I would say as far as story telling goes Bruce Dickinson has him beat. But as far as vocal ability Dio is practically unrivaled (except by maybe Bruce and Halford)
NOT So Average Joe Bruce, Rob and even Freddie for that matter, aren’t even in the same league as Ronnie is and it’s not even close really. If you don’t believe me just ask Bruce and Rob and they’ll tell you. There’s video of both of them saying it. As far as story telling goes I’ll take Ronnie as well. Two reasons why... Ronnie actually writes his own lyrics where as Steve Harris does 99% of the lyric writing. Steve, at times, seems to write his lyrics without thinking about phrasing and whether or not it’s going to work which leads to Bruce trying to fit in an extra 2 or three words into a phrase that really can’t handle anymore which leaves us with Bruce sometimes speed singing at the end of verses just to get all the words in which really messes up the flow abs the rhythm of the song. If you listen to a lot of Maiden you’ll find that it happens more than you know. Of course this is my opinion and obviously the problems mentioned haven’t stopped people form listening to IM obviously. Just not my cup of tea.
SOOOO TRUE, ME TOO! By the time he comes to the ''...before we learn to FLY! (1:06) I just dont know what happens with me, I feel like IM about to pass out, I feel almost es I would take a fucking extasy pill, really intense! It just hits me so hard.... I feel like I'm lacking words to describe this!
I disagree. I feel dio is a wizard who is forcing his views upon you with his amazing powerful voice, whereas ozzy just kind of half-heartedly sings, but you feel his pain. You know this guy is a tortured soul singing about real life problems instead of wizards and dragons (which is also cool like, but maybe not everyone's cup of tea). Both so different but in the end equally as amazing for different reasons.
Ronnie always wrote very intelligent lyrics, with multiple meanings. Duality of life. The mark of a great poet. I'm sure the guy has read a lot RIP DIO
Dio was born with natural talent, I agree? But he wanted to set himself apart from the rest so early in his career Dio chose the Ultimate price, yip, he sold his "Soul" for Rock n' Roll! El Diablos' "contract is payable upon death & Dio fulfilled his end of the deal to the very end. This man entertained us like no other!
Funny! Was just going to say it's one of the greatest Sabbath songs Sabbath never made! I totally equate it with Heaven And Hell for being epic! Was just getting into metal as a teen in the early 80's and Heaven And Hell blew me away, along with Holy Diver which was released about a year after I hear H&H!
This was my first concert. I will remember it forever. There were two Black Sabbaths, each distinguishable from each other. Both accomplished and worthy.

Dio's music was so unique. I think all of us can put ourselves in one or (me personally) more songs. There is just something magic about the words and the music all put together that I've never heard and probably never will again but that vast collection of magic and music will live forever and ever. Peace, Love and Magic...Forever and ever! \m/
Wow he was dialed in and so deeply in the zone during this performance!! He owned the story he was telling. What a tight band behind him as well. Took a Black Sabbath song and made it a DIO SONG this night in 1983. Geezer and Tony would love this I'm sure.
You will be missed foreved, Ronnie. you have left us and this world but here you will never truly die. You will live on in you music, youre voice and in our harts, R.I.P Ronnie James Dio THE true metal god
what a way to start the new year! The energy and intensity in this performance are undeniable...like I just went to church. Man, I still miss dio everyday. Like all kinds of music but seem to keep gravitating back to something from the little big man! One thing is for certain, you will never mistake another vocalist for dio. truly a one in a billion voice with such character
there's none better, I never tire of listening to Ronnie singing, I will miss seeing him live but I watch the videos daily, thank you to all who put them on the internet to be seen
It's very hard for me to choose, but this is my favorite from the Dio years. The "Live Evil" version is truly amazing. That whole album is "off the charts" Anyone remember that album? R.I.P. Ronnie...........R.I.P.
Definitely the best live version of this song with the mini solos added in by Viv. I wish this song were available in high def audio. Other live versions Children of the Sea on CD are: Dio. Donnington UK: Live 1983&1987 Dio. Evil or Devine Live in NYC
What an amazingly expressive voice Ronnie had! He was always totally absorbed in telling the story and brought words to life. Backed by Tony Iommi’s powerful riffs and licks and a great bassline. I’ve loved this song since I bought Heaven and Hell on vinyl in 1980
Jimmy Bain is hitting Geezer's lines under the guitar solo almost note-for-note. I wish I could've seen Dio on this first-album tour where they would have had to use a good bit of Sabbath material to fill in the set-length.

I loved Ronnie's mythic material. He starts out soft, "Once upon a time," then lets rip and takes you on an incredible journey. Many people didn't get it; for them the world is black and white. Just because those ignoramuses botched their Enigmas roll doesn't mean something is Satanic..
One of the best rock albums of all time! Summer of 1980 listened to this every single day back then! we truly lost the rising SUN! RJD May god bless you and may you sing with the angles!!! RIP MAN!
