Dieting is Making You Fatter? - Body Fat Set Point Change Theory

While energy balance seems simple, it is made up of many complicated components. After working with thousands of people in my life, I have seen how improper dieting actually leads to people putting on more body fat over time, even though they spend the majority of their life dieting. The fad/yoyo dieting consistently caused people to gain more body fat over the course of their life. Seeking answers, I dug deep into the research and found things that blew my mind, especially regarding adipose tissue adaptations to dieting and body fat setpoint. Specifically, that you could actually increase your number of fat cells in your body in a short period of time, given the right circumstances. in this video I discuss my theory on body fat setpoint and why dieting makes some people fatter.

LAYNE DOES IT AGAIN!!! These series just get better and better!! So glad you're doing this one Layne!! Keep it coming!! Can i plz plz plz beg you to do one episode in relation to this and an obese person who loses weight.......i.e. a 330lb male/female going to 200lbs or so, who also builds some muscle mass, then what happens, would his leptin signals keep pushing for more food till he returns to 330lbs, like...are you going to be forever hungry battling to maintain 200lbs??
@donaldellis1460

You just described me to the T! I was 320, went down to 209 and now I am back to 330.

Donald Ellis this means u didnt develop good habits on the way down. I was 330 went down to 210, and now floating around 220-230, but i am going to be 180-190 even if it kills me!!

I would definitely like to see this as well. Former football player who needed to weigh 50+ pound more out of necessity. My body just does NOT want to get below about 20% BF. A lot of former lineman who are eating right and on paper should have a negative energy balance that I played with have the same problem. I’ve gotten to 15% before but it was basically like I was in the final stages of a 6 month prep to get there.
@yazctr
@yazctr 6 лет назад
this sounds exactly like me, at a theoretically calculated 19-21% is where my body starts fighting me, cravings go mental, appetite just goes thru the roof. I literally start dreaming about food! its mad!! Really annoying tho, cozi still have a belly and virtually no visible muscle definition in my upperbody yet, I know around the 200lb mark (im 5ft 10) i should start to see some definition and then that should push me to go the whole hog for the last 10-15lbs.

“If you’ve ever had an eating disorder it whacks out your brain...” Indeed it does and the effect persists for far longer than physiologically makes sense. Still struggling with this after having 2 children, gaining plenty of weight and “healing” my body.

So the body adapts and plans for the next time you are “starving” to be better equipped to keep you from dying. That’s mind blowing! From a scientific standpoint. But also disappointed as to why we can’t lose weight. But knowing this now I can also plan for my body’s adaptation. If I asked Greg, he’d just tell me to buy his cookbook.

what are your thoughts on being in a 200-300 cal daily deficit and then doing one fairly giant cheat meals a week. would that sort of recalibrate the metabolic rate and the leptin levels? I feel perfectly comfortable in a 200-300 cal daily deficit knowing I have a tasty meal waiting for me. from my personal and current anecdotal evidence I've noticed that I don't have to keep dropping calories and my body still feels comfortable and maintains a level of body fat that I would consider to be below my set point. what are your thoughts?

Wow, I'm really looking forward to this series! I'm scared to eat a big meal right now until I hear more. A couple questions I hope you can address: How long was the open feeding period where the number of fat cells increased? Are we talking a meal or two or several days of straight binge eating to before this effect is triggered? Are certain types of intermittent fasting schedules at risk of this? Squeezing your calories into certain sized windows sounds in theory like a "short term flux of energy across the fat cell".
