This is by far one of my favorite songs of all time. Its message, the vocal runs and how flawlessly Dio brings out that emotion is insanely captivating. He is a god.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Dio performing "Don't Talk To Strangers” live for the first time.

Dio talking about his singing if anyone is curious DIO: Well, that-- I’m always asked questions about singing: “How do you sing like that? How do you do this…” and I usually get that from other singers who say it to me like this [speaks in raspy voice]: “How do you sing like that?” Well… I know what you’re doing wrong… are you singing from the diaphragm? “No, I sing from up here.” Well, there you go -- there’s your first mistake. But, it goes so far beyond that and all the things that I’ve learned about how to do it which all came very naturally to me because I started as a trumpet player. I started when I was five years old, so I just applied the same technique. So, I think that I probably will, at some point, do a video, and show people how I do it, anyway, and see if that helps ‘em out at all. Because I’ve had one guy -- only one guy -- that I’ve ever really told any of my secrets to, and that’s a guy by the name of Jeff Pilson. Jeff, who’s played with George Lynch and Dokken, and who played with us as well. Jeff had come to me and said, [in a high, strained voice], “Gee… how do you do that?” [laughs] “Oh, well, Jeff, here’s what I do… THIS!” and he goes, “Ohhh… so that’s it!” He was able to apply it. Everybody else that I’ve told this to, they get this big blank look on their faces, so I think I just need to learn how to explain it a bit better to people, perhaps. Or I think maybe I should just have more time to do it, as usually it’s the guy going [raspy voice] “How do you do that?” and it’s between sets, you know? Well, I tell them I’ll be doing a video someday. And they go [raspy voice] “I’ve give you thousands of dollars if you’ll just teach me -- just be my teacher!” You know, that’s not what I do. I’ll do that when it’s all over for me. I don’t want to give my secrets away anyway! [smiles] I just know how to do it, you know? There are ways to do things. The first thing you do is you start with a song that warms you up: you don’t start with something that’s going to blow your brains out, ‘cause if you do that, you’re screwed! The unfortunate thing for me is… song #2, through whatever comes next will blow my brains out! But at least I’ve had a chance, via that first song, to find out what shape I’m in, what I need to do and how I need to do it. See, I’m a very lucky person. When I sing, I get stronger and stronger and stronger as I go along. So if I do two hours, by the times two hours has passed, I could do another four hours ‘cause it’s easy for me. Then I’m really, really warmed up. But warming up has been something that I’ve always hated. I hated warming up as a trumpet player, so I never did that either. And I hated warming up as a singer, ‘cause I couldn’t stand to hear people in the next dressing room going, “oh-ho-ho-ho-HO-HO”! What the fuck are you doing, anyway? This is rock and roll, pal! You know? If you can’t do it without doing that -- FUCK OFF! But that’s what they have to do; that’s what they have to do, and I’m one of those very, very fortunate hybrids of nature who doesn’t have to do that. Hey, perhaps I’d be ten times the singer I am if I warmed up -- but I don’t think so. My attitude has always been this: I’ve only got so many notes in my voice that someone either there [points up], or there [points down], has given me, and I’m not gonna waste ‘em. I don’t waste them in the shower, in the car: I only sing when it’s time to sing. So, when it goes, “One, two, three, four”-BAM -- I sing! The first note goes out, I go, “Not bad. I can deal with it.” I’m just giving my secrets away already here… Dio talking about opera and Tony Bennett DIO: The guy’s unbelievable! You think to yourself, “How can he possibly do this anymore at that age?” Simple, he’s that good. You know, some of the great opera singers have been able to do it for so long, because they’ve got technique -- just like I know how to do it, Tony knows how to do it. Pavarotti knows how to do it -- that’s a different animal though… opera. Opera singer is a different animal. That’s so much tax on the voice, I mean, at that level all the time, it’s hard to be that… and most of them die of heart attacks, anyway, because they start to overeat and emote so much. I think, again, if hey, Sinatra was still singing when he was that old, you know? It can be done. Why not? Sammy Davis, Jr. was belting it out before he died, and I mean that was the greatest entertainer that ever lived, so, why can’t I do it? [smiles] Sure I can. If I can be this much of what those people were, then I’m blessed. Dio: But growing up for me, first hearing music, was with my grandmother and grandfather who listened to opera all the time. My hero was a guy named Mario Lanza -- he was my hero. I loved that man so much when I heard him sing, I thought, “Wow! Check him out!” My dad was a really good singer, too, never was a professional, never even sang in an amateur way. I used to hear him sing and would think, “Whoa! That’s pretty good…” But in the case of opera, I heard these people singing, and I went, “Wow! Check that out! Wow, that’s amazing!” So I always wanted to take that attitude, and put it into a rock-attitude, when I had a chance to create my own things. Of course, I started out in copy-bands -- everybody does. You have to learn your craft somehow. So I sang a lot of R&B; as a kid; then when I got to write things, wrote in a more classical way, because as a trumpet-player, I played orchestra music all the time. So I applied all those themes, and I’m talking classical ideas, opera ideas -- and was smart enough perhaps to put them into the music, and then lyrically, populate it with the people that I read. As a kid I was an only child, and I was just a voracious reader -- still am to this day, and I read a lot of Walter Scott, Edgar Rice Borroughs -- the John Carter of Mars series; I used to love that stuff that Borroughs wrote and all those wonderful things that maybe used my imagination. Knights on charges, you know? You didn’t know about those ‘cause nobody will ever see that -- nobody will ever see a dragon. So I had to create these things in my mind. I thought, “Wow, that’s so cool!” So when I had a chance to write I took all of those parts of my life and put them together, and what you got was “RONNIE JAMES DIO” - “Mister Fantasy” who’s stayed very true to what he’s done, which is one of the other reasons why I’ve been successful. I’ve been given a strong and flexible voice that realized its potential because of my trumpet training. My instrument technique was transferred to my vocals and has allowed me to do it properly and to last this long. Opera was something always around me when growing up and influenced much of my later style.

With all due respect, if Ritchie Blackmore wouldn't have discovered Dio's talent, he wouldn't had gotten to the place that he reached. In and interview, Dio said it himself. He was struggling Rock singer in "Elf" for sometimes with his guitarist cousin David "Rock" Feinstein. When Dio left Elf, David went on and formed The Rods. They both gained more success than Elf era (David less that Ronnie though).

@@farshadelmianvari6763 That's quite the crystal ball you have there. Tell me, what's Monday's Mega Millions numbers? You don't know shit what would or wouldn't have happened if Dio nvere hooked up with Blackmore. None of us do. Did Blackmore help him? Yep. Dio might've found his way without him. It's certainly not like once Dio left Blackmore his career stalled. It was just the opposite.

@@johntomasik1555 Instead of being a Blind Hardcore fan, read carefully what I wrote. He (Ronnie James Dio) said it himself in an interview that Ritchie was the reason his career took off (it's on youtube. I'm 100% sure that you are capable to find it). And yes. Maybe he could get somewhere later on without Ritchie's help. But like you said, "Might Have" but Ritchie's help, turned that "Might Have" to "Definite". Ritchie had something that Dio didn't at the time... What's the word??? Oh Yes. International Fame and Experience. He could even turn an average joe like you and I into a famous singer... Also, don't get me wrong. you are talking with a big fan of Dio. I have his logo tattooed on my arm. But it doesn't make me to close my eyes on the Facts and reality... Like you do. Cheers...

He wanted to play the hits on a couple of tours and started the band back up. I had gone and filled in with DIO in 2005 on some stuff - I went back with DIO - and David said, 'Look, make sure you come back home. Don't stay with Ronnie [James Dio].' And I just told him right then, 'Look, if we're gonna move this band forward, we've gotta come up with some brand new WHITESNAKE music.' So, he said, 'I don't know when it's gonna be, but you and I will be in the studio at some point. I can see it.' And I just took that as, 'Okay, I'll start writing,' and I'd start presenting David with music here and there, and he started to gravitate towards it and invited me up to write with him in 2006. I guess it was 2007, we had a great run of songwriting sessions, and we put together an album called 'Good To Be Bad'. But hey, it's music, I'm still not sure what I like better - the idea that lyrics should represent what the lyricist meant, or that they are what they are to the receiver. Re the message, Dio wrote this 20 years after composing the song: "I was very angry at this time, coming out of Sabbath, and it was reflected in the songs on Holy Diver. The way I saw the world, anyone who wasn’t family or a close friend was poised to cut me open with a knife. That’s how I felt. This was a negative statement of my own disenchantment, and I was projecting it out to anyone who would listen." (Source: Genius, quoting liner notes from a compilation release) But I think it is legit to see this song, at least in its later performances, as an ironic take on "protecting your soul", just as Elizabeth says. Dio grew out of his disenchantment. And after all, the voice telling us not to smell the flowers is "anger and pain", and one hardly should treat life from a position of anger. (edits for clarity)
@lucasrinaldi9909
@lucasrinaldi9909 Год назад
The first thing that I as a fan of Dio take into consideration is that he NEVER spoke directly and clearly of the lyrics he composed. It's almost as if he hides his true inspirations and wants to make his work more "hermetic". The fact that the message is clearly ironic to me is revealed in the lines: "Don't hide in doorways You may find the key that opens up your soul" Note that the "poetic speaker" makes use of a superstition (Don't hide in doorways), at the risk of precisely freeing the soul (hermetic theme very common in Dio's lyrics).

Dio's singing is unrepeatable, there's no denying that. But I want to take a moment to appreciate how deep into music and singing Elizabeth is. Her mimics, her gestures, her excitement, the way she blinks rapidly when there's much to say but she can't find the words, the way she looks and laughs when she hears something unexpected! @@FreddieHg37 Actually, sadly, Dio was ripping Vivian off -- Dio made Viv sign an agreement to accept scale hired-gun pay and accept no writing royalties with a promise to modify that by the third album. Dio, under management of his wife, never did - so Vivian got screwed out of alot of money and never received writing royalties for any of his Dio work. He asked Dio to honor his original agreement, but Dio's management (wife) said "no, you are easily replaceable" and started this story that Vivian "thinks he's Ronnie's equal". He didn't at all, he was merely trying to get paid for his work and have Ronnie honor his original promise. Sadly, it didn't work out. At the time he quit he was only making like $600 a week while Ronnie was raking in millions with songs Viv helped write. He loved Ronnie and wanted to continue working with him, but he wasn't going to keep getting ripped off. Vivian has too much class to go dissing Ronnie, so he mostly kept his mouth shut on all these details until Ronnie died - he laid it out in an interview several years ago. People close to the situation say he's telling the truth and that Dio's wife has screwed multiple folks over the years in similar ways. Seems like it's another Sharon Osbourne situation.

@@joelinvirginia5198 I really hope your telling the truth about managemant/his wife, cause from what I've heard second hand Dio was the most lovely down to earth guy you could meet in that world, except maybe a few Maiden-artists. My dad had a story about a co-worker touching down with him after a gig in Gothenburg maybe 20-25 years ago, and he was SO down to earth and approachable, he bought beers all around and all the time almost acted like a he was just another fan.

The version from Holland in '83 is better. The guitarist, Doug Aldrich, said that Ronnie wasn't on top form for this tour because he had health problems. Even on an off day he's better than the majority at their best.

@@cango5679 Yes. He did have the flu and they wanted to delay the recording of this concert video, but due to costs associated with a possible delay they opted to go forward with the concert recording. It was unfortunate because it was the last opportunity to have a pro-shot concert with his solo band before he passed. It's still always inspiring to see his awesomeness, even when sick. The pro-shot Heaven and Hell shows from Radio City Music Hall and Waken on the other hand are amazing documents of his prowess up until the end.

@@cango5679 I was at Debaser as well as i live in Stockholm the gig there was apparently in 2008 though (Checked on Tapios Dio site) so it was a later tour than this, i saw him in KB in Malmö before that which may be an even smaller place than Debaser. First time i saw him live was on the Dream Evil tour in 1987 at Isstadion and quite few shows followed through the years. I remember having tickets for another Debaser show, but it was cancelled and it was at the time he got really sick and sadly passed later on. Rock In Peace Ronnie !

Opera and i think folk italian songs played a role. Beside opera , in our folk music , singers have a tendencies , men , as women to attack some notes , even in higher octaves , in Full voice , very confident . Dio high register are mainly in full voice as well .

Amazing record in my opinion, contains my most favourite versions of pretty much all of the songs they played. Great sound and his voice like you said seems to have even improved with age.
