At least Pam is straightforward with what she eats and how she exercises to have that body. I expected her to be restrictive, but I'd rather know the truth than hear one more 'I eat whatever I want' from an influencer.

I live in Germany and I’m pretty sure there were no misunderstandings in translation. She really meant that it’s “not that hard”. She probably didn’t mean to offend anyone, I think she meant for it to sound encouraging, like “it’s not hard so you can do it too!”. In general, Germans are not as sensitive and not as easily offended as Americans (obviously it’s individual but overall…). When I first started watching American RU-vidrs, I was surprised by all the trigger warnings and super sensitive language. German RU-vidrs don’t really pay attention to that. Not because we want to be mean, it’s just a cultural difference.

sorry to dissapoint, I am German, this is the way we speak. "It's not that hard" is a common phrase over here and will be received as an encouraging one. @MrsLPAmy 2 года назад
To be honest, the way Pamela speaks is really typical for us Germans and since Pamela has a pretty good level of English - you can hear it in her stories - this was probably translated completely like she wanted to. Some people think intuitive eating is just eating when your hungry and stopping when you’re full. Which that’s part of it, but it’s also honoring your cravings, and not demonizing foods.
@AbbeysKitchen
@AbbeysKitchen 3 года назад
Exactly!
@sarahsidney1988
@sarahsidney1988 3 года назад
Honoring your cravings can be a slippery slope though... Especially in the food environment we live in nowadays where so many foods are engineered to be addictive. Past studies have even shown that our gut microbiome can determine what cravings we are likely to have. Eating lots of healthy foods feeds diffetent bacteria in our gut and makes it more likely for us to crave healthy foods. On the other hand, the more unhealthy foods we eat, the more in turn we will have cravings for these foods.
@elisesimone022
@elisesimone022 3 года назад
@@sarahsidney1988 I don’t mean honoring binging or eating too much of one thing. But if I’m craving toast for breakfast instead of a protein smoothie ima eat toast. Or if I want pasta for dinner w a salad. Or if I want chips. I don’t condone eating too much one anything, because balance is still important. But I think people read too much into cravings. Eat the piece of chocolate and honor your body when it says it’s done. Hope that makes sense? ❤️
@dianalove539
@dianalove539 3 года назад
@@elisesimone022 It's a struggle for a lot of people to find that "balance" so rules help people have that balance that you might naturally have. You cant expect an obese person to fully grasp these rules of "moderation" or "eating when your hungry" cause that can be difficult to spot, and not go over. Literally, intuitive eating is practically impossible for most people as it's in your BIOLOGY to eat more food when it's highly pleasurable, defeating the purpose of intuitive eating. Intuitive eating and food freedom do not go in hand for me. Food "freedom" is more like food imprisonment for me if I just ate whatever I wanted... doesn't work with someone with binge eating disorder. Secondly, Having food rules first is a great first step to lead to mindfully eating in people when they're ready so you guys have to stop demonizing this essential process to what you all call "food freedom". Especially concerning people who feel BAD after eating certain foods, (so they then cut it out if they are sensible) its like you guys forget that a part of intuitive eating is listening to your body and eating what FEELS right and good for it... some people don't have good responses to sugar. I know I don't. I get diahrea, physically nauseous, and sick each time I eat it so I had to cut it out (sweets), it's not helping me live a good life.

Must be annoying having to sift through maple syrup recipes to get to ones that are actually sugar-free. Maple syrup IS sugar. And sure, it might not hurt someone who isn't diabetic to have maple syrup on their pancakes, but usually when something is listed "sugar free" it should mean it actually doesn't have added sugar of any kind in it, so that diabetics like yourself don't have to sift through what amounts to glorified BS to get the real thing you're after. And you'd think they'd add a label for fruit used as sweeteners - there are people who are allergic to things like banana, like yourself, but there are also folks allergic to any and all culinary fruits. I met someone like that once. This guy was allergic to culinary fruits (the sweet ones) specifically, but wasn't allergic to vegetables - not even the ones which were botanically fruits but didn't have the sweet aspect. And it would not have done him any good either to find a recipe that doesn't normally have fruit that has a fruit-as-sweetener listed. Seriously, recipes that have "stealth nutrition" should be labeled as such for that reason alone (including "stealth veggies" since some folks might be allergic to those or might have digestive intolerances specific to leaves such that the only "leafy green" they can consume without ever experiencing ill effects is broccoli due to it not actually being a leaf) - and so people with sensory issues can go into it eyes wide open and know whether or not that is personally a good workaround for sensory issues or not (sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, it depends).

@C I can’t speak for a European. But as an English-speaking North American (like abbey) this is well within our ability to pronounce. Does she need to intuitively know how to pronounce them? No. But if she is doing all this research on these individuals it seems she could have picked up their names.. sometimes in the clips she plays they even say their own name and she doesn’t say them right. I’m not even looking for a perfect pronunciation with no accent. Just an attempt. She does this in almost every video that it seems like an intentional way to degrade these individuals. Or at least pretend like she’s too aloof to know who they are. Just saying. It’s disrespectful. Like Nina Dobrev. She’s even a Canadian actress. Very famous. But even if she doesn’t know her, which I won’t blame her for. She pronounced her name as DobrOv. That’s not even how you would say it in English. It doesn’t make sense.

As an American who studied German in high school and college, I’m not going to give Abbey grief over the name Reif. There are a lot of German/Yiddish origin names that have the ‘ei’ and ‘ie’ combos that are pronounced opposite to what they should be “auf Deutsch”. There’s no rhyme or reason to it either. I stick with German pronunciation unless I’m told differently by the person. Heck the last name “Schroeder” in North America is a complete minefield when it comes to pronunciation. Yet to native German speakers only know one pronunciation, and trust me, we’re not using it here in North America.

I disagree that her body is "too lean" or in any way "unhealty" looking. If you follow her on Instagram you can see in her story (and in her YT videos as well) that her body doesn't look overtly fit or too defined. Yes, she has abs but her bodyfat % is not concerning looking imo. She used to look way leaner and really skinny a few months/years ago but said herself that she gained weight since and is much happier with her body now. But YEAH, I strongly agree that her approach on food is highly concerning and screams orthorexia.

I am your regular watcher and subscriber and I really like watching your videos. However, I didn't like this one and I think that it's somewhat misleading. This video contains huge amount negativity for Pamela, which is not nice. You are overstating that 'sugar is sugar', shaming her for using coconut sugar instead of white, missing the fact that Pamela herself in the app says the same thing - sugar is still sugar - and she very rarely uses any kind of it, and adds fruits like banana and dates instead. Counting her calorie intake just based on recipes is wrong. To know how many calories she's eating daily, you would need to follow her for quite some time to see that she is not eating only that, but she also snacks a lot on protein bars, fruits, smoothies, lentil chips etc. Stating that she's eating around 1300 kcal is very misleading. I've been following her for more than a year and I can say that her message on food is no more different than yours. Th difference is simply that she does not eat bread, protein powder, and is much more focused on sustainability. I could also say that she's sure not eating less or working out more compared to your dear Linda Sun (who I also love, no hate here), only the interpretation is different. Anyway, I hope that this comment finds you well. Greetings from Serbia :)

In fact, I think it's quite common here to frame the wording like that. It's not meant to say "this is absolutely not suitable for a healthy diet" nor "this is bad food, this is good", but rather that's her recommendation and everything else is also fine. After reading intuitive eating materials, you realize that intuitive eating is way more complicated than just -not tracking-, but i’m pretty sure most of them haven’t read anything about it lol. my theory is that a lot of them are so used to tracking that simply not doing so means that they are full, diet culture rejecting, intuitive eaters. we need to dispel the myth that intuitive eating is just eating without tracking, because it’s so much more than that, and can be so much more fun too! great video abbey :) 💕

@@arf6899 I think what i was trying to get across was “intuitive eating” as it is known, is actually a complex framework that involves both the bodies internal queues and intellectual knowledge about food to make the most satisfying and intuitive decisions about food, no diets, weight loss, wellness BS, etc. “Intuitive eating” is technically different from not tracking because you can not track your food but still have food rules (like pamela) which means you do not intuitively eat as the creators intended. Therefore, eating what you want and not tracking is still not intuitive eating if it is still restricted within diet culture and fat phobia. hopefully that’s helpful 👍 we also don’t know if pamela eats when she’s hungry and stops when she’s full

I am SO happy that you made this video about her! Being a german i think she’s the most infamous german Fitness Influencer and she triggers me to NO end! She’s said things like she can only eat as much as she does (2000-2200 kcal ?!?!) because she works out TWO HOURS/DAY so if you want to eat “that much” it’s okay if you workout every single day, or says she eats intuitively but can’t have a coke or a single scoop of ice cream at events because it doesn’t fit her diet???? I can’t even look at her without getting angry 🤡

I'm so glad for your channel. I recently slipped back into my ED habits and it triggered my POTS symptoms soooo bad. I had this bright idea to count macros and calories yet again....then I ended up with heart palpitations, shakiness, cold limbs, anxiety, vertigo, and insomnia. Couldn't go to work a couple of times. Oh also lost my period AGAIN I started eating more and got rid of the counting app. My symptoms are slowly improving. It's so hard to give myself permission to eat enough because everyone online in the diet culture scene brags about how little they eat.. So your channel is definitely refreshing and necessary.

I’m just gonna say that I love Pam and she has changed my life is so many ways. I love her workout routines and I love her app and the food. I don’t eat as clean as her, so I usually combine her recipes with my own but they had helped me so much to get creative in the kitchen and they helped me to eat healthier as well. So I must say that I don’t agree with Abby this time :( Pam is just awesome. I wouldn’t recommend to eat strictly like her because we need to remember that her work is literally to look good and have an almost “perfect” figure, but overall, the recipes are tasty, easy and healthy. You guys should give it a try

Ah, now I remember why I stopped following Pamela Reif on Instagram and deleted her app. I just think her values and mine did not align. So, I just stopped her influence on my life. But when she is happy with her lifestyle and some of her followers are too, then great and I am happy she is able to help some people. But her more limited food choices weren’t just my cup of tea as that really triggered my ED thoughts and I had been in a healthy and recovered mindset back then. So be careful whom you follow. If they trigger you, they are probably not the best influencer for you.

You have to keep in mind that (even organic) food is A LOT cheaper in Germany/ Europe (where Pam is from) than in the US . Thats sth you have to consider when using the APP. E.g. a pack of strawberrys (not organic) might cost 4- 5 $ in the US... u can get organic strawberries in Germany for 3€ - even with the exchange rate that still means 4$ max for organic strawberries in Germany compared to regular US strawberries for 5$

She never talks about period or being or her period even though she talks about more "delicate" things such as farts, bloating, poop and so my guess is she does not menstruate anymore. I remember her what I eat in a day insta stories and one day she ate two protein balls, a protein bar and some oatmeal (because she was busy and did not have the time) while working out for one hour that day. And many days of hers looked like that which made me question everything she promotes

I remember a live Q&A she did on Instagram where she was answering most questions, then a loooot of questions about workouts on your period came out and she ignored every single one of them. I may be wrong but I even saw her brother pointing out questions for her to read and at some point she said "I don't want to answer that" and she looked annoyed. I mean, if she was a super private person about pooping and bloating and bowel issues I would've understood, but it seems like she deliberately does not talk about periods and I feel it's a huge problem with women who workout! It's important for young women to know when to rest and she just makes you feel guilty for not working out FIVE times a week (and sometimes she does more)! On the other hand I really like Maddie Lymburner's approach, she's super honest about periods and says it's ok to rest if you have cramps and many other reasonable things!

Had to stop watching, this lady seems very judgmental. To the comments, okay fair points about her assistants and cooks, but she's the one who was independent and dynamic enough to make the kind of money to afford those assistants and cooks. I work a full time, over time paying job and wow! Pam lights my life right up, I feel so alive and full of energy with her routines. Her sweet potatoe peanut butter chicken recipe is unbelievable. Delicious, and sweet potatoe nutrients are endless. She's a wonderful, needed woman in this world and I'd hate to think other people would be intimidated by that, especially if it's based off of working so much. I work a lot, still find time to do her workouts and go to the grocery store & get these recipe ingredients. Hats off to the people with kids who do the same, and yes I've seen it done. Maybe not always, but people have their times. And her meals? They take 45 mins at the most. The recipe I mentioned takes 20. Pam may say staying fit is not that hard, its cause it's not that hard to her. The lady does her research. She reads all about fitness, it's mindset. It can be 'not that hard' with proper time management skills and motivation

I have been a big fan of Pams and did her workouts every day for a solid year- but noticing the things she eats and posts in her every day story are quite triggering. She legit NEVER eats a normal slice of cake or anything she considers "bad" and even on holidays she looks out for restaurants with "clean " options and rather just eats her own products. I don't think that's a very healthy message to send and I stopped buying her cookbooks and deleted her app for that reason. Right now she is in Ibiza and doesn't even try anything from another culture and just sticks to salads and her products. I don't know, it did disappoint me a lot since she is mostly advertising herself as a "foodie". I also bought 1 of her cookbook and if you're not a huge porridge fan wouldn't recommend it. There is barely anything else in there😅

Ikr. I do her workouts when I want a quick and easy body weight routine. However, her stance on food is a big no no for me. It just screams orthorexia, and reminds me of my ultra restrictive days. Like I remember her refusing a piece of cake for her lingere launch party because she wasn't 'allowed'. If your diet is so consuming that you can't even relax and enjoy a treat during a celebration, then I think its time to reconsider the diet. But I do get where she's coming from. This is her brand, her liveleyhood. Being restrictive is likely the only way she believes she can keep her body and her buisness.

A little weigh-in from a German native speaker (I'm from Austria) regarding the language: There is absolutely no way that she didn't know how to word it better. Most German speakers in my age (33) and younger are very well-versed with English as a second language (except if they have had very little education and live a very rural life). And the sentence of "having a flat tummy and toned thighs not being that hard" would also be an incredibly tone-deaf and offensive and simply f*ing bad writing in German as well. The only difference is that in the German-speaking region fatphobia and a "slim lifestyle" are going much stronger than in the US. She wouldn't even necessarily have needed an English native speaker for translation but simply someone who is better at writing copy to market her app.

Yeah but it’s sort of like how some people have a lot of trouble digesting lactose and decide to tell everyone that dairy is the worst thing to eat and not eating it will cure ailments from bloating to redness. When in reality everyone is different and what we perceive to help us feel better may just be specific to us or even a placebo effect from creating a plan to address an issue. I don’t have an issue with her deciding her body works better if she doesn’t drink water around meals, but when you charge money for people to give your advice on nutrition it should at least be reviewed and endorsed by a nutritionist. Her peers do this! Caroline Girvan has a nutritionist give her nutrition advice for her programs and Madfit worked with a nutritionist on her app.

@@caitiedidit i don’t think she forced people to believe this i think in the app she just said that it worked for her. i don’t think she’s saying “you’ll be bloated if you don’t do this”. i think she mostly made the app for recipes and the blog posts are second. her blog post are what she does and thinks about food, from what she said in her story on instagram.
