You can get null for individual ailments early, but not *all* ailments, that is actually a much harder passive to get. So you either have to swap null skills onto him as the situation calls for them, take up five skill slots with all of them, or grind a lot deeper to get the one that nulls everything.
I've said this before but personally I feel that you only really need 3 ailment nulls at most, for most situations. (Not a lot of bosses use Mute, or at least, don't use specific Mute attacks. Demi-Fiend's Mute side effects don't get press turns off Cielo.)

15:44. Oh wow, I didn't know Bryce Papenbrook's dad was a VA for this game. Definitely agree with you on Cielo. He is definitely this game's "Lethal Joke Character" because of how the Press Turn system interacts with Null Ailment skills. I've seen Let Players in more recent year talk about broken Cielo is because he can be set up to sit there and drain your opponent's press-turns. 38:35. Now that I think about it, the way Cielo is treated by early GameFAQs reminds me of Emblem Leif from Engage. A lot of players misunderstood what they were designed for, Cielo stealing Press Turns and Leif for having some of the best Skill Inheritance in the game (Built+, Vantage, and giving all Weapon Proficiencies except Tomes and Arts)

I feel like having more status susceptibility is a worthy tradeoff for having no weaknesses, and as you've gone into in the comments you don't have to null every status for him. In general I think it loops back around to Cielo being a generalist when the cast up until this point have been more specialized.

I actually picked up on Cielo's greatness right away. I blame the hate on people being impatient and not thinking things through. I honestly don't get the purpose behind speedruns or other "challenges". I guess they're more important to LP's and streamers to get though more games faster, but for the now SMT/JRPer in my 40's, I like to take my time enjoy the games I play analyzing mechanics and optimize as I go. That's what drew me to Persona/SMT in the first place. The lore behind all the character's/demons/Persona's is just so subversive that I'm spent hours researching all the different mythologies/phycological concepts and I just find it so fascinating.
I like to take my time too, but I appreciate speedruns because sometimes they reveal which tactics are broken (it's how I discovered putting all Serph's points into Magic) in turn-based games. Let's just say Tentarafoo in DDS2 is kind of insane.
@@BigKlingy That's definitely something a my completionist side can appreciate. I tend to make my main characters mages any chance I get (one of the reasons I loved the Quality of Death mod for Nocturne), so it makes so happy to see it's not only a viable, but OP build in this game.
lol that mod name. But Magic builds are actually pretty good for early Nocturne. I'm glad for mods that make it good in endgame though. Magma Axis is a cool skill that deserves more love.

Until you get Godly Spirit which itself requires, if I am reading right going through a lot of effort and money into mastering multiple lines of Mantras for only one skill that gets rid of his weakness As while passive skills to help his weaknesses are available a lot earlier than others, Since they would have to go through a full Mantra line of one element, it does mean that to make his weaknesses not apply during regular encounters, that’s around half his skilset full of passive skill and since regular eneocuntees are by default random you cannot exactly switch around which ones you have activel While by comparison you can either build more towards certain styles or give the other party members more options for regular encounters since for example I could go fully into Ice and Fire damage on Serph since the 6 skill slots for a elemental skill, Boost and Amp are free. Albeit with bosses which are set fights that you can control when you fight, that’s different, the Bonus Boss in Destiny Land has no ailments that Cielo is weak to, the Bonus Boss in the Vanguards base that I assume that guy in front of the Red Wall was talking about, he only needs Null Nerve. 24:09 So someone who speaks for the Protagonist who uses Wind, He is essentially Yosuke. Like how some of the anti Blazing Blade backlash in Fire Emblem would be perpetuated by parts of the Binding Blade fanbase, since the common narrative used to be that Blazing Blade was way better.
I don’t know how well it would fit exactly, but if they ever do a DDS remaster it’d be nice to see Bryce Papenbrook voicing Varin, since his dad was the OG. I’m sure he could do a deeper voice but I can’t think of any examples off the top of my head.
You need five separate passives (I think? null charm, poison, nerve, panic, mute) to completely cover Cielo's weakness in this game, unless you go all the way for "null ailment" which is one of the hardest mantras to get in the game. That's a lot of skill slots used up unless you already know what you're going to face and can pick and choose. They made null ailment much easier to get in 2, which is part of why he ended up in my final party in that game.
Equipping every individual Null ailment passive wouldn't be necessary because a common strategy I see from people for Digital Devil Saga is to go into the boss with whatever you have, take some notes on what the boss uses, eventually die and readjust your party accordingly.
Personally I find Null Nerve, Null Charm and Null Panic is enough to get by in most regular battles. That's three skill slots, but most others are running Boost and Amp for their elements anyway.
@@bradleyharris774 The Superboss will auto-kill you if you have any immunities set when starting the fight, so Null Critical and Null Sleep are the only Null skills allowed for that specific fight.
i personally don't like using Cielo in the active party towards the endgame, but i do like stacking up all the healing abilities on him, including ailment heals, so he becomes a true walking (flying?) terminal
At last. Though trials and tribulations(binge watching) I have caught up to the playthough. Quick sum up on my feelings so far: -Everyone has the munchies -Heat is a jerk. Mostly. -Argilla is my favorite -Gale is a meme(and that's great) -Cielo is Jamaican(and that's great) -Sera is here -Balanced Serph is my favorite Serph I never thought Cielo was bad. But I didn't use him that much. Used him a lot more in the second game though.
Cielo. I remember being so confused at the hate and how people thought he was only useful against the infamous Superboss. Firstly because I didn’t know the Superboss existed at first. And secondly because I noticed how kinda busted he is in both games. It is to a point I try to play both games without him in the party unless he is the only third option because I am not confident enough to play the game with only two characters or even one. Though I am disappointed he didn’t start out with a unique laser spewing move. Oh well. At least he is the best at eating up foes turns. He can do it so well he can do it in his sleep. Ratchet 1 and 3 have the PDA it is quite late on the third game cause it is in Quark’s Hideout. I swear it is more useful in 3 but that might be because of the Gadgettron weapons not dropping ammo from crates. Though I do think it is used in speed runs of the first game and not the third funnily enough. Though the third game has so many powerful weapons and tech I am also not surprised that even with RaC 1’s discoveries and tech people still abuse that PDA to become god and skip the dreaded ice planet. Though the community is crazy I love it. I mean hey. People found Orxon Skip even if it was slower just to prove it was possible Also just coming off the direct and seeing this ship makes me hope for something similar from Prime 4. I wouldn’t mind another derelict vessel to traverse

In Persona 1, it is called Clean Salt which also sounds kind of strange. Having an item like that would be very useful. Reminds me of something strange I saw before. I was also reminded of Resident Evil Dead Aim although the ship in that game is still on water. Cielo really be tempting fate. There are probably some FF characters that were pretty misunderstood. I am tempted to say Gau but his situation is that most people know he is good but a lot of people don't put in the work to make him good. On the surface, it does sound really bad to be weak to Panic and stuff but if it is easy to null, we can turn that weakness into an advantage. With Gale going after Debilitate eventually, it sounds nice to have Cielo around with buffs like Makakaja for example. Good to hear you are making good progress with Vengeance and good luck with Master Duel grinding as well. As for myself, probably will try to complete 1000 Miles after writing more comments since I have been a bit busy with those today. For TTYD, me and my brother managed to conquer that second half of the postgame so we have reached 100% completion. I did write my short review about it and I say I am more than content with it. @@BerserkerRohan Okay that I can get since I think P1 actually deals with you fighting demons and in some places, salt is a way to repel evil and other wicked things, so salt being a repel item is clever. Yeah, while it came super late and was hidden well, the elixir was nice for the many fights you'd have in the final dungeon. That he is. Guess we have to be extra careful if characters can tempt fate as they learn how to have actual emotions. I'd have to look more into Gau's case, but I know plenty of misunderstood characters in many other games. I can at least understand where the confusion comes from as it's justifiable to be scared of a character weak to all of the aliments in a SMT game (where they're generally more powerful than most games), but it does kind of stun me how most didn't think to use the Mantra System to speed him down the way to get the anti-aliment passives for the longest time. @@jaredfayette2567 You do fight demons in that game so it does make a good amount of sense. I can see it being a somewhat late item in DDS as well. Actually, Odin from Conquest is probably the main example now considering most people didn't think he was that great until they released he is pretty good with Nosferatu. Being weak to ailments must have been seen as a really bad first impression back in the day but with more knowledge of the game, it does seem very easy to conquer that weakness. He could fulfil similar roles to Argilla but I believe she has more magic than Cielo which is a big boon for her but nevertheless, Cielo is very solid in his own right. That is good to know. I will probably reply to it tomorrow once I find the time.

I knew about gale being a late addition to the game but not about his role as serph’s mouthpiece also stemming from cutting dialogue from serph. On one hand that’s a disappointment, on the other Gale is one of the best characters in the saga so, meh. The whole cielo bad thing from early gamefaqs really does feel like it’s based off the old “big numby good, use argilla for support you need less skill slots and do good damage at the same time”. Kinda like the gba fire emblem guides rating Lyn and Ests high because of growths. The whole idea of that sort of strategising just didn’t seem to exist at the time and it really does only come with time
I've always been confused by videos like these now that I'm playing the actual game. In my playthrough, neither Gale, nor Cielo started out with Protection mastered, and my Cielo started out with Yaksa and the mantra with Mamudo mastered, unlike the footage in this video. I'm not sure whether this is a blessing or a curse as of now, because while mantras like Fierce Spirit and Adamant are easy to get at this point, it's still a large amount that I'm missing out on, and I've seen how even the Innate Mantra Line Only run of this game by Megido had Death access on Cielo thanks to Yaksa, while he doesn't have it in this video. Tl;Dr: A challange run, this playthrough, and my own playthrough havve conflicting starting Mantra lines for Gale and Cielo, and I don't know how this happened.

So how are we feeling about the Nintendo Direct? The Mario and Luigi game looks nice, but my main takeaways are the Fairy Tail Action RPG game and Dragon Quest 3’s H2D Remake. Alongside 1 and 2.
