In this episode of Adventures in Archiving, join me as I unbox a treasure trove of retro tech goodies! 🎮 From encountering load errors to fixing a broken tape and testing out a vintage printer, it's an adventure filled with nostalgia and excitement. Let's dive in!
I wanted to give you an update on my archive site, but let's save that for another video. For now, let's focus on the archiving journey ahead. It all began with a box from the Dutch version of eBay, filled with pristine RadioShack products. 📦 Among them, the main attraction: a Color Computer 1.
Join me as we explore the contents of this box, including cartridges like Polaris and Color File, along with manuals and documentation in Dutch. 📚 Despite a bit of grime, the computer cleans up nicely, and we're ready to test it out with games like Galactic Attack and Frogger.
But the real gem of this lot? The included software and joysticks! 🎮 With plans to digitize the cassette tapes, we dive into the process using Audacity and a trusty cassette deck. Along the way, we encounter some interesting surprises, including trumpet music mixed in with computer programs!
As we test various programs and troubleshoot loading issues, we also take a closer look at a vintage printer and its colorful ink pens. 🖨️ Despite a few challenges, we manage to get some programs running and even print out cassette labels.
So, join me on this 20-minute archiving adventure, and discover the joys and challenges of preserving retro tech history. 📼 On my archive site, you'll find the tape files and instructions for use with your Color Computer or XRoar emulator. Stay tuned for more archiving adventures, and thanks for watching! 🌟 #RetroTech #AdventuresInArchiving #VintageComputing

Really cool channel. I didn't know TRS-80 even ever was sold in Europe. Nice to know. I also enjoyed videos about Sharp minicomputers. Also really nice to see some good quality photos on your website. Archiving all these games and programs, is also a huge thing for history.

Out of curiosity, I went to online auction site in Switzerland (ricardo), and I found some Tandy stuff, including Tandy 1500 HD, laptop computer. Pretty cool and not too expensive.

It's funny I stumbled onto the last two videos I'm gonna be archiving some audiocassettes next week. I think the audacity issue was a bit overblown sure they wanted more than they backed off but then nobody seems to follow up on anything so I think it just boils down to wedding have some Basic System Information.

Great video! @18:45 The only (really) odd thing that I can see is the NEXT statement before the For/Next loop. But it could be there to service a previous For/Next loop. But why wouldn't it have been placed on the previous line? Those pens look like the same ones that we (as in you and me) use for our Sharp handheld PCs with the tape and plotter adapter. There is a place is in Germany that sells them, and it's a medical supply house (I think). "Merz Medizintechnik GmbH · Ferdinand-Lassalle-Str. 24 · 72770 Reutlingen" and you want to go to the "evidENT Shop" tab and search for "plotter" in there. They go for ~30 Euro per set of four. If you find them cheaper than that please let us know. :) These are intended for the Sharp, but I would take that with a grain of salt and make sure they will work for you before you purchase them. Typically I see them for the Sharp for ~$75 USD with no idea as to how long they have been in the package. Shipping to the States is rough at 55 Euro.

The Dragon and the TRS had the same basic innards and operating system so some dragon games will run on the Color Computer and vice versa.

The main two differences with the Dragon are that the ROM is different (the routines are all at different addresses), and they changed the order of the wires for the keyboard, so CoCo software needs patching to take these into account. Otherwise they're basically identical - although the CoCo has a serial port and the Dragon has a parallel port, that won't affect games.

POKE(T,64-T) or POKE(T,(64-T)). Like someone else commented, i don't know why NEXT: is at the start of that line either. That NEXT must be for an earlier FOR:NEXT loop. The FOR command in line 140 maybe should be on its own line (141 would do). The loop starts at FOR and subsequent lines are executed until it gets to a NEXT statement, then it loops back to the FOR again and continues. The problem could be that the FOR is the second statement on that line, so moving it to its own line would make more sense. I never used this version of BASIC, but different versions are similar. Ok, question. Why do you route the program audio through a cassette player? Why not just go from your modern computer to your vintage computer with a (mono) 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead? Nice video, but the way.

That is a good question! Should have adressed that. I found that using a direct lead (when I tried it) was a bit more unreliable then when I used the cassette adapters. Also thought that using a bluetooth adapter would allow for people to use there phone or tablet. I’m aware of the big downside to using the adapters is people not having a player, but felt sort of safe assuming people that own a colour computer also own a cassette player. A little upside is that players with seized up belts should still work using this method. But now I’m thinking it would’t hurt to look into the direct lead option again! Thanks for the helpful Basic program advice!

@@RetroMels I've got a BBC Model B. 80s computers tend to like the tinny sound of shoebox cassette players. However, I'm into Minidisc and I once experimented and recorded a program from my PC to Minidisc, and then loaded the program from Minidisc to my BBC Model B. It worked like a charm. I might archive all my tapes to Minidisc too, for that physical-media feel and load-times, but with random access to each program.
