Chinese diesel heater power cut. A test to destruction? So, everyone says my Chinese diesel heater will go bad if the the power supply fails. I put it to the test, what will happen to my Chinese diesel heater if there is a power cut? should I have a battery back up for my Chinese diesel heater? Chinese diesel heater demonstrated. Test to destruction?
No batteries required, no battery power cut demonstration

The amount of mis information and misunderstanding going around this is amazing… Firstly, no, I don’t expect a catastrophic failure with power loss, that would just be silly. Secondly, the “cool down” phase isn’t actually a cool down fade. If you monitor your power draw during the shut down you will see it actually spikes to maximum. This is done to burn off any excesses build up of carbon and not let it accumulate. Just about every heater actually has a setting(at least my $160 unit does) to adjust how much voltage you want to pump into the unit during shut down. Lastly, yes, frequent power drops, especially ones that aren’t immediately restored, will eventually “kill” the unit with excess building to the point where it won’t run anymore.
@STTC
@STTC Год назад
Cheers for the comment, no idea what you mean by adjusting voltage? it’s a 12v machine and that doesn’t change. You also can’t change that, really confused. It’s definitely not misinformation either, the book calls it a cooling down phase. Great comment though, you definitely don’t need a battery, waste of time, my heater has failed a few times abruptly over 10 years and it’s fine. That’s all the proof I need. take it easy, cheers for subscribing

Does this come with an IDIOT WARNING? Firstly the unburnt fuel will coat the chamber. But most importantly the chamber if running on full heat is potentially going to OVERHEAT the circuit board and possibly the casing with no AIRFLOW cooling it. Basically you're just lucky and that's it.

@larrypinter3321
@larrypinter3321 Год назад
The circuit board for this style of heater is on the cool, air intake end. Incoming air flows over the board, keeping it and components cool. It then flows over the heat exchanger part of the heater, is heated, and blown into whatever space you are heating. During normal power down, the glow plug fires up again and the heater is on high to burn off carbon deposits. After a little while, all heating stops, but the incoming cold air continues to flow over the circuit board and heat exchanger until total shut down. If there is an unexpected cut to power while the heater is in operation and thus hot, the blower can't suck in cold air, and no air flows over the circuit board of heat exchanger. The residual heat is trapped in there, and it can spread to the circuit board end, damaging components.
@STTC
@STTC Год назад
That’s the theory agreed upon but I have seen zero evidence of anyone’s circuitry being lost in a power cut or unexpected power loss. These heaters are far more robust than people think, it’s mostly myth. I prove it. 10 years experience and many many abrupt shut downs later, no lost circuit board. Cheers for the comment Larry

natural convection also plays a part, mount heater with a small tilt of 'hot end up' and the hot air around the burn chamber will convect out of the unit. not ideal in a perfect world but still a working theory

@@STTC Steve, does this mean you have changed your mind on this? I’m glad you left my post (in the pinned comment) even though I was perhaps a bit forceful with some of my comments. After designing experiments/tests/evaluations over a working lifetime - in both production engineering and education - it was really difficult to make experiments provide the data required, without interference by other uncontrolled factors. Even designing fair tests for school science experiments is far from straightforward. I remember one very expensive fiasco, where my initial laboratory test results, of a new product on the market, prompted the company MD to immediately order a full scale works trial - which went disastrously wrong - simply because the quarry supplied clay from a different stockpile. That was back in 1975ish. I warned against rushing into any large scale trial, but was obviously over-ruled by the Boss. At least the cost of the subsequent mess was clearly down to him.

I'm a bit confused.... the issue with a power cut is that there is no air flowing over the motor - meaning after a while you'll cook the electronics on the board which will likely over heat without airflow. Same reason that whey you switch them off intentionally they go through a cool down cycle. So far, you've been lucky. I'm not sure anyone expects anything dramatic to immediately happen. This doesnt happen when a battery is connected because the systems detect low battery voltage and power down before the battery is flat.
@STTC

Cheers for commenting but have you ever seen this happen? ever? any actual experience or is this the stuff of legend? I think it’s complete nonsense to be honest, nobody has shown me any evidence that this has ever happened and i can’t remember the last time we had a power cut. forget about batteries brother, waste of money, a new heater is far cheaper than a battery decent enough to last a few winters.
