There still is some pretty interesting issues concerning RWRs. For exemple, and I haven’t been able to reproduce this due to a lack of friends, but when a mirage 2000 launch a r530d, it might sometimes not render as M2K as it should, but just becomes a question mark until he stops guiding the missile. I saw it happen 3 or 4 times in total I think.
I am still a little bit sour that my bug report on the AN/ALR-56M for the F-16 got marked as "fixed" while it is still missing the C and D band coverage. Doesn't matter much, but being able to detect rolands before they lock you up or shoot a missile at you is kinda nice...
Yeah seems like it's pretty difficult to get them to fix RWR stuff. The F-4J and F-4S have the wrong RWR and it's a very straightforward fix but they won't do it

there actually is an in-game guide on RWR which i managed to discover by complete accident; entering the "help" menu (via esc menu or f1) and going onto aircraft or helicopters allows you to see RWR types under the RWR sub-page, as well as the indicator meanings through the "RWR Threat Types" button in the bottom right
The F1 is very funny this patch. If you are unspotted and lock someone, very often they just turn cold expecting a Sparrow from the “F4”. Which allows you to fire an AIM9P and watch them try to notch it 😂
How does the new rwr react to tws? It often feels like, that the other players don’t react to a tws scan (and even soft lock), even if you are the last one on your team and they have to search for you.
It might be the enemy team not being able to distinguish your nail from friendlies. TWS won't trigger any warnings even when locked so they can't easily pinpoint you
Jaek, a bit of unrelated topic but have you also realised the tomfoolery surrounding radar missiles atm? Started happening to me like 2-3 days ago after a patch dropped My 27ER's would just phase through the target that is flying high and towards me. That's just complete horse excrement. People started to notice lately too, I've been telling everyone about it but they'd just go off about how they've killed someone with them. What about you? Have you experienced anything similar?
Yes. I've had radar missiles blatantly not fuse on a target they absolutely should have killed. I haven't had the bug where you can't launch them but I know that's a common issue right now. On top of that I played some lower tier matches and I had serious issues with targets not getting spotted (not only the nametags but also the dots, a b29 was completely invisible until 6km). Game just feels slightly wrong recently.
@@jaek_898 Man. That's rough. Hopefully Gaijin is aware of the issue because as you mentioned, it's probably something going on with proxy fuse. I also have an issue that I had forever, my radar missiles' seeker would just turn itself off when I turn it on to engage someone. Super annoying in close ranges where I need to send one off quickly. These problems build up and make things even more frustrating than they already are.

G'day, Ohh well that was an extremely helpful video, Thx for this and I'll probably write a bit of this down, Seems the subreddit might need to pin this video as there's often a post asking for the bloody F-18 (uurgh why can't people just use the search bar over asking the same thing in post? For five minutes). I think it's Kuban in +8.7 RB AF that has proper NF targets so if you end up on that map somehow (not seen it in a few months) you will run into the radar of the Baltimore class Heavy Cruiser which yeah can hit aircraft as far back as the auxiliary airfields heh... Then there's the maps that have Aircraft Carriers/ Aviation Cruisers which you may get in a blue moon so that's another spot for naval radars. But yes you'd be right needing to be in a CB to see all naval radars since I don't believe there's an 7.0/.3 aircraft with RWR yet.
They did put the F-20 in the F18 group, but its radar isn't the F-18 radar and as far as I know they have nothing in common IRL so I'm not sure why grouped them together like that. But for now, F18 can only be an Italian AV8 or an F20.
(not because i was trolling) i killed him above his runway after he survived an engine fire i set in his f14 and that made him mad and me "thirsty" somehow, told him mobius wouldn't run lol after the match he messaged me saying "you wouldn't win a 1v1 f*g"
I like how rdr shows a warning from a cold aspect ally and a missile warnings also from allies shooting a missile at enemies completely in different direction. I think that shouldn't happen xD
@@m1sz3lpl24 yup, it detects a waves, but the ones hitting the vehicle itself. Understanding how a pulse doppler radar works explains why it shouldn't happen and why the vehicle going in front of us in the same direction shouldn't be picked up and alarmed as a threat ;) To many information is as bad as no information at all because I just start notching allied missile shot at the totally different direction making me out of combat until I realize it was friendly F16 and not an enemy F16 -.- I always get a better score not looking at rdr at all now and going brainded at ground lvl where pd sarh missile goes dumb even with strong lock, while it also should't happen, but it's wt top tier so just an arcade with 1 respawn now
That's the ARI23333, I forgot to include that in the first video but it's like the 18238 and ALR-45 in that it only has a couple texts that it can show. It used to be "friendly" which really meant western (so NATO radars usually) but I think they removed the friendly groups a few days ago
Wondering if it was worth touching on detection of radio command emissions to SAM launches or not (if it actually works like Gaijin said it would). Unless I missed it in your previous vid.
I tested a couple of them on the dev server and it seemed to behave how they said it would in the devblog. But I cant tell exactly what makes the RWR detect launches by looking at the files and I dont have all the SAM systems so I cant test them
Just a question, may I know which SAMs system will trigger the Missile Launch warning? Or what the criteria are. I’m aware that ADATS and ASRAD won’t trigger the RWR’s missile launch warning. And I’m also confused about the Harrier Gr 7’s RWR at times it is showing AIf PDf etc
Their devblog only lists Roland, Volna, Tor, and Tunguska. Harrier GR7's RWR is unique, I forgot to include it but it should have been part of the last video. It's one of the rwrs that shows text on the display, but it only has a couple texts it can show. AIf was "air intercept, friendly" and included western radars, PDf was "pulse doppler, friendly" and included western pulse-doppler radars. But they removed the "f" groups recently.
Just asking because I am curious. The AShm (AS34) on Tornado IDS would trigger RWR when it was released. Did they remove this feature or can I somehow misleading the enemy that there is a AIM-54 flying slow as hell? Edit: I just test it and yes it can. Also it will also trigger my own tornado's RWR as a MLS identification with launch warning so I assume everyone gets the rwr warning from the Ashm. Probably not a good idea to take it even for fun, it will just confuse your teammate more than your enemy.
I don't know if it's a bug or not but now in Sim Battles the F-4 radar doesn't pick up ANYTHING. Friendly or Enemy. Not sure if that's because it can't pick up the "band" or not but I'm pretty sure it's a bug because there is no way in HELL the F-4 Phantom RWR can't pick up radar signals from literally anything. It works in RB so why not Sim? I tried multiple matches with both the F-4J and F-4S and the RWR was completely silent even when MiG-29 were launching radar missiles at me.
@@jaek_898 AN/ALR-45, used by post fix navy Phantoms as well F-14A and A6E doesn't detect PD radars in Sim either. At least it covers J band to help in RB? It is also reason why many contacts appear as "?". Keep in mind SB have both Band and Radar Mode limitations, RB only Band, AB have none.
Custom localization, check description. Ill have to update my github because gaijin added an option in the menu to turn custom localization on which makes installing easier
I'd rather like to know, why in the hell is my RWR showing my teammate infront of me locking someone else and showing me locking and launching warnings... Can someone explain why my RWR behaves like i have an AWACS flying over me? I'm even detecting enemies locking up someone else and getting launch warnings for it
Basically radars don't emit nice clean beams of energy, theres sidelobes and backlobes and a bunch of other stuff I don't understand. That is all modeled in war thunder. The problem is the RWRs are WAY too sensitive sometimes and will pick up just about everything. I think they just need to be tuned.
It didn't used to be like this but the devs changed it so that ANY signal that you receive that is strong enough to guide an SARH missile, sets off the RWR. Before this change, it was for instance possible to get hit by SARH missiles without getting an RWR lock, because the main lock was focused on chaff or another target for instance. So it's a double edged sword, it's helpful in some circumstances but an annoyance otherwise. Anyways, back to your original question. Are you familiar with how light, or rather electro magnetic waves behave? Well, if no, in short like waves in water. As a result you can't really make a perfect a very thin beam of energy. The main radar beam's width is about 2.5-4.5° in WT, so you can kinda compare it to your IR missile FoV in terms of coverage, and this is only the half strength width, so there is some illumination still outside of this range, but it falls off pretty fast. Additionally to this, creating such a big focused beam creates a lot of unwanted sideproducts called sidelobes. This is a product of the constructive (and destructive) interference of the radiowaves your radar produces. Most notable sidelobes are the one that surround the main beam, ones that cover your direct sides (around 90 degrees from the radar's front direction) and one pointing directly to the rear of the radar (referred to as the backlobe). These have some significant power still behind them, in WT apparently enough to guide SARHs so they trigger your RWR as well. I'd need to run some calculations to estimate to what range these sidelobes are effective for (be it triggering RWR, or missile guidance). But they should be in the order of 100 to 1000 times weaker than the main lobe. But since the main lobe usually can brightly light up a target at some nearing 100km range or more, these sidelobes can do that as well for several kilometers. Nice solution, which Gaijin still hasn't implemented, is to just turn OFF friendly radar pings. Or at least give the option to turn it off dynamically. It's just distracting as hell.
@@Wotplaya4 Yeah, the Kifr radar's backlobe is absolutely UNREAL, i've been "locked" by one that was 20km in front of me when he was facing away from me. And I was getting 'locked" by a tornado GR1 in the same situation when he was 30km away and we were traveling away from each other... It's cool that they model this stuff but sometimes I wonder if a simpler approach would have been better for gameplay as well as saving development time
@@Wotplaya4 I get what you are saying, my problem was that i'm getting RWR pinged in instances where it should be literally impossible. ex. enemy Mig 29 to my left, 90° from my position about 5 clicks away, facing/flying away from me and locking up someone infront of him, is giving me RWR warnings about him locking me up and getting launch warnings. I know the modern RWR's can be more sensitive, but it can't just straight up be misinforming me/giving false alarms this often. It's happening both on friendlies and enemy aircraft. Like you said yourself it has about 2.5-4.5 degree beam, which in those cases is nowhere near me when he is facing away from me. And it was possible to get hit by SARH missile without getting the RWR ping exactly because of the beam not facing the aircraft. Right now if your radar is even locked onto a single enemy plane far away from it's group, the rest of the group will get RWR warnings as well.

@@Mikkel281 The N001 (su27 radar) is not the same as the N019 and N010 (mig29 radars), but western rwrs still show it as MiG29. Since the N001 is a new radar in wt, if they wouldnt have added it to the threat table it would be showing up as a question mark.
I just hate the MiG-21 RWR, is so inconsistent in simulator I always get one tapped from radar missiles without having a clue that i am being tracked And when i do know that i am being tracked is so hard to understand from where since it has only 4 target directions 😅
@@Panocek as far as I know the radars are functional identical. The difference is in their airframes as the ML doesn't get wing slats so it pulls less AOA
@@a_catfish5180 i'm actually planning on making another one because i've learned so much more about RWRs and the more I learn the deeper the iceberg goes For example, F-15A being undetectable by russian jets in sim (should be fixed tomorrow) And gaijin makes no effort whatsoever to explain anything beyond the absolute basics....
@@jaek_898 I’ll raise and say that I doubt gaijin know what they’re doing all the time… jokes aside the most painful part is like you said how inconsistent it is I’m genuinely unsure about teammates triggering your rwr because sometimes I swear I should get more pings from my teammates (or they all just turned off radar) and sometimes I get pinged by my team constantly and or randomly Wasn’t friendly rwr triggers removed at one point and now is back? Does it work on the same basis as iff even if that doesn’t really make sense?
@@a_catfish5180 it's on a per-rwr basis. If your RWR has IFF (most newer ones do), teammate radars get filtered out. Older RWRs usually don't have IFF. Radar IFF and RWR IFF are completely separate.
