Hi everyone, welcome to Abbey's Kitchen! In today’s What I Eat In A Day RU-vidr review, I will be taking a look at John Glaude from the RU-vid Channel "Obese to Beast". John is a fitness and wellness RU-vidr who gained popularity by documenting his extreme weight loss (hence his clever RU-vid handle). A reminder that everything in this video is for entertainment purposes only and you should always seek the advice of a health care provider for your unique case.
So, let's meet John!

This was really fun to watch! Thanks for making it! A couple things! 1: wow, my hair changed more times than I am comfortable with 😂 2: I actually have not tracked macros in about 4 years now! I was weighing some of the things out (cookie butter) because I wasnt sure what a serving looked like! I think when I am filming a full day of eating I talk about portion sizes because I know people will ask! Personally I almost never weigh things out in “normal” life Hopefully that clears a few things up! Thanks again and I had a great time watching, even though I was nervous 😂

I agree. He's actually one of the best people in the diet/ fitness community, IMO. FWIW I think his workout & food choices are also some of the best. He's still a fairly big/ muscular guy who's working out hard so of course he's going to be eating a lot more calories than most of us females, but you can't really go wrong following his example as long as you scale it to your caloric needs/ tastes

Abbey Sharp If my goal was to be 500 lbs would you really support that? I feel you morally could not do that. I am definitely not against anyone wanting to be obese that is their right but I don’t think that is something to support. Also flagging some of his thoughts on obese people are wrong. Everyone has the power to eat healthy, but a good amount make excuse and simply choose not to eat healthy. Its not even so much as healthy but not overeating. You John does not take in account social status or mental health issues, which you are correct, but he focuses on those who are overweight to morbidly obese calling themselves confident and think being 400lbs is fine. Other than that I thought it was a good video!

@@hrshy491777 I don't think it's just about flagging this for those who are obese/morbidly obese, having a history of struggling with an ED, topics like for example obesity/morbid obesity as well as calorie counting/clean eating can be triggering for me, even though I'm not morbidly obese now, and even though I'm no longer restricting severely. Her flagging this for *her* viewers is just the responsible thing to do, she knows she has a lot of followers either with an ongoing ED or with a past of disordered eating.

I think John is absolutely one of the most sensitive weight loss influencers! Such a down to earth guy, very kind and accepting of everyone. He cares for people and wants them to experience happiness. As someone who’s lost a significant amount of weight myself, I appreciate his perspectives so much! I started becoming more active and eating primarily whole foods, coming from the premise of wanting to get into better cardiovascular health and weight loss just happened to be a side effect. I can say I’m happier now in some ways, and less happy in others. I still struggle with food addiction, so it’s important for me to say no to indulgences or track occasionally, because binging isn’t good for me mentally or physically. My unhappiness definitely comes from my own insecurities, but it’s greatly outweighed by the joy I experience from being able to tackle an intermediate hike or jog a mile easily. Thanks, John, for all you do!

Therealkiz 432 I take chopped strawberries (or whatever fruit you want to use) and do a light coating of sugar on the outside, to draw the water out. Then I throw that in a pot. Crush up the strawberries as they heat. Throw in some sugar, anywhere from .25 to .50 of the weight of fruit. Stir and let boil. Stir continuously until you can run your finger on back of the spoon and the gap doesn’t close back up. Put in a jar that has been heating up in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit, so that the jar doesn’t crack when you pour it in. I also add a little bit of lemon juice and cinnamon to mine.

They often have extra ingredients too. I have a reusable device that you can add any type of oil to. The top acts like a pump and adds pressure to the canister. It was about $8 and I’ve been using it for 6 years and can just add oil from my bulk purchases. I find it really helpful for when I’m baking breads, bagels, etc and just need a very thin layer. Definitely NOT a necessity, but a tool I enjoy. If I didn’t have it, I’d just go without vs. buying the disposable.

I actually think it’s more harmful to cover her. Everyone can easily see she has major issues. Her eating is a symptom of much larger issues. She lies so much you never really know what is accurate with her. Most importantly continually covering her creates a positive feedback loop that is a major contributor to her current health status. At the end of the day people watch her because they want to see the train wreck. More views, comments, likes, or dislikes all earn her income. It’s estimated she earns about 15k/mo. She’s trapped. She doesn’t really have a marketable skill that she can to at her current health status. I personally can’t imagine an ethical healthcare professional jumping on the ALR train at this point.
@Freaky0Nina
@Freaky0Nina 4 года назад
@@AbbeysKitchen I also don't think you should cover her. Believe me. It is not only herself, and the fact that your tips and analysis won't help her (she is beyond that point), and her very questionable persona. There is a whole *hate* culture surrounding her. The videos critizising her make more views than her own, and in the comment sections you will find people who fell into the Amberlynn Critique Rabbit Hole jumping on the opportunity to have someone to look down on. When people ask you for Amberlynn Reid content, they ask you to say what's already been said a million times, so they have new content, a new comment section, that allows them to feel a sense of community and superiority. In the end, a video on her will only have a positive effect on your and Amberlynn's ad revenue. And no one else.

I had a horrific binge eating disorder & lost 180 pounds over 4 years through diet & exercise , and I have successfully kept it off I don't think Abbey is well informed or very educated about people who were morbidly obese. I have to use items such as scales etc to assist me with knowing portions. Measuring food helps keep me accountable, I would experience great anxiety if I could not measure my food.Also, I cannot keep items like cookies, candy etc in my house. I agree with this. I like Abbey but for those of us who have been super morbidly obese we had to incorporate calorie counting plus weighing and measuring food in order to overcome disordered eating. I've lost 156 pounds through weight loss surgery, working with a dietitian and therapist and exercise. I am at a place now where I am better at listening to my body and can incorporate some parts of intuitive eating now but I still don't trust myself to not weigh and measure food. I eat on a toddler plate in order to maintain appropriate portion sizes. I will find or make healthier versions of the things I want in order to focus on the protein and calorie macros my dietitian recommends.

I lost 6st, and have kept it off for 2 years....but I have to count and measure every bite, and my main complaint is that I don't have any "wiggle room". Nah I know that internet comments rarely change minds but I wanted to share my story with you in case it does. I’ve always been a healthy, active, athletic size 6-8. I eat mostly plant based and work out 6 days a week. About 3 years ago I started gaining weight rapidly. Like 50 pounds in 3 months and my skin on my stomach ripped open fast. No doctors could figure out what was wrong with me. I made my diet stricter, I hired a trainer, a nutritionist, etc. Nothing helped, the weight kept coming on. I got to the point of 85 pounds gained in about a year (had other issues to but will focus on the weight), and bouncing from doctor to doctor with no answers. I was so depressed and wanted to end my life because I couldn’t deal. The body positive movement made me learn to love myself when I had no other option. It saved my life. Turns out I had a rare brain tumor that was pumping me full of stress hormones and that’s why I was gaining weight. Since getting the tumor removed I’ve lost 55 pounds with 0 diet changes and also no exercise because I’m still recovering. I know my story is unique, but the body positive movement isn’t supposed to be to stay in bad habits, but to make people who are in bigger bodies feel like they’re actually people. It was wild how differently I was treated at a size 14 vs an 8

Really love his work, and yours!

This is a perfect example of why I live your channel. You are very balanced in your approach. You affirm and encourage while also challenging. That’s how I am while I work with patients as a therapist. I also loved your ending discussion where you gave a slight critique. I think when it comes to weight there is so much implied or unconscious judgement. There are many reasons why people are overweight and overeating is only one of them. And usually overeating is just the surface level symptom of a deeper issue. To just assume someone is obese because they just eat too much is a bit naive. Thank you for your insights and for sharing your knowledge with us! ❤️🌈

One of my favorite things is different egg scrambles! My favorite is the LEO which is also a great way to get some omega-3s if you eat fish. It’s super easy, just lox, eggs and onions all mixed together. I like to put a little dill or sprinkle a few capers on top, it’s also really nice to scramble the egg with a bit of sour cream (1-2tsp for 2 eggs). To add some carbs I like to serve it with a couple of the TJ frozen latkes with some sour cream and everything but the bagel seasoning on top. It’s also really good as a dish called matzo brei where you soak some crushed matzo in the egg mixture then fry it up-super good, I really missed it this passover since we couldn’t get lox

@@AbbeysKitchen YES I agree, Autumn Bates is so dogmatic about IF, not eating carbs, any insulin leading to fat storage, and even mentions that her 800 calorie keto coffee doesn't break a fast because it doesn't cause a spike in insulin and won't lead to fat storage. Her FB group is a bit scary too because people take her word as bible. She also mentioned how she often goes to Starbucks for meetings and orders coffee that she won't drink because she doesn't drink mold-free coffee and then throws the untouched coffee in the garbage - what a waste of plastic and money :(

I had Lyme (big bullseye rash on my leg) back in 1989. It took me 6 years to get diagnosed properly. I have done almost everything out there to get over it. One or two doctors helped the most. One doctor told me that the best "health" tip was to keep my stress down to avoid cortisol spikes and body inflammation. I had been going like a crazy person from this new health thing to another to get well. It was pretty crazy, but I am sure you can relate. The other thing that helped was when I found out I had a severe vitamin D deficiency..6ng. I now keep my vit. D at 60-80. The one thing I have done recently was to do intermittent fasting with low carbs. I do not eat after dinner until noon the next day. For some reason my body and brain loves this lifestyle. This is the best I have felt in many years and I lost 25 pounds. The one thing You might do is look into Dr, Gundry's video. He has a you tube channel and has his own practice. He works with autoimmune issues. He also has a book called the Plant Paradox which I have not read yet. He works first on fixing people's unhealthy gut bacteria. Many people with Lyme and/or autoimmune issues have leaky gut syndrome. Good luck..

More importantly it’s inspired me to want to eat nourishingly bc my diet before consisted of fast food, chips, candy etc. But I’ve struggled with eating before such as if i wasn’t craving it in the moment it would make me nauseous to keep eating it or even if something is delicious and i haven’t ate all day i’ll take a few bites and feel nauseous. Do you still take personal clients as a dietician? I could probably use the professional help.

John and his channel had gotten some flack from people supposedly from the "body positive" community claiming that his behaviours are disordered simply because he had lost a lot of weight and maintained the weight loss. Although John described his issues around food and his experiences with disordered eating, he also shows how much he has learned how to manage his health and hunger in a healthy way. He doesn't claim that sustained weight loss is easy, but it is possible.

I honestly used to be a subscriber of his. I like many of the points you make here and I generally like his content. There are times he comes off in ways that are not my favorite, but ultimately it never seems to come from a place of maliciousness, mostly just inexperience or unfamiliarity with certain aspects of different groups/communities. The reason I left his channel was his comment sections. I think he comes off as pretty reasoned and tends to lean towards compassion and I really appreciate that about him, even when he's not wholly succeeding at it, I think he's generally coming from a sincere place of care. A LOT of his followers, really don't seem to carry that same compassion. When he reacts to another person's content or talks about a confrontation with anyone or features people who have any sort of criticism of the fitness community, the general community response is so defensive and harsh, like cannot hear constructive criticism or even fathom they themselves have ways their mentality needs to grow. There are kind people in there, but I got exhausted from the callousness and cattiness that came from the comments. Consistently. With each upload I felt that way. It left a bad taste in my mouth. It made the parts where I think he could grow seem worse because those parts cultivated a community of people who lean on callousness to support him and I don't want to be around that. So I hope he does well and I hope he keeps that compassion. I just wish it was more present in his community.
