I plan to listen to everything Dio has ever recorded because to me, he is just that vocal genius that demands the attention. And this time, we're going back to the top requested song by all of you on our last Dio poll, "Children of the Sea"! I wanted the studio version to get every single morsel of his vocals in the cleanest audio we could find, so here we go!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Black Sabbath performing for the first time "Children of the Sea".

I always thought that Dio had the incredible ability (at least I perceive it like this) to "split" the voice ....one perfect picht and the other slightly dissonant at the same time ......obviously it is not possible but this is my feeling

Hi, I just wanted to mention something! You mentioned how this is younger Dio, and well, compared to the 2000s it is, but this is a record from 1980 and as many mentioned already his career started in the mid-50's some of his earliest unrecorded vocal work both as a vocalist and as a support/backup singer was around 1955 with groups like The Vegas Kings, The Rumblers, The Red Caps and his first recordings as singer / frontman are from 1957 onwards, by the time he started working with Black Sabbath he had already founded and played with Ronnie and The Rumblers, The Redcaps, Dio and The Redcaps, Ronnie Dio and The Prophets/Dio and The Prophets as bassist/singer and with The Prophets, The Electric Elves, The Elves, Electric Elf, Elf & Rainbow as the frontman and lead singer. He had already quite a resume before being part of Black Sabbath and was one of the forefathers of Hard Rock and Metal, it was really the obvious choice for Black Sabbath to team up with him since the admired each other's work. There's in fact a few Black Sabbath covers by Elf of the early 70's from live shows. Just imagine that, of looking up to a band and years down the line ending up playing with them! How awesome is that!?

@willowtatus6159
@willowtatus6159 9 месяцев назад
@@locusmortis My only bitch about Powerslave is how tinny the guitars sound. But yeah, this was a masterwork for him, mostly because it's stripped, no frills, you can hear every note everyone plays. A little doubling on Dio's voice in impactful moments, some vocal harmony, but it sounds like a band, not four people contributing a hundred tracks to put together a pastiche.
@HeadacheCentral
@HeadacheCentral 6 месяцев назад
The nice thing about the production is also how no-nonsense it is. Maybe some double-tracking for the guitars, some additional layers for the vocals, but otherwise it's a pretty dry record where you can hear everything that's going on. No sound crowds out another, it's all pretty well represented.

"Children of the Sea" is perhaps the most distinctive song from the Black Sabbath album Heaven and Hell. While the writing credits on the album are given to the entire crew of Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler, the rest of the group already had the tune while Dio, brought in to replace Ozzy Osbourne, wrote the lyrics. Dio tells how this song became his welcome to the band: "I met them at the house that they were using to rehearse in and purely went to say hello and get to know them. I had no thoughts whatsoever of being in the band. As far as I knew, Ozzy was still in the band. During the conversation, Tony asked me if I'd like to see the studio they were doing their things in. He, Geezer and Bill picked up their instruments and started to play [what became] 'Children of the Sea' and I liked it very much. Tony asked me if I could do anything with it. I said, 'Give me a few minutes, I think I can knock something out.' We pretty well wrote the song that quickly."

Since you are such a Fan of Dios Storytelling, I HIGHLY reccomend the Song "Bible Black" by the Band Heaven & Hell (yes, named after Song/Album). They where Dios last Project, and in this one he tells an incredible Story. His abillity to encapture the listener with his diction, his emphasis and subtle use of distortion is, imho, almost unparalled, even for his standards. That paired with incredible musicians around him makes this one of my absolute Highlights of Dios entire career. The Guitar sings alongside him, emphasising storypoints, creating tension, and its just incredible. you will absolutely Nerd out on that one, I guarantee it.

The ‘theramin’ effect during the last quiet section in the song was simply a ‘sawtooth’ synthesiser sound employed by Geoff Nicholls. Incidentally, Geoff’s keyboard parts are one of the rarely mentioned magic ingredients to Dio era Sabbath performances. They glued together the guitar and bass parts, and complemented Dio’s expressive vocal lines perfectly. This contrasted very noticeably on following Dio band albums where the keyboard inclusions, in my view, were much more pedestrian.
@kernelpickle
@kernelpickle 2 года назад
Ok, I heard that extra little bit of dirt on it and knew it wasn’t a pure theremin-but I wasn’t sure if they were just using a synth to emulate that sound or if they just ran a theremin through a Big Muff. I kinda wanna hear a theremin played through a Big Muff, because that’d probably sound pretty sweet.

I'd really like to hear Elizabeths take on "Sign" because for most of the song, there's literally nothing but drums, a bit of Geoff Nichols on keys and Ronnie. It's not just a fantastic display of RJD, but of the grasp these guys had of song dynamics: with just drums, light keys and voice, when Tony and Geezer come in for the chorus, the contrast makes that crushing riff even heavier sounding. And Tony, for all his (in)famous ego clashes with Ronnie, cared more about the songs than about his own parts in them. That song actually became *heavier* because of him playing less in it, and he knew that and went for it.

I know Dehumanizer isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but outside the myriad of classics on Heaven and Hell, I reckon “Too Late” is one of his best performances with the band. The next song on the album, “I”, is also right up there. His voice was such a finely-crafted weapon, and the control he had over it was unbelievable. In one moment he could use it as a cudgel to beat you over the head with, and often literally in the next breath it would be a scalpel used for the most delicate surgery. Quite astounding.

Sabbath fans barely noticed, Dio fans barely noticed, so much was happening in the rock world at that time, that the work was tragically overshadowed. I had the cassette when it came out, liked it, but got lost in grunge, and heavier metal. I rediscovered the album later, to much more appreciation, (songs like "TV Crimes" seem a little dated, and aren't prime Sabbath, but eh) as it really had a harder edge than most Sabbath. Less fuzz tone, more crunch for Iommi. Cheers

Yeah this is one of the best sounding albums black sabbath ever made. That's due to producer Martin Birch. He had previously done the rainbow rising album with Dio which you've heard Stargazer from. We waved, she waved back. She walked down to the floor edge corner of the stage walking toward us. I got chills and goose bumps all over. She asked, "would you two like to go back stage and meet my husband Ronnie and the guys before the show?".. "yes". Ronnie was a beautiful human being, the rest of the guys were too, Geeze was quiet but humble, Toni was engaging and kind, gave us each a guitar pick, Vinnie was a wild man, funny, gave us each an autographed drum stick. It was amazing. Wendy walked us back to the stage edge, going to our seats. And this huge 6'8" tall monster big dude gave us each a shirt, I still have the shirt, drum stick, and guitar pick.

Thank you so much for doing a studio version of this song! You actually miss a great deal of what many of these singers can do if you skip the studio version, and especially if you do just live video versions of the songs. Ozzy and Dio are both known for their interaction with the audience when they play live, most times to the detriment of doing something like analyzing the vocals. The recording and production is something you completely miss when you do live video versions of songs, and in most cases the recording and production is pretty serious business to why the band is successful, and the vocalist esteemed, and that has nothing to do with studio trickery or hiding faults, it has to do with their control over "this is how we want to sound, this is how I want to sing."

Thanks a lot for what you are doing. Wish you the best .

I love this song! I have been waiting for her reaction to this song. Dio’s vocals on this song is just iconic. And the music is legendary.

Pretty much anything Ronnie sang was gonna be gold. I remember tearing up when I heard he passed. As a recommendation I would suggest Siouxsie and the Banshees: Cities in Dust. Siouxsie has an amazing voice.

Would love some Siouxsie on the channel. Another option would be the gorgeous Love Crime that she recorded for the Hannibal TV show. One of the best songs to end a classic show on ever.

I love how you describe how the voice works. You go into great detail,but the beauty of it is that even a musical dummie(fan only) can understand. Thank you for these 101 courses! You videos truly help me to understand these wonderful sounds! BTW I love Dio!

I was lucky to see Dio several times throughout his career including a classic Black Sabbath set when I was just 14. Every show he did, there always were slight differences in his vocal presentation, not just "like the record"9 You really felt he was performing, adding those special bits and extending/sliding notes and even varying his line delivery. As he aged, his voice stayed true and while he lost a bit of power, he could still drive a melody and make you bang and get your horns out. He was always in time and any pitch variations seemed his decision to serve the song, especially during his live shows. Always a true musician with his voice. R.I.P. Ronnie, you are always in our hearts and your music lives on. Good job as always!

Hi Elizabeth. It’s so nice just to watch your reaction and your facial expressions as you listen to Dio’s voice and the music. It reminds me of my own reactions when I first heard these songs. It’s so nice to see you go through the same emotions and make me feel them all over again. Black Sabbath with Dio was the best rock and metal band of all time. The songs, the talent and Dio’s amazing voice. One of a kind. There will never be another like Ronnie James Dio and he brought out the best in everyone he worked with.

How about Karen Carpenter? she was so good that when doubling her vocals a big problem was phase cancellation. her notes were so precise in level, frequency and vibrato, either live or in the studio... and her vibrato was so perfect that she would regularly cancel out. Unreal. When doubling her voice, the note would disappear, not just small part of it, but the whole note sung. they had a hard time doing it, so it was rarely done. Simply because she was just that good. All the time, every time.

And to think that she didn't want to be a singer. She was also a good drummer and often sang while playing the drums.

I would love to see you do a breakdown of a song Dio did with Kerry Livgren of Kansas called “The Mask of the Great Deceiver.” Duo’s voice on that is incredibly expressive. Some of his best work, in my opinion. He had one other song on that same album called “To Live For the King,” in which Kerry Livgren stated the entire outro was ad-libbed by Dio, and which fit perfectly. By the way, love your channel and watch it on a regular basis. I appreciate how you sometimes “geek out” on some of this stuff. Makes it fresh and fun. Thanks for the content and I helping even old guys like me discovering new music and artists, as well as rediscovering some old friends.
