Reverse gear can be hard to engage and when it does go in you may hear a horrible crunching/grinding sound. In this video I explain how to select reverse gear successfully, why the sound happens, how to avoid it and why reverse is more difficult than the rest of them.

Hah man this is something that should be mandatory in driving school, no one taught me this. When I got my first car a 91 VW Polo, was a bit battered but was super cheap and good for getting me to work it had issues going into reverse, all sorts of clunking, screeching and got forbid the sounds it made. I figured the solution to it and it was going to reverse slowly, if it doesn't click right, back to neutral and so on until it goes in smoothly. I never understood the issue, I just thought it was an old car and many people even mechanics told me the same thing. Fast forward I am in my brand new VW T Roc and would look at that, SAME PROBLEM, although at a much lower scale. This video just opened my eyes. Thank you very much!

@@loganmontes5969 Any forward gear will work, doesn't matter which one. However, some cars have a lockout to keep you from shifting directly from 5th to reverse when reverse is right below 5th. So if yours won't let you shift from 5th to reverse, just use another gear. Hope this helps

This was very helpful. I encounter this more often than I like on my car. I always thought it was caused by the gear lever not slotting in completely or me not clutching in all the way or the fact that my car's hella old. I'll remember to ease up slotting into reverse the next time. Thanks!

I've heard that reverse gear in a hybrid car or electric car is just reversing the electrodes from + to - inputting into traction motor(s). At least the first move in motors in a hybrid car before the ICE kicking in. I have no idea if it's true. They say that's why both hybrid cars and electric cars could be shifted to R gear suddenly from D gear while the car is still going forward. The motor will extremely harshly brake your car and pull your car backward suddenly, which might fastest stop your car and save you from emergency critical situation if any all other braking ways even aren't fast enough to stop. But I have to verify and find out anyway.

Hi CD. My theory test expires on the 7th august but my twice delayed practical test is booked for the 13th. What should I do?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 года назад
It's odd that you've been able to book the practical for when you have an expired theory. You will need to pass the theory test again before the practical test.
@MianCowell
@MianCowell 3 года назад
@@ConquerDriving I feared that was the case. It's the DVSA re-booking my test that was meant to be in February. I guess they don't take the date of the theory test into account for that.

My Toyota hilux 2019 model 6 gears always spins tyres and makes noise and the gear shift locks itself when I make a mistake of selecting wrong gear let's say from 5 directly to gear 1 is it normal
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 года назад
I'm not sure exactly what's happening to be able to comment. But wheel spin is normally too much gas and lifting the clutch up to quickly. It shouldn't happen simply because you have selected 1st gear when you're less than 5mph.

@ConquerDriving

That's fine, it's best to hold the clutch down for a second before selecting reverse though.

Wheel spinning uphill suggests the car or tyres not appropriate for the hill. Or you are trying to accelerate too quick.

That is odd, maybe the clutch isn't fully disengaging but I'm sure you would be aware of that. Perhaps the gearbox is still bad. Not a lot else it can be unless you're not pressing the clutch all the way down.

@@ConquerDriving oh I’m pressing the clutch all the way down and the gear box is completely rebuilt I just spent 4 thousand dollars on that. Could the clutch not be disengaging properly and it’s a bad slave cylinder maybe??

what is the fix for the grinding?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving Год назад
There is no fix for reverse gear grinding because it's not broken it's just how it's designed. However, you can avoid it as explained in the video
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving Год назад
But if you mean "what is the fix if you grind your gears away", it would be a very expensive gearbox rebuild.

@@cv4809 I'll never understand why some people feel superior, because they drive manual. If you actually have a license you would understand that driving is not just about changing gears it's a small percentage. Paying attention to the road, analysing the situation, understanding what going on on the street, defensive driving etc etc etc is a HUGE part of driving. Braking, changing gears and parking is certainly not all there is to driving. I live in a country where you can only get your license in a manual, but there are still many accidents, because of people like you who think driving is just about steering the car🤦🏽‍♀️. I could care less if a person is driving an auto or manual as long as they are safe and adhere to the rules of the road.
@TwenOalley
@TwenOalley 3 года назад
@@mbsmile78 There's nothing specific to autos that you need to learn. If you can drive a manual, you can drive an automatic. Literally just put the car in D and drive with the accelerator and breaks. You can never stall, and you don't have to shift. The only advice I can give is consider using the lower gears for very long downhill roads. (www.allstate.com/tr/car-insurance/safety-tips-mountain-driving.aspx ) Also, don't coast with the car in neutral if you're using an auto, just stay in drive. Even at traffic lights, just stay in drive and hold the breaks.

I accidentally did this as a result of muscle memory. I was slowing down and instead of switching from 3rd to 1st, I accidentally switched to reverse and it made a scary grinding/crunching noise.. i'm hoping my car is fine and nothing is damaged but now I am paranoid! Please someone reassure me that my car is gonna be fine! It's the first time I've done it and I'm scared to hell to drive it again after that😭
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 года назад
Doing this will cause damage to your gearbox, but if it's still working that's the main thing, best to change the gear oil as metal particles will be in the oil causing abrasion. There are usually magnets at the bottom of the gear box to catch these metal particles but I wouldn't rely on them.
