggles (find them here: podcast.absolute-dogs.com/) and we've also designed an entire mini course it's also 40% off for Boxing Day right now. We also want to say you have full permission to not walk him. As long as he's getting his bathroom needs met, and enrichment and exercise through games at home, you are doing exactly what you need to do to provide the best quality care for him. Rehearsal is the mother of skill after all, there's so much opportunity to set him up for success and for ease for you! Here's a link to the Stop Pulling course absolute-dogs.com/product/stop-pulling-mini-course/

I have a year old standard poodle male ,I use a holty and collar he hates the holty even tho I’ve always used it ,he is reactive as soon as we see any other dogs ..has even turned himself on his back when rearing up . I use treats all the time and I’ve used it ever since a pup ,,I play games all the time and do close walking which he is good at but how do I stop this reactive behaviour as I walk past someone …he cries at everything else that moves around us …and is reactive as soon as anything comes near us .

Hey Angie, we can totally appreciate the struggle. We would suggest growing his Disengagement skills, Calmness, and Optimism, outside of the situation rather than in the situation. This may mean Ditching the Walks for a period of time, invest in growing Calmness through games and enrichment activities at home, which will allow his Stress Bucket to empty. Currently, he's experiencing so much reactivity on his walks he's not in a state where he can learn. We have lots of programs that grow the skills to overcome reactivity and get you two to a place where you can start reshaping the walks and enjoy a calmer, more peaceful experience. To get started, here's a link to our free ebook all about Reactivity absolutedog.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/2022_Resources/Unpredictable_Dog_Play book.pdf

My dog does not like her lead at all. She did not like her collar but I have found one that she feels comfortable with. But when I clip her lead on she drops to the floor and rolls on her back and gets sooky. Is there something I can do to help the situation?

She might like a martingale collar, Weiss walkie lead and or freedom harness. When she puts on the brakes try enticing her with high value treats like warm hot dog pupperoni or chicken. Something she loves and only gets when she walks on a lead. Toss treats away from her so she has to move forward to get them. Start close and gradually increase distance. Pay attention to her body language and if she is frightened take your training in smaller doses to not overwhelm her until she builds more confidence. You can do several times a day but always be aware of when it is getting to much so you can end on a positive note.

You might even start inside without the lead to show her what you want when the lead is on then when she is really good at that put the lead on and do same thing inside and when she is good with that venture outdoors and let her tell you how far she is confident with.
