Thanks for the clarification. I think my throwout bearing is the culprit in my case causing shaft rotation. Reverse, 1st and second are all hard to get in to at a dead stop. Slightly moving and they usually go right in. Squeaky noise from the clutch that goes away when I barely start touching my clutch pedal.

There's a lot of bad pressure plates on the market these days.... If it's hard to get in 1st year say like a 3:00 PM when it's warmed up That's another sign of a back pressure plate after you replaced the master and slave 1,000,000 times.... Ask me how I know

This clears out some stuff with the problem with my bmw 120i It’s been pretty hard shifting to reverse and 1st been it was just yesterday that made my shifting impossible to gear into reverse and also does having a low gear oil a factor to these problem?

Kinda new to the car world as well as driving stick and I'm having a similar issue. Recently bought a 98 accord and the guy told me he recently replaced the clutch on the car before he sold it to me. The clutch feels pretty good and all the gears work. I noticed though that if I've been driving and I come to a stop, I'll engage first gear to take off again and sometimes it won't fully engage. To fix this I'll either have to throw it in neutral, let off the clutch, push back down on it and reshift into 1st gear or I'll shift into reverse then back to 1st. Honestly not sure what the issue is but it does get pretty annoying when there's a lot of cars behind me.

Next time that happens try instead on shifting into reverse try pumping the clutch pedal several time and see if it’s easy to engage gear immediately afterwards, if so you may have a hydraulic problem with master or slave cylinder

I have the exact same problem on my 02 civic, it’s not all the time. But sometimes after a standstill I shift back into first gear from neutral and it’s gets jammed half way and it won’t let me proceed, I usually shift back to neutral and first about 3 time before it finally engages 🫤

What about when you stop at a red light put it in neutral come off the clutch the light changes I compress clutch but doesn’t want to go into first?

Dude im having this exact problem and is why I am on this video lol I just paid my mechanic about $1700 to install a whole new clutch kit about 2 months ago, everything was working fine and like brand new until about 2-3 weeks ago. Shifting was super smooth after the install, then for the past 2-3 weeks, its just extremely hard to shift into 1st from neutral or into reverse from neutral, I have to double pump the clutch almost all the time from neutral to get into 1st or reverse if im at a stand still and it sucks lol. But the good sign like you mentioned, is that the shifter can go into gears easily when the car is not running, so if its a clutch issue, my mechanic should be able to adjust that for me for way less because its only been 2 months that I've had a brand new clutch. Scheduled an appointment with him this monday for him to check out and see what the problem could be, so wish me luck.

@@EuropeanAutoRepairso i just got my truck back today and it was exactly what you said lol. The clutch wasn’t fully disengaging and something about the flywheel wasn’t catching or whatever. Thank god he didn’t charge me anything, it was a free fix since he worked on the clutch only 2 months ago I think. He did say over time it’ll happen with regular wear and tear so bring it back to him again whenever. Hopefully it doesn’t happen for many years to come.

Hi,what about ,not quite smooth going through gears ,and slight crunch from 3rd down to 2nd ,or maybe I didn't have my foot far enough to the floor on clutch? That only append once! 2015 mazda 3

This is great advice from an honest mechanic.. obviously haha good man I salute you … and thank you I just acquired a 2010 Electra blue it’s a gem runs like a champ but been started/now worse , this very issue .. And that makes a lot of sense to me because I can navigate the gears and can even get it in first 1/3 of the time, but what I also, thought was a gear box alignment issue, Is most likely the clutch not disengaging properly/entirely it’s literally what it feels/sounds like when I force/fail to engage first

@@EuropeanAutoRepair so on my way into work, applying your knowledge, when disengaging the clutch and pushing it back down, allows me to smoothly put it into first, when engine off, it struggles a bit but seems to find first so I’m thinking clutch? I’m bringing it in next week

Ive got a 2014 Corsa when changing gears when driving or stationary with the engine not on its fine. However when it comes to stopping at traffic lights it becomes difficult to engage first gear again

In my case, I can shift into all gears with the engine on or off. When the engine is hot after long drives however, I have a really hard time shifting into reverse only. Shifting into 4th, then 3rd, then to reverse would work, but lately hasn't. Clutch and pressure plate is brand new with an engine rebuild. Wonder if my shift cables need adjusting or the clutch kit was bad.

Reverse doesn't have a synchronizer..... Did the terminator clutch get is bad Start the engine neutral and see how much the clutch fork is shaking..... Listen for a boat motor noise between each gear.... Do you have to rebleed the clutch every 6 days?... If all the gear shift smoothly even hot except for reverse you're doing really good.... Aftermarket clutches are very sensitive.... If you have any questions just ask me

my car doesn't feel like it fully engages into 1st or 2nd with the car on or off, and 5th is kind of tough to pop in and out now too but it'll at least fully engage, 3rd and 4th are normal

1997 Nissan Sentra Manual transmission here. Had the car for about 2 years but now it sometimes get hard to put into reverse. Sometimes it does a grind noise even when I press the clutch all the way inside. I have to double, triple pump yhe clutch then shift engage into reverse. Clutch going out?

If pumping the clutch pedal helps you get into gear it’s possible you are experiencing a hydraulic issue

Hi i have a 2007 Mustang V6 Manual and it wont shift into 1st 3rd or 5th even when the car is off. 2nd , 4th , and reverse work fine with no issues . Clutch is fairly new was just replaced in 2021. At one point it even got stuck in 3rd gear and wouldn't come out of gear. It took about 15 mins of it being parked to get it unstuck. Any ideas? Tramission fluid has been changed already too.

I have an issue: I've after installing a brand new clutch & flywheel along with a reconditioned gearbox. I tested everything out after installing the gearbox only and it went through every gear as smooth as butter. After installing the prop shaft to the diff (rwd car) and take it for a on load test, the gear selection and shifting is quite stiff/notchy. E91 320d (car in question) Any suggestions? Guibos are new. Gearbox oil new. Only thing to be renewed is the diff oil.

Are you using the correct fluid. I’ve seen issues in the past with the friction agents not working well with some synchos. Using factory fluid might be a good idea to eliminate that possibility. Does it feel as though it’s grinding into gears?

I have a F20 and when I put it in 1st gear it shoots sometime back in to neutral. I have noticed when I press on my clutch the small zooming sound that I have disappears I don’t know if that can be the problem.

It could be a input shaft bearing in the transmission or possibly a throw out bearing, seems more likely that you’re having a internal transmission problem

Hi I have experienced struggling selecting first gear at a standstill as I usually need to make an second attempts to get in in all the rest forward gears are fine but this really is an issue when approaching junction or from a standstill at traffic light reverse gear on my Car sometimes require a second go but I guess this is normal due nature of the gear so could this be my clutch as all gears engage when engine isn’t running

It’s very possible that the clutch isn’t fully disengaging, can’t be 100% from over here but might be worth having a local shop give you a second opinion

@@ryandudgeon782 yes I have actually considered changing the gear oil as they around 80000 miles on my vechile but every mechanic tells me it won’t make a difference maybe it’s linkage adjustment issue that why I haven’t done it and as for the clutch seems to be the original one but it not slipping which makes me think it hasn’t worn

2004 Honda Accord here. 5 spd manual transmission. Clutch is good, hydraulic clutch master cylinder good , slave cylinder is fine. Transmission has oil, and master clutch cylinder has proper fluid. Car has 242,000 miles. When shifting into reverse no clicks sound is heard with engine off, and gear shift lever does no stay reverse position just goes back to neutral. Same situation with engine on. Before this happened I was having problems with getting it into first gear, with engine running and getting it out of reverse gear with engine running. Could I need new cable?

Hey I’m having some issues with my mazdaspeed6. One day clutch pressure went out clutch went to the floor, since then I’ve replaced slave, clutch master, brake master, and throwout bearing, it’s a shared clutch and brake system. When I’m in 1st and try to take off it groans at engagement point. If I push in on the slave cylinder it doesn’t completely return to its original position right away. Is it possible that the system still has air in it? Could It be the reservoir cap? That’s the only thing I haven’t replaced yet, thanks. I know it can’t be mechanical since the issue initially was lost hydraulic pressure.

Not a problem with cap, I would push more fluid through the system before I tried anything else, make she that you clutch pedal is all the way out when bleeding system, may want to use a pressure bleeder

@@EuropeanAutoRepair clutch/brake fluid is brand new, attempted pressure bleed and thought It was coming out without bubbles but I’m going to try traditional pedal bleed and see if there are bubbles. Maybe let it gravity bleed longer? Is there a way to check for air leaks that I can’t see that don’t push fluid?

@@Jmac29181 is the bleeder hose that you are using clear? That makes it easier to see air leaving the system, im not too familiar with that application but if things get real weird and you still think you have air I’ve had some luck with reverse bleeding

Well explained :), I have a slightly different problem, while the care is driving especially after I drive in 5th fro a longer while on the highway when I get back to the city the 3rd gear is not easy to find, and sometimes it is very difficult to engage. It works fine if I shift from 4th to 3rd but not from 2nd to 3rd. What could cause this issue?

Heat related warped pressure play Using master and slave cylinder that doesn't come from the dealer that's heat sensitive..... You can always bleed the clutch every week that's what I do..... I'm really fast at it... Gravity bleeding simple

I have a E46 320D first gear is difficult to engage from neutral, but goes in fine if the car is rolling to a stop. All gears select ok when driving. Once 1st is engaged if you keep the clutch depressed it'll go in and out of gear fine. But if you lift the clutch then depress it, it becomes hard to select. I find selecting 3rd gear first then 1st the easiest way to get into gear.

I’m not 100% sure on that one, it’s possible that you have early signs of a clutch problem, if you can drive around it without too much trouble might just do that until the issue becomes more troublesome

Any good mechanic will tell you it's important to adjust a new clutches engagement & release points, especially if it's an aftermarket clutch. Sometimes when a clutch doesn't release all the way, it's a simple 2 minute adjustment at the pedal.

@@EuropeanAutoRepair didn't try it. But second or third attempts to engage the first gear after vehicle stop are usually enaging easier. Will try the pumping method next time and come back with updates. Thanks for the feedback !

The verdict : used clutch and too much hydraulic fluid. So I replaced the hydraulic fluid and leaved only fluid up to the max level. The car started shifting gears very smoothly, as if the clutch is new :D Thanks once again for this video !

@@EuropeanAutoRepair I have the same problem and the car goes into all gears fine when the car is off. When it's on after 5 minutes of driving time is usually when it starts to happen. It won't go into first so I'll take it out and try and again and usually the 2nd time it'll go in. I swapped everything already so I'm thinking maybe my short throw shifter is going bad?

Great video. Can it not be that the slave cylinder is bad/leaking? What would be the symptoms from a bad slave cylinder? Would not a symptom from a bad clutch be that it’s slipping in the revs?

Yeah a worn clutch disc usually causes slipping in high tq situations and many times difficult gear engagement. What’s nice about diagnosing a failing slave cyl is unless it’s the type that is built into the release bearing it’s a visible leak, simple one chamber piston in bore kinda thing, just from the drivers seat it’s likely to manifest as difficult or not possible gear engagement with vehicle running

@@EuropeanAutoRepair Thanks! I have a BMW 118d from 2006. I have the issue your describing on the video. When the car is stationary I have problems putting it in to gear, only when engine is running. When I manage to select a gear, and I keep the clutch in, I can easy select all gears. But as soon as I release the clutch in neutral, the press the clutch, I have the difficulty to select a gear again. No problems when car is moving, only stationary. Looks like it’s the clutch that needs replacing if I understand you correctly. Again thanks for the video and your answer

Well if you aren’t grinding into gears you likely aren’t damaging anything other than your clutch kit and flywheel.

@EuropeanAutoRepair Sometimes there's a slight grind, shifting into 5th gear, and same with 1st...but not often. Once the car is warmed up, shifting is fine

Typically old oil will not cause much as far a shifting concerns but incorrect fluid can cause the syncros not to grip correctly and grind into gears

I see you reply to everyone even after a year so might as well post a short one. Renault Megane 2 2004 1.9 dci 88kw. New clutch assembly. Everything new. Hydraulic release bearing, DMF, pressure plate, clutch cover with the springy things, everything. Shifts well while running or turned off. The issue is when you select the reverse (pull up, far right, down - on the stick) and then bring it back to put it into first. It wont move back to the left side from the neutral middle. So no first or second. Its not the gears, its the entire side. If I put it into third for example and then try the first, it all works fine. Something is not aligned well I assume. Any idea where to look at first? Thanks!

I am not familiar with that model as they never came to the states, I would see if you can find a alignment procedure for the shift cables and reset them before I tried anything else I think,

So today I was just about to leave for work in my new 99 323ci and couldn’t get it into any gear at all, would motion to go over but wouldn’t engage into gear but when pushing the gear stick to whatever gear the car starts creeping almost like it’s just grabbing the biting point or that feeling just before you stall even tho my foot was fully compressed on the clutch 😂 gotta love BMWs 🤷‍♂️

Having this exact issue with a 2010 Ford Mustang GT. I know nothing about cars, so forgive me here, but what exactly are you saying the fix to this is? Everything does exactly as you showed in the video (goes into gear when vehicle is off, but won’t engage 1st or reverse when vehicle is on).

On your car I believe the clutch slave cylinder is built into the throw out bearing so that’s basically a clutch job either way

Bought a new car and right now its on the dealership they are trying to fix it. We saw the fingers of the pressure plate had some miss alignment, damaged release bearing and clutch plate has some hit, clutch kit in short Then they repaired it and new release bearing. Then they assembled it, it has the same problem. Now what was the problem. It doesn't engage to 1st gear along that it creates a grinding noise same goes to reverse. 2nd 3rd 4,5th gear it hard.

Yeah shouldnt make much difference but if the gears aren’t lined up well might let the input shaft rotate slightly and move into place better

What would it mean if the temperature made a difference? Real difficult to engage a gear when the car is cold. But when the weather is warmer, or the car has been driven for a while, it gets easier to engage the first gear from stand still.

The only thing I’ve seen really act temp sensitive as far as shifting is trans fluid type, not a bad idea to start by installing the factory recommended fluid

Yes, if you replaced a hydraulic component related to the clutch it may need to be bled again

You're wrong, I've spent alot of money having my clutch and slave cylinder replaced because my mechanic was insistent they were the issue. And yet my gears are still jamming when the engines on

Replace clutch kit if you have trouble selecting gear only with vehicle running and hydraulic issues are ruled out

Relating to this , brand new quality clutch kit and flywheel (exedy) Having this exact same issue, thank you for this vid btw! was perfect before and hydraulics check and triple checked. Stage 1 clutch and lightweight flywheel now though. Chances my master cylinder was fine with oem but can’t hold the enough for the new clutch? or should I look elsewhere if it was perfect before the clutch change ?

If it was perfect before the clutch change and now you can’t select a gear with the car running and you’ve already bled the system properly something is up with that clutch kit, I’ve even seen clutch disks installed backwards in the past

Thanks for the reply. I did actually look into that and in my case thank goodness If it was out in backwards I wouldn’t be able to get it into any gear. I checked with my oem one after the fact thinking why didn’t I triple check this when installing? I just installed the new one and the same configuration. So I’m good there. I guess I have to suck into and pull off the trans to check it out 😢. being I was planning on the EM2 CMC Upgrade. I figure it won’t hurt to swap the cmc out and hope for the best but I’m mentally prepared that I’m probably going to have to pull the trans. While it is totally driveable and all I need to do is double clutch or put the shifter into 2nd then first when this occurs. I don’t want to ruin anything and I also am too picky to live with this when I know it supposed to drive perfectly. I almost wonder had I left the oem clutch alone would I be dealing with this 🤔 Thanks again

If you pump the clutch pedal a couple times and then quickly try to select a gear does it improve the shift? What kind of car are we talking about out of curiosity? Just wondering if it uses a release lever on the throw out bearing

I have a bmw 325xi 2003 manual, my car got stuck on the road on a section were it was flooded with water, water started to get into the car to about 3 inches tall, Never turned the car off while I was there finally someone towed me and got out of there the car drove fine next morning went to turn on the car, it did just fine but when I tried to put it to first gear it wouldn’t let me, but when the car is turned off it will go to any gear, any Idea what it could be?

Flushing transmission fluid is a good idea after being in that much water as well, sometimes it gets in the vent

@@EuropeanAutoRepair when the engine is off mine is super easy all gears go super super smooth . I just changed the cluth and pressure plate . But its so hard to put in 1 gear or reverse . Not always but 50% of the time

@@EuropeanAutoRepair i found out when the car is not fully stopped, and i change fast into 1 gear when im driving on 7-8 km/h goes super smooth most of the times . But when im fully stopped is super hard most of the times , and the other times i gotta double or triple cluth but i can still hear a grrup noise when i go on first gear
