@@DIRT-BOSS Check out "Demolition Dave Drilling and Blasting" youtube channel. He is in Australia and blows up tons of rocks for swimming pools and other construction projects. Entertaining guy as well. If you haven't seen it I think you will like his videos. Don't know how much it costs in Australia but I got quoted around $130,000 (they said max $150k) for an in ground 20x40 foot pool with 3.5ft shallow end and 12ft deep end, all concrete. That included a small building for all the pump and filter equipment and a safety fence. I checked with 3 pool contractors here in Arkansas and they were all within a few thousand of each other on the cost. I'm just going to do most of it myself. I'm 100% sure I can do it for around $35,000 including paying for the concrete work to be done since I don't want to mess with that. In ground pool prices are absolutely insane. It's a hole in the ground with a vinyl liner or concrete lining and some pipes/hoses running to a pump/filter. There is not a single thing on a swimming pool that is complicated or should be that expensive. Digging a hole is easy, thats maybe 8 hours of work even if you have never run a backhoe before. The plumbing for a pool like that is dead simple, water goes out to the pump/filter, water comes back in from the pump/filter. The hardest thing is concrete and I can get the guys out here to do the concrete work for $1500. The concrete will be expensive (the additives are the most expensive part) but it's nowhere close to being a $130k pool by any stretch of the imagination. It's not a tiny pool but it's a bog standard rectangle in ground pool. People have been building these things since the Roman Empire was around. I've got friends who have done this kind of work and they agree with me on my plan and where I think the costs will be. I'll have an extra $20k just in case things go sideways since no matter what you are doing something is going to go wrong. My biggest problem will be water ingress during construction since the pool will be 15 feet away from a 2 acre pond and if you dig 24 inches down the hole fills with water on any day of the year. I'm glad everyone I've talked to said it's not a big deal and is pretty common in the area. I dug a test hole with my friend who has done pools before and he said it wouldn't take much of a pump to keep the water pumped out since it was filling slowly enough that it didn't make him think it would cause problems with the construction when I decide to do it. Which is the reason for concrete and not a vinyl liner. All the contractors and my friends have said it has to be concrete because the vinyl liner will get water under it and float away from the ground even if the pool is full. Best of luck, glad it was you on that machine and not me. I did that on a Caterpillar 320L with a hammer on it for more than 3 weeks. I ran the machine for a year after but that 3 weeks was just horrible. I went through about 1200 feet of rock down to about 30 inches for an 8 inch water main. It was miserable. Luckily there isn't a single rock anywhere on my property so I can just get a friends backhoe and dig it out in a day.

I'm surprised someone didn't outline the edge with a diamond saw. It would give a nice edge. Probably need a big one, like 4'. Or even drill a bunch of holes to define the space.

Man you just made me feel good about digging pools here. Nothing but sand and roots, maybe some ground water here and there but no rock!! Holy cow I don’t know how you guys do it with all the rock and how you keep your machines in working order. Great job!!!! Tell those pool guys to stop using that flex pipe it’s going to comeback on them one day chlorine eats that stuff up in a few years.
