"handles like a dining room table" easily the most accurate way I have ever heard someone describe Land Cruiser handling. Thank you for another fantastic video, I'm looking forward to seeing more of the troopy build.
Andrew, another thing that these engines (and many other CRD engines) suffer from is fine oil mist from the crankcase ventilation system mixing with hot exhaust gas, from the EGR system, and coking up inside the inlet manifold. The stock oil separator doesn't work very well, and what make matters worse is that the inlet is above the timing chain at the left front of the rocker rocker cover. The timing chain throws oil into the inlet to the separator. Arguably the best separator is a Provent 200 manufactured by MANN+Hummel in Germany. MANN is one of the worlds largest manufacturer of diesel engines (trucks, trains, ships, etc.) and they developed these because conventional oil separators can't remove very fine oil particles, invisible to the naked eye, which over time was leading to failure of the compressor wheels in the turbocharger. To trap these small oil particles the filter media must also consist of very small diameter fibres. Many oil separators (AKA catch cans) use stainless steel filters that can't trap small oil particles. BTW the chemical engineering department at the university in Perth did much of the R&D, for MANN+Hummel, on the filter used in the Provent 200 (they do a lot of research work on filtration for industry and MANN+Hummel is a large client). The earlier you stop the oil entering the air intake system the better. The coke builds up quite quickly and cleaning the inlet manifold is a relatively large and expensive job on the Toyota V8 diesel, something to be avoided.
Well done Andrew, you’ve just shown us all how to void every part of the driveline warranty. There’s a reason why the factory tunes them to be a slow turtle, good luck
I would argue with that. The best driving lights on the market are Fyrlyt Nemesis 9000. LED and HID lights can produce a lot of light, but their poor colour spectrum is a significant disadvantage and actually makes it harder to distinguish many animals that are at risk of collision. When we see objects, we are seeing the reflected light. When the driving light produces very little light of the wavelength corresponding with the colour of the object it is not reflected back for our eyes.
Sure +2gud4umenglez take the watts into account for wiring and alternator capacity, but at the end of the day they are the best driving lights, and no one will ever remove them because of the watts (unless they are stealing them). They are less expensive than quality led/hid combos, they are far superior for seeing animals and for overall vision especially when there is water (rain or fog), or dust in the air.
loved the kid in a toy store laugh..when i put in a bigger throttle body spacer and Airraid breather in my Jeep i had the same laugh...can't wait to see whats next.take care.
Did the throttle body spacer cause any under bonnet clearance issues? I ask because my gas converter (top of engine) sits a fraction higher than the standard throttle body assembly and already interferes with the under hood sound deadener lining.
SpectreOZ what year is your vehicle? mine is 03 wrangler tj..i dont have clearance issue per say,but if you push down on hood in area of throttle body it will touch..the torque of the engine doesn't seem to interfere either.
I have got to get one of them for my car, I didn't like the idea of remaps seeing I couldn't change when I wanted to go back to factory settings plus the fact that it would get wiped when I took the car in for a service, this looks like exactly what I need. Tailored to my own vehicle and with multiple options to use on the fly. My car already does 0-100 in just over 6 seconds so I can't wait to see how much faster it'll go with a chip. Thank you for this video!
Another great video Andrew, you never let us down. Awesome Land Cruiser. I hope, after all those upgrades, you (or PDP) put Amsoil motor oil, transmission, and differential fluids in it.
Andrew would you buy a second hand 4x4 that had been running with a performance chip in it. How do you feel about the added wear/pressure/ strain on the engine?
Haha i just love your reaction Andrew when you squeeze the throttle on! Had me laughing hard! I just picked up my brand new 79 series dual can GXL yesterday! I'm really considering putting a unichip in it once it's run in after about 10,000kms. Great video mate thanks for sharing!
That workshop (backdrop) looked familiar... LOL Well done Andrew we can well understand the "kid in a sweet shop" reaction to the improved grunt factor under that there bonnet! :D
It is a nice dining room table. I almost wish there was a way to introduce you to Mighty Car Mods and their mates at Haltech in Australia. I think I would love a Unichip -vs- Haltech video from MCM.
great video. As always full of lots of information. Have always been a bit sceptical of these "CHIPS" have heard bad reports but from what i saw looks like its worth the cost.
I had experience with UNICHIP 15 years ago. In my situation, the Melbourne re-seller "APS" made it too lean and it destroyed my engine while driving late at night. So have you kept your New Vehicle Warranty with this product Andrew?
Great videos, your reaction is priceless. Just wondering with some of the media reports around the DPF filters on some makes and models if you can comment on you experience with the care and maintenance of the DPF fitted to the 70 Series, given you've been living with it for a while now. Particularly if you have noticed any issues since the performance upgrade?
What did all that cost you? Looking to upgrade my hilux to a 76 series soon and those are some of the same mods I was going to look at. Also do you have a rough price for what the rear axle replacement was going to set you back?
Great Vid as always Andrew, the best way to start my day off! nice to see PDP getting some more good press. That's two RU-vid vids in the last few days they have been in! lol As always, keep up the good work!!
Nice Andrew, I can't wait to see it perform off road like on the Creb track. Weigh it down with gear and it will perform like stock programing and empty.
Do they use lift pumps in Australia? AirDog is one of the brands here in the US and their pumps do wonders for diesel engines by providing cleaner fuel with both a 2 micron filter and a separate water separator plus the advantage of a fuel pump to ease the work of the injection pump at getting the fuel to the desired psi.
Dont forget to do your clutch! Mine started slipping about 3 weeks after I remapped it when I was going up a hill, put a safari tuff clutch in and its sweet. I think the NPC is probably a better unit but a wee bit more expensive.
Same here mate. I had my ford ranger remapped in Perth and 2 days later the clutch started slipping. Although the DMF was on its way out so I opted for a HD Excedy SMF kit.. :D Happy days
do the fuel filters drain like one would think?? Our rigs we have to blow positive air pressure through the fuel tank vent to ensure no there's no vacuum while draining fuel filter or else we end up with water/sludge/air problem being introduced.
The smile on your dial after, shows just how worth it a package like that is to an overlanding vehicle. My old bus (80 series landcruiser) doesn't have any of the modcon's like these troopies but does the job for me. On a side note, does your troopy have any issues in relation to soot from tailpipe? I noticed Berrima Diesel down on the East Coast of Australia has been stating the DPF systems in the new toyota's haven't been very efficient in how they are suppose to function. Cheers.
Love the modification Andrew, now you just have to pray you don't get stuck behind a slow coach like me driving land rovers with 200 and 300tdis. Shouldn't have to worry for a while though, im over in Brisbane. Any plans to come over this way in the future? Love the Channel mate
Great vid once again ,hate to know what the interior of the Trooper must look like ( par with a Quantum Taxi I guess ) as my 79 twin cab for the price is the MOST basic interior I have ever seen , if you want your friends to hate you take them for a spin on a rough sand road while sitting on the rear bench seat !!!!!
Thank you for sharing this video with us, unichip is AMAZING BUT is it worth it to buy it and install it by yourself? not everyone can send a car to Australia for tuning, and it will be save for the engine as how they fixed it in your car?
Nice. .. explanation Mate, Hope their the top of the class quality chips.. Now plz take it to a long trip (Safari) and give us some feedback on the engine performance. ..
Awesome build videos so far! Perhaps some fender flares for the rear when you widen the axle? Just looks a bit visually odd, especially from the angle in your final shot.
G’Day Andrew, awesome videos, did you end up doing the clutch on this troop? Will be doing this soon and just interested in the path you went down for this build. Cheers!
Please forgive my ignorance, but when it comes to chips, what is the penalty? I understand how these chips can give you more power, economy, etc; but why doesn't the engine come with this tune from the factory? Does the chip decrease the life of the engine? Thank you!
Manufacturers commonly map the ECU in this order: Best emissions, then best economy, then best reliability. They make one map to cater for all markets, all fuel qualities, all altitudes in all countries. So they set a general map that everyone can use safely and reliably. So what we do is tell the map about our truck, our fuel, our conditions and our specific engine. And we have remapped it for best performance, best reliability, best economy and best emissions. (to put it simply) There is no reliability degrade because the engine is still under-tuned and Unichip has safeguards built into it. It cannot over-fuel! Ever. And this is the main reliability issue concerning diesel engines.
My Landcruiser VDJ79 is not fitted with factory difflocks like yours. It is my understanding that the difflocks also have breathers that need to be extended like the axles, gearbox and transfer case.
People complain about the new diesels because of how complicated and touchy they are with bad fuel. The upside? Add a chip and almost double your power. The american pickup diesel scene has its own niche now with trucks making 1000ftlbs of torque from a few bolt ons. Multiple magazines in the grocery store, multiple forms of racing and a huge aftermarket. It's keeping the diesel market alive with the turbo gas options available on new trucks. Enjoy the new power
All engines are different yet they all get the exact same tune loaded in from factory. It’s like a generic remap is absolutely fine but a engine specific remap will possibly be 5-10 killawatts better.
I am glad you found a brand new troopcarrier and I can't wait to see the project finished and see your new adventures. I have one question. My 1.5 dCi engine from Renault-Nissan group went up from 110HP to 128 HP after visiting the local chip specialists. The torque output is somewhere around 280 Nm. Why does a 4.5 liter common rail turbo diesel output only 150 HP stock and only around 400 Nm. That is a 2.0l turbo diesel performance. I suppose there is a logic behind this and I am curious to understand it. Keep up the good work! P.S. I am a yearly contributor to your website. :)
This is not satisfying. Any diesel engine is reliable as long as you mantain it accordingly and exploit it normal... Common rail engines are quite sensitive to low quality fuel.
reliabiltly very tough conditions in australia most brands are getting 200.000km if you maintain them the landcruisers are getting 300 without any maintenence designed more for the mining and agriculture market no other brands are competing talking of the new cars of course theres plenty of others such as the nissan patrol that were quite good but all other brands went for the consumer market not industrial
well yes any engine is reliable if properly maintained, why don't we just stick a 800 bhp Ferrari v12 in it? i mean after all if it's properly maintained it will last for ever. The low stress landcuiser v8 needs little to no maintenance to be reliable, which means it will never let you down. it's intrinsically reliable rather than reliable through maintenance.
The Kaizen culture in Toyota comes through their products. I lifted my 2015 4Runner and on the lift next to my SUV was a huge Dodge Mega Ram pickup and the 4x4 shop pointed out how much thicker the toyota front axles are. I agree they are over engineered to take a lot of abuse.
I thought you were still in Africa ? Looks like you have moved here to Oz. I'm always the last to know. :) Welcome abroad. I see Travis and crew from PDP are becoming quite the RU-vid stars. You'll have pass on my greeting to Ronny Dhal via Travis :)
That Lambo might perform as good or better than a Veyron, but a Veyron was designed to run on less than optimal African gas and drive on African roads where the speed limit is unlimited. A tune won't turn a Tshirt into a tuxedo but it can make the Tshirt fit you. Understand that and tunes will greatly increase your vehicle enjoyment.
The "idle up" button holds rpm at 1200rpm until the car warms up. Couldn't you change the function of this to hold a higher idle all the time and use this for the winch function? Also what is the cost of the Unichip installed?
plug and play, if something happens take it out and no one would be able to tell it was installed unlike a remap of the ecu and its a myth that accessories void warranty, unless it can be proved that whatever you put on was the cause of the damage.
