Dimmu Borgir is one of the biggest names in black metal around the globe. Not sure if their tenth album counts as black metal, but "Eonian" is a majestic piece of symphonic and dark metal for sure. This album managed to surprise us positively. See the review here!

It's a massive musical puzzle of an album. Listening with headphones 2-3 times is mandatory to get all the layers of it. Only in the first song for instance you have industrial samples, classic black metal riffs, piano, synth, orchestra , majestic choirs and a bit of acoustic guitars. Not a boring moment for 54 minutes IMO is one hell of a success. You can see that this is the peak of songwriting due to experience and time taken to create. As much as I love(d) to death Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, Eonian is on another\different level of epic

its an "ok" album. However after waiting 8 years I hoped Dimmu Borgir would have deliverd something along the lines of Stormblåst.

I desecration there are laterally 10 thousand bands playing that

Not that I'm a fan of Stormblåst, but waiting for another like that is like waiting for Metallica releasing Kill em All part 2 :)

Choir sounds like they don't know about what they are singing. They sound paid. And songs are so simple they easily fall into background music. Composing is good but there's not that depth Puritanical and Dimensions have.

Almost every metal band that takes real choir and real orchestra playing with them manage to sound just plain dull. Would expect it would be much better than just synth choirs and strings but for some reason they almost always tend to suck.

Everytime he says the bands name instead of a drinking game eat a Demon Burger 🍔
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 6 лет назад
Not only that, but do five burpeen, five push-ups, three pull-ups and ten ab crunches everytime the band's name is said, and you got yourself a nice quick work-out routine there! Then one has deserved that demon burger ;-)

Great review, but I would definitely say this isn't Dimmu's best album, to date. That's a tough choice but in my opinion, it would probably be Death Cult Armageddon.

The last good db album was death cult armageddon imo. After that it feels like the band just lost their way and have been trying weird stuff. I dont mind black metal bands testing things, some of my favorites have large folk influences and those bands know how to test new stuff, not like db who try w/e and release it.

Dimmu being kings of the symphonic metal? Listen to some recent SepticFlesh which is a prime example of how you can combine the symphonic elements with metal. SepticFlesh is able to interweave a massive orchestra and choirs into their songwriting while I feel Dimmu is just injecting some choirs now and then (or on this album in every song almost) to not have you notice the very bland songwriting. Same could be said for the Finnish band Shade Empire or many other bands who decide to implement orchestration and/or choirs. I do admit this album sounds fantastic, Jens Bogren did an amazing production job but then again, he's one of the best in the business for a reason.
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 6 лет назад
Nick Pardon can't say I disagree with you. SepticFlesh are great in what they do. Shade Empire never made a big impact in me.

There were some good parts but the choirs really killed the pace and moon of many sections.

I'm not a hater to begin with. There is nothing wrong recording for the masses or new crowd, but such a band went from black metal towards Pop metal in a low complexity and quality I reckon. The last track is just mediocre, probably feat in a Walt Disney movie. I think there are better things to listen out there, just check out the last of "River of Nihil, Defeated Sanity, even last single of Immortal within others
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 6 лет назад
I don't think it makes much sense comparing bands like Defeated Sanity to this one. Different audiences for most part, wouldn't you say? I haven't bothered with the Immortal single yet. I'm waiting for the full album. Rivers of Nihil is somehwere in my digital album "pile". Eventually I'll give it a chance but it has to wait because "FIFO".

That’s why I’m comparing DB with those bands, because in my opinion DB is not longer an extreme metal band, just a pop metal trend. With not offending, just being realistic mate. Still I like your reviews!!
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 6 лет назад
Aye, and I fully agree. Like said in the review, the reason why I like Eoanian is not because it's extreme metal or black metal, but because it does Therion better than Therion itself (and same applies to Satyricon - which is not very extreme nowadays). Thanks!

Necroticnarcosis Hi! That's not a stupid question. Like the saying goes, there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers. Short version: I'm Jerry and I'm a long-time metalhead. Been in a few bands before I got in reviewing metal and gigs in early 2000's. I've written thousands of reviews by now, lots of gig/festival reviews, dozens of interviews etc. Also been a metal blogger for many years. This channel was founded in 2017 in order to do these interviews, reviews, opinion videos etc in English. For longer reply and more info, see this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7sRk41Qo5AM.html

Fun aside I was a big fan of Dimmu Borgir... BUT this is NOT a memorable album and NOT a fan of the change for record sales to make up the paychecks of the orchestra... This was a mixture of Satyricon, Therion, The Kovenant, Samael, and other Symphonic Black Metal but I classify this as nothing more pointing to records sales and them forgetting there roots because nowadays the "Black Metal" bands say they play extreme music it's like covering up the shit and being ashamed of being labeled as Satanists just like those who don't want to be labeled as Goth as being Gay... As a Trve Metal I give no fvcks what anyone thinks!!!
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 6 лет назад
I know what you mean, and can't really disagree. However, since I was never big DB fan (even if I had my moments with EDT), I had no problems with DB changing their style a bit. Being a fan of Therion I was kinda happy that DB got into that "zone". And like said in the review, I don't mind them having better Satyricon riffs than Satyricon themselves! However, like said in the review, I don't care if Dimmu isn't bm anymore. To me it doesn't even compete in that department. There are tons of better bands doing better bm, but Dimmu is good with its symphonic stuff. Not maybe BM, but I don't care :)

It's not good album at all, it's like random Nuclear Blast "harmless metal". There are plenty of great albums out there, don't listen to this bullshit
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 6 лет назад
I totally understand where you're coming from. I think Eonian is "harmless metal" indeed. But I have soft spot for some harmless stuff (most of them being non-metal) and this album is one of them. But like I said in the review, I don't think this is a good album for being "black metal" because I don't think this is a black metal album. Hope this makes sense to you.

Yes, it's makes sence to me Jerry. Maybe i will listen to it one more time, but don't think i will change my mind.
