Diesel Generator Starts then Shuts Down

This is a 13.5 KW diesel generator powered by a Lister-Petter LW3 three cylinder diesel engine. It ran fine a month ago, but three weeks ago we had a lighting strike that took out a lot of electronics and shut down our grid power. I tried to start the generator, which was NOT connected thru the transfer switch to the grid, and it would start and after a few seconds shut down, the start again, and shut down. Watch the fuel cutoff solenoid. Any help in trouble shooting would be appreciated. For some reason the sound does not match the actual running and shut down at the halfway part).

It was the AVR-Automatic Voltage Regulator. A small circuit board available on Amazon for about $30. It has to be adjusted on its small rheostat for voltage once installed.

Check the exciter coil.. when they burn they shut off.

For some reason the engine is being told to shutdown then, low oil pressure maybe????

It was the small circuit board inside the lower black box. It was the AVR, or Automatic Voltage Regulator. It had a blown bit on the circuit board. We replaced the board ($28 on Amazon) and adjusted the voltage on it and it ran fine. It was due to a lightning strike nearby they traveled up the ground wire.

Turned out to be a small circuit board inside the generator itself on the side under a panel. It's the AVR or Automatic Voltage Regulator. It has to sense the generator producing voltage or it shuts the engine down.

Yes. it was the AVR circuit board. Found one on Amazon for $29 so I bought two! It failed due to nearby lightning strike. It wasn't even on the grid but took the it thru the ground cable.
