Thank you. Yeah, DPF screen helpful. I’ve had no issues and I’m up to 3600 km now. I’d be interested to hear from anyone who just does school runs or inner city driving.
Agreed. Isuzu do a similar thing. The other day ours started a burn just before we got home. I was in no rush so I detoured out the road for 10 mins and done. Knowledge is power.
Worth noting a lot of the earlier models don’t have this screen. But I believe it can be added with software. I find ours will do a burn around town as long as it’s fairly smooth driving. Ours completed one in 10 mins the other day. It’s worth noting too if it doesn’t complete the burn you can still turn the car off. As long as it doesn’t get “full” you can keep doing little burns here and there is my understanding. Our previous car was a Pajero sport and we never had an issue with the DPF.
Good point. I can’t recall when the Australian legislation became law and mandated the Euro 5 standards. I think I read the first emission changes came in for model year 2004 Prior to that I don’t think it was required. Others may know better.
My 2021 Prado has around 1600k on the odometer. My DPF is working exactly as you describe. Kicks in about every 300k. So far I haven't needed the manual switch, but good to know it's there if needed. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the feedback. I’ve now done 16,000km in about 6 months with absolutely no DPF issues. Seems like Toyota have sorted out the past well described issues in this new model
Hi Peter. I just joined the Prado brotherhood. I got a VX. I still trying to teach it not to jump into 5 th and 6th so early. (apparently the tranny will learn over timer). I was worried about the engine labour at such low revs. I do love the car though. More usb ports yess and I think they have nailed it. Oh. also, the camera and display is not as crisp as I would have hoped from an $85K car but Im hoping to overlook that. Nice vid on the dpf. cheers mate.
Thanks. Mine is now 3 yrs old and I’m looking at moving it on soon. The prices have become a little bit crazy and apparently the new model due this year will be even more expensive
on a 2016 1GD prado you get a better burn by pulling over on a hard non flammable OUTDOOR surface when a burn starts. hold the revs up at about 2000 and let it do a high temperature burn. If I just keep driving at 80km/h or more or if its a cold day the DPF doesn't get hot enough to convert all the soot to ash. I don't have the current prado so rely on my ScanGauge to tell me the DPF loading.
Good comment. In my case I do a lot of highway / freeway driving and more often than not my DPF burns off whilst I’m doing motorway speed 100-110 km/hr. I do very few short stop/start trips so hopefully that helps. I also understand the DPF was changed for either the 2019 or 2020 model release to a new unit that is supposedly better than the older units that were installed and caused all the class action stuff to occur. I think your suggestion is a good idea for those models before the engine / DPF upgrade.
Yes agree. I think Toyota has actually replaced the old DPF with a new better engineered version plus added some software upgrades to the engine management computer as well. If you buy a 2020 build from June onwards I think the issues have been resolved
My 2018 himux just had the dpf removed and new one re fitted. I pulled up at the dealership and they had it revving at 4k rpm constantly for who knows how long at least 5 minutes and they said it was for the break in on the dpf. I wasent happy.
I've just got my Prado ..only 215km on the clock ..."DPF regeneration in process" has just come on today twice ... I have pulled up, placed in park and patiently waiting for the message to clear off the screen. It's at the lowest bar but seems to be taking forever ... Is this the right thing to do, the book said it is but surely being so new it shouldn't take so long? Cheers, Hank
Hi there. Yes absolutely. 50,000km driven and 18 months old, no issues. Burns off every 300km as regular as clockwork! I do mostly highway/ motorway long distance trips. Takes 15 mins at highway speed to regenerate.
I think pre-2015 Hilux didn’t have a DPF. 2015-2018 had the old DPF which had some of the issues about not regenerating when driven in urban environments. Changes made in 2018 (manual burn switch added) and new DPF and software in 2020 onwards builds
There has been a Toyota class action going through the courts about the poor quality DPFs on earlier versions which Toyota are contesting. They have offered to “make right” any affected vehicles though.
Also, may depend on which country you live in and the emissions standards laws in your country for diesel particulates as to whether you had to have a DPF fitted in the first place.
It does a DPF fitted and has had the software update about two years ago but no problems prior to that I also must note I don’t do many short trips most are about 100 km on a highway.
Next time you have your car serviced at Toyota, just ask them to enable DPF custom mode 2 with the graph. Had my 2020 Prado in a few weeks ago and they didn't charge me for it.
