They changed his name to Tolkien for political reasons, but they want you to believe it's for the sake of a gag. Juste like in "the fractured but whole", they wanted you to believe that choosing between cisgender and transgender was only for the sake of a gag... While it was in fact really important for them to include the possibility to choose your gender identity. They subtly pretend it's a pretext for some jokes because they're scared to be labeled as SJW.

definitely had a cold when he recorded the audio as Randy sounds just as strange too. That's the problem with their lazy writing process, recording all the audio a day or two before the show airs means that if one of the voice actors catches a cold then they don't have time to wait for him to recover and record the audio when he's back to sounding normal

To firmly establish a character (including his name) over many years, and then out of nowhere, suddenly let the audience know all thus time that they got it wrong is just genius.. Holy crap this episode was amazing! Token is Tolkien now. Also Jason White appears in this episode but he was killed off in season 23, this is probably just an error but it’s great to have one of my favorite characters back.

Which is the best part of the joke, that people will internalize this like they were racists for understanding the original joke of the only black kid being called "Token Black". Even with all of the times that they showed his name spelled as "Token" I'm sure there are people that will believe his name was actually Tolkien the whole time.

I'm not sure if this is just in response to the PC movement or if it was just meant as a parody of it but this is how you do a proper retcon. Even the captions in the older episodes say "Tolkien" now. It's become canonical even to the older seasons. South Park writers truly know what they are doing.
