This week I’ll be reviewing Kalel’s recent What I Ate Today. Kalel is a bit of an enigma in the RU-vid world. She’s known for frequently deleting her content before re-branding and starting up a whole new channel. Her past channels have covered beauty tips, cosplay costumes, lifestyle/advice videos, DIY fashion & craft. Back in 2016, she re-branded again and now her channel is simply called Kalel. She doesn’t post very consistently, but when she has in the past she would talk a lot about her vegan diet and give some lifestyle advice. She’s also described as an animal activist and has two beautiful cats at home. One interesting bit of new information is that about one year ago, she stopped following a vegan diet and began introducing animal products into her diet. So before, she fully pulls everything down and rebrands her channel again, I thought we’d review this video and learn a bit more about Kalel.
In this video we explore: detox teas, transitioning from a vegan diet to incorporating animal products & nutrient deficiencies.
What I Like About Kalel’s Diet:
Her Honesty & Openness
Her meals are simple and balanced
What I Think Kalel Can Improve On:
Ditch the tea propaganda & misinformation
Get in enough calories
Her language around weight and beauty
I like that Kalel is brutally honest with her viewers, and seems to really appreciate the many followers in her life. At the same time, with that many followers, I think she’s got a long way to go when it comes to being a positive role model for the many young girls that follow her. In her next videos, I hope she thinks twice about some of the language she uses when discussing her weight and does a background check on a few nutrition claims before sharing them with her audience.
I hope you guys enjoyed this video! If you did, be sure to give this video a big thumbs up. If you’ve got questions or want me to review a RU-vidr, leave me a comment below, subscribe to the channel, and I’ll see you next time on Abbey’s Kitchen!

I wish people would stop commenting on someone when they clearly don't watch her. All of these comments are really toxic telling her that they hope she 'changes" and can "break" whatever is going on...she has diagnosed mental disorders including a personality disorder/OCD. It heavily affects her diet and view of herself but it is not something that she can "break" or "change". Therapy - which she receives regularly - can help but she will likely suffer with the disorder the majority of her life. And she can enjoy life with her disorder, she is not miserable. She just does things differently and thinks differently and that's okay

I’ve been successfully vegan for 4 years now. I’ve actually managed to improve my health as a vegan compared to when I still ate meat and other animal products. However, these “influencers” like Kalel make the entire vegan movement look bad. They starve themselves and become deficient in basically everything, don’t feel well as a result and then resort to animal products again and announcing to their audience that the vegan diet isn’t practical or good for you. It’s simple. Eat when you’re hungry, eat variety, don’t restrict. Your body knows what it needs. If you’re hungry all the time, there’s a reason.

Abbey finding your videos has been a true blessing. I've never had someone talk about food the way you do. I didn't even realise my mind was so fogged with all this diet culture. You've really set me on the right path with my health and to seek some professional advice. I've never had to worry about what I ate because I was always so thin as a teenager, but the junk food really caught up with me, add to that some stress from work and my health has taken a nosedive in the last 2 years. I felt overwhelmed with how to get back to feeling healthy (do i go back to being vegan, do I do keto, should I stop eating so much?) but now I feel so calm and confident in eating a good quanitity of healthy whole foods! Please do a video on Raw Alignment/Alyse Parker. She used to be raw vegan and starved herself to the point where she was malnourished and deficient. She then went full on carnivore. She still has her old "What I eat in a Day Raw Vegan" videos up. It'd be nice to see a comparison of both from an actual RD, even though she starves and restricts herself on both. *Edit* you should also check out her colonic experience video. It's so sad to know that she is still promoting disordered eating behaviours but I'm so glad Abby is here to spread some good, real info. I hope Kalel watches this video and realizes how much her mindset and eating habits can affect her and those who follow her... Yes but I was 15/16 and very easy to manipulate. I had no knowledge about nutrition, just like any other teenager. Of course it wasnt her fault 100% but she was part of the problem. We have to acknowledge that influencers nowadays have a huge power over their audience and they can manipulate people into thinking they need to live one way or the other. I don't think it was my fault that I watched her videos, I didn't know what I was doing, I was too young to understand what healthy eating actually means and what restricting looked like. When someone puts out a video for the world to see, it doesnt matter the intention behind it (Kalel probably didnt mean any harm), its still going to have an effect over the audience so people have to be aware of this, research and not just claim facts because it seems to work. Yes her diet made her lose weight but it also damaged her health and no one knew...
@luluvbrito
@luluvbrito 4 года назад
One of the comments here says Kalel used to say never to eat more than half your meal! Imagine what that can do to a teenager's mind, or even a worse, a child's. She cant just say that, girls hear that and see her with her beautiful body and they are probably gonna want to be like her. Having that mindset around food is super restrictive and can definately lead to anorexia or binge eating (after restricting).

@@luluvbrito and Kalel responded to that comment and said she never said that. Regardless, I will never understand how someone can give such power to a random person's random comment. But they said they hadn’t had it in a couple months of years and I grew up in the South, many generations removed from any sort non-“standard” American traditions so I’d never had it at all. Plus we’re in our mid-twenties, so when I say “convince” I don’t mean it in a pressuring, overbearing sort of way. More in a well-meaning way. But between both of their families, we at a LOT of traditional Caribbean food and ya girl is NOT used to that at all so I figured, “why not”. But then we didn’t know we were gonna be leaving the next day so it was just a mess all around lol.

Hey Abby, fellow RD here. I have a hard time understanding why nutrition professionals harp on about how vegan diets need to be "well planned" and require "education" in order to be nutritionally adequate. This is true for ALL diets. We have an epidemic of nutrition-caused diseases that are overwhelming our healthcare systems because omnivorous diets are largely not well-planned and are nutritionally inadequate. Most people seeking the consult of a dietitian are not vegan/vegetarian. Most people coming in for care for their heart disease, diabetes, GI cancers are not vegan/vegetarian. I think that promoting the idea that omnivorous diets are safer by nature because they "cover all of the bases" is not only demonstrably false, but really does a disservice to the public. ALL diets can be dangerous and lead to health problems and I would argue that those issues seen in people on lazy omnivorous diets are more damaging and serious than those seen with people on lazy vegan diets.

When cutting out key parts of a diet, you do need the education on how to replace them with alternatives

Her older vegan videos were low in protein if I recall correctly. It's a common pattern with ex-vegans. I eat tofu, wheat protein and/or tofu based foods daily and I find it covers more of the hard to get nutrients on a vegan diet: calcium, zinc, protein.

I am vegan and sometimes I will have a vegan kitchener bun for lunch :/ but the difference is maybe that I do not really snack. I eat what I like and nothing more at meal times. If you want to lose weight just eat normal portions of what you like. You wont crave anything because you know you can eat anything. I always start my day with a fruit smoothie and I put oats and seeds in it. I always have a large breakfast of 700 or so calories as I have a physical job. Then I will have what I like for lunch (a normal portion). If it is a donut then it is a donut and even if it were pizza I will stop when full. Mindful eat works!!!! But trust me when you don't restrict anything you like you wont crave it, you will opt for healthy options naturally. I love this tomato soup at plant 4. I get a chai with it and omg I am in heaven.

Glad her meals are more complete, but I want more snacks. I would love to stop making physical appearance = a healthy outlook on food/diet. Also when people say how "filling" a meal is because of how many hours they haven't eaten is a little weird.
@maddyG7414
@maddyG7414 5 лет назад
Wait why is that weird? I'm happy if I'm full for hours from a satisfying meal. I'm busy so I don't have time to snack and I feel like it's important to eat once you're hungry again.
@jacethekingslayer
@jacethekingslayer 5 лет назад
@@maddyG7414 It's going to vary for people--some people might find snacking really useful, while others might not feel that it's necessary. It's also going to be affected by diet. Someone who eats a lot of fats and proteins might not become hungry again as quickly as someone who eats more carbs. However, I think @Liz D. is talking about people who use hours between meals as a value system. This is really prominent in online fasting communities, where it can become a competition when comparing the length of fasting windows. In the context of the video, I find it really hard to believe that Kalel's rice bowl kept her full for 6hrs, to the extent that she claimed that she didn't even actually need a snack.

@lizd.2343
@lizd.2343 5 лет назад
@@maddyG7414 Not really weird, but worries me the heavy emphasis placed on amount of time not eating after a filling meal. Jace Rosenthal in the comments explained it better than me.The feeling that you shouldn't eat because you ate a "filling" meal, despite feeling hungry. Placing a value system on that amount of time. About a third of the people I know have tried water cleanses, juice cleanses, extreme calorie restricting or intermittent fasting, and hours/days between eating equals better in that mentality. I also see this behavior a lot on the internet as well. All for the first few days would be hungry and craving food for the days or 12+ hrs they didn't eat, then after a week or so say they weren't hungry anymore. Sometimes intermittent fasting or skipping a meal or no snacking really works with someone's lifestyle and hungry cues, but I don't think it should be encouraged as the norm.

I feel like she hasn't really changed anything in her diet apart from adding animal products. The reason veganism didn't work for her is that she was legit not eating properly and she's doing it now. Eating a big thing of lettuce with like two pieces of chicken isn't a full meal. And just like when she was vegan, she falls into the gimmicky teas and stuff instead of just focusing on nutritious whole foods that will give her what her body needs/

The American Egg Board is a promotional marketing board appointed by the U.S. government whose mission is to “increase demand for egg and egg products on behalf of U.S. egg producers.” If an individual egg company wants to run an ad campaign, they can say pretty much whatever they want. But if an egg corporation wants to dip into the 10 million dollars the American Egg Board sets aside for advertising every year, because the board is overseen by the federal government, corporations are not allowed to lie with those funds. This leads to quite revealing exchanges between egg corporations that want to use that money and the USDA on what egg companies can and cannot say about eggs. Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act I was able to get my hands on some of those emails. Of course a lot of what I got were pages with nearly all of the text blacked out (you can see these in my video, Who Says Eggs Aren’t Healthy or Safe?). But I did find some illuminating correspondence. For example, one email shows an egg company trying to put out a brochure on healthy snacking for kids. But because of existing laws against false and misleading advertising, the head of the USDA’s poultry research and promotion programs reminds the company that eggs or egg products cannot be couched as being healthy or nutritious. “The words nutritious and healthy carry certain connotations, and because eggs have the amount of cholesterol they do, plus the fact that they’re not low in fat, [the words healthy and nutritious] are problematic.” This is the United States Department of Agriculture saying this! However, the USDA official helpfully suggests, “I believe you can say something that’s just as strong if not stronger, that is ‘naturally nutrient-dense.’” Why can we say eggs are nutrient-dense but not nutritious? Because there’s no legal definition of nutrient-dense. We can say Twinkies and Coca Cola are nutrient dense, but legally, we can’t say something is nutritious unless it’s actually… nutritious. For example, the egg industry wanted to run an ad calling eggs a nutritional powerhouse that aids in weight loss. The USDA had to remind the industry that they can’t portray eggs as a diet food because of the fat and cholesterol content. In fact, eggs have nearly twice the calories of anything that can be called “low-calorie.” “Nutritional powerhouse” can’t be used either. Fine, the industry said, they’ll move to plan B, and headline the ad “Egg-ceptional Nutrition.” They couldn’t say that either because, again, given the saturated fat and cholesterol you can’t legally call eggs nutritious. So the headline ended up as, “Find true satisfaction,” and instead of weight loss they had to go with “can reduce hunger.” The USDA congratulated them on their cleverness. Yes, a food that when eaten can reduce hunger-what a concept! They can’t even say eggs are “relatively” low in calories. Can’t say eggs are low in saturated fat-they’re not. Can’t say they’re relatively low in fat, they’re not. Can’t even call them a rich source of protein, because, according to the USDA, they’re not. It’s illegal to advertise that eggs pack a nutritional wallop, or that they have a high nutritional content. Eggs have so much cholesterol, we can’t even say they “contribute nutritionally.” Can’t say eggs are “healthful,” certainly can’t say they’re “healthy.” Can’t even say eggs contribute “healthful components.” Since we can’t say eggs are a healthy start to the day, the USDA suggests a “satisfying start.” Egg corporations can’t call eggs a healthy ingredient, but they can call eggs a “recognizable” ingredient. Can’t truthfully say eggs are good for us, either. By law, according to the USDA, the egg industry “needs to steer clear of words like ‘healthy’ or ‘nutritious.’” For a food to be labeled “healthy” under FDA rules, it has to be low in saturated fat (eggs fail that criteria) and have less than 90mg of cholesterol per serving (even half an egg fails that test). For the same reason we can’t tout ice cream for strong bones, we can’t say eggs are healthy because they exceed the threshold for cholesterol. Egg corporations aren’t even allowed to say things like “Eggs are an important part of a well balanced, healthy diet” on an egg carton because it would be considered misleading according to the USDA’s National Egg Supervisor, since eggs contain significant amounts of fat and cholesterol and therefore can contribute to the leading killer in the United States, heart disease. The industry can’t afford to tell the truth about the eggs, or even the hens that lay them. The industry crams five to ten birds in cages the size of a file cabinet their whole lives, but when providing footage to the media, the American Egg Board instructs, “do not show multiple birds in cages-they look too crowded and open us up to activist criticism.” Not only is the industry barred from saying eggs are healthy, they can’t even refer to eggs as safe because more than a hundred thousand Americans are food poisoned by Salmonella from eggs every year. The egg board’s response to this egg-borne epidemic is that Salmonella is a naturally occurring bacterium. An internal egg industry memo didn’t think that should necessarily be the key message, fearing that “it may be counterproductive by implying there is no avoiding Salmonella in eggs aside from avoiding eggs altogether.” The food poisoning risk is why the American Egg Board can’t even mention anything but eggs cooked hard and dry. No soft-boiled, no over-easy, no sunny-side up-because of the Salmonella risk. The American Egg Board’s own research showed that the sunny-side up cooking method should be considered “unsafe.” In light of bird flu viruses, both the white and yolk must be cooked firm. The VP of marketing for the Egg Board complained to the USDA saying they’d “really like to not have to dictate that the yolks are firm,” and cites a Washington Post article saying runny yolks may be safe for everyone except pregnant women, infants, elderly, or those with chronic disease. It turns out it was a misquote-eggs can’t be considered safe for anyone. Instead of safe, they can call eggs “fresh,” the USDA marketing service helpfully suggests. But they can’t call eggs safe, and they can’t say eggs are “safe to eat.” They can’t even mention safety at all. Wait a second, not only can eggs not be called healthy they can’t even be called safe? Says who? Says the United States Department of Agriculture. NUTRITIONFACTS.ORG
