Daididau is a protest song. In places where they cannot go on the march against acts of governments, protest songs take the form of sad songs to move people towards empathy with that suffering the unfair act so as to be able to make it know and not letting them forget. Magzhan Zhumabaev was a Kazakh poet and writer part of a group of Kazakh nationalists who wanted a new national government independent from their Russian overlords. He was arrested and convicted for the 10-year deprivation of liberty. To break him psychological and emotionally his captors lied to him that his wife, his love, to whom Magzhan called “Daididau”, had run away with a lover. So he wrote a poem “who will I tell about my sorrow and pain”. Finally Magzhan was executed by shooting on 1938. That´s why Dimash was so moved singing it.

this song is very dear to Dimash and he sings it at most, if not all of his concerts. Gloria Wu's channel has the backstory for this song shown before Dimash's performance on Singer 2017. In an interview, he said he wanted to sing this song to the world. He loves his country so much and is so proud of it's history. Dimash is a 29-year-old Kasakh vocalist and composer; he speaks kasakh, russian and english and is learning mandarin chinese. He sings in more than 14 languages, plays 7 musical instruments. He graduated from the Kazakhstan University of Arts with a master's degree in composition and a doctorate in musicology. He also dances, acts, and is an advertising model (he is 6.3 feet tall). He has received countless awards and honors around the world. He was recently in Los Angeles, USA, working on his new material that his fans (he affectionately calls us "dears") are looking forward to. He is a kind, well-mannered and compassionate person who leaves his culture and his country very well attached wherever he goes.

I was very lucky to see Dimash live in Düsseldorf/Germany last year. It was overwhelming and one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard and seen in my life. 🥰 Dimash also sang DAIDIDAU, which was very emotional and the audience sang along too.

Dimash is very patriotic. He loved his country, his culture and always respect other cultures. He has sung songs in 12 or 23 languages but speaks Kazak, Russian and English. He is learning to speak Chinese. You will see a lot of Kazak instruments in his work of Art and also vocals that may not be familiar to the Western world. We DEARS love him not only for his talent but he is an amazing human being. Humble, unpretentious and very dedicated to his family. That’s the Kazak way!! Thank you checking Fimash out. Daididau is definitely a fan favorite, such a sad story too. If you don't know the background, the author of the poem, which they turned into a song, was imprisoned and was told by the guards (to be cruel) that his wife left him. His nickname for her was Daididau. They sing Daididau-ai because roughly translates to Daididau-love. So the song is about lost love.
