Burt was lucky to find Dionne Warwick to be his voice for these songs. Ever hear Burt Bacharach sing, really bad, isn't it funny that someone so brilliantly musical can't sing.
This song is pure Warwick. When she was young and could hit the notes. Vandross though takes this song to a whole different dimension. Warwick and Vandross presented different styles on this song and both are beautiful. But this is a Dionne signature classic.
I think this was one of the prettiest songs Bacharach and David ever wrote. At the time, they pretty much were writing music with Dionne Warwick's voice in mind and her rendition of this song was absolutely perfect. No one else's version came close to hers. I was lucky enough to see her, when she was at the top of her game, and her voice, in person with just a single microphone, sounded as good as it did on her records.
I agree, but Dusty's live performance with Burt faking on the piano (and adding some horrible, out of tune singing of his own) is pretty wonderful in it's own way. Wish she had done a studio recording. I'm glad to have both versions, though it's Dionne's song.
There's no voice in the industry which sounds so fragile yet powerful as Ms. Dionne's. Her voice is like a thin snowflake crystal that easily breaks even with the softest wind blow.
Natural, authentic and emotive raw talent!!!!!. There is no one like dionne!!!. Out of all the Bacharach girls, she stands head and shoulders above the rest!.
This is my first time hearing her version. She absolutely rips your heart out with her passion! It's like she was really going through it when she sang this. I still like Luther's version a tiny bit better because of all he did with it, but, man! Dionne reached back and SANG this song!
Common sense on wheels Whattt, really??!!! She looked pretty and unique to me! I always thought her looks were a plus (in addition to her amazing singing)!
It just proof that beauty is in the eye of the beholder or in this case the lookers I like unique faces but this one nope needs more T& A to overcome da face
@@jonothandoeser And you are one of those toxic fans of Beyonce. She's an amazing vocalist but not our preference. You can never propel someone's credibility with such dumb obsession of yours. Leave us here. If you love or worship Beyonce then go build a statue of her in your room's corner and kneel down. We don't care!
Dionne version was a true jazz ballad. This is how jazz is sung powerful in the full not to much timbre. Luther showcased vocal talent in his tribute, he done almost everything a singer could do in a balled. Love em both #BlackExcellence
I love this song. And Dionne's performance is absolutely flawless. Superbly soulful delivery. Great memories, and such a consummate professional, with terrific musicians playing the fabulously arranged tune.KTF
Well said. Your description of her performance was so colorful and a pleasure to read. I love Dionne's version of this song the best. What a voice she had.
@@hrhjrd Burt and Hal composed this song with Dionne Warwick's voice in their mind and she was the first to record this in 1964. Ella Fitzgerald did a version in 1969. Dusty only made a version of it in 1970, just a decade earlier than Luther's version.
@@ProximaCentauri88 You are quite right. I miss heard the conversation between her and Burt when she said " ....five years ago...." from a special that was done for TV in 1970. Thank you for the correction.
THIS VERSION, THE ORIGINAL... is STILL the BEST. And I've heard the other versions...Instead of trying to use the song as a showcase for vocal acrobatics, DIONNE simply puts her HEART in this song ....and you can FEEL IT.
this should have like a billion views. this is real music. where can we find people that make stuff with this type of emotion behind. I get chills up and down my spine listening to this woman literally sings her heart out. Everybody wants be poppy, poppy
Now i truly know why luther vandross was so inspired to redo her song. What a beautiful tune. Luther's was good, but dionne's original can not be matched!!
"...I'm just not meant, to live alone, turn this house 🏠 into a home, when I climb the stair, and turn the key...Oh! Please be there...still in love, with me! 💙 Sheer poetry!
Another great one by the same writer, who wrote "Anyone who had a heart" was also sung by Warwick. The song writer said something about "all the musicians could not really accept the song, something about the unusual timing--whereas he says he played it for Warwick, who instantly accepted it-understood the timing and hit it first time. Real talent.
When this album was out I was a child of 4 and my mom passed away. I have been looking for years as to who sung this beautiful song. Although the memories are filled with pain and sorrow for me there is a soothing familiar reality to it. Her voice is wildly soothing to me ...
I had a very similar situation. My mother died when I was 10 and a few of the the popular songs at that time ("Walk Like a Man" and "Blue On Blue") are seared into my soul. When you are broken hearted, music finds such a deep place in you, and no one is more broken hearted than a child who has lost her mother.
No one can sing this song like she can because no one has a voice to keep it pure. they do all kind of strange stuff to it because they don't have the voice for it. My goodness she is something else. Still one of the greats.
Dionne does this bluesy masterpiece the very most justice -- my favorite by her (and I love nearly every hit she has ever had, so that's saying a lot).
iswhade so glad I have her albums she'll never sing like this again but I have the proof that she was quite a vocalist who brought life to the songs Burt Baccahrach wrote for her
Overall I'm down for Luther Vandross' version of this song but I just love Dionne Warwick's simplicity and clean interpretation of how she sings anything...it is just so refreshing. Many vocalist kill beautiful songs by doing way too much, and the songs lose their original essence.
There are several great versions of this and I wouldn't want to miss any of them. Always love to hear Luther again, and Sarah, Aretha, Anita Kerr, even Dusty sometimes. But Dionne has been my singer crush since early 60s, it hasn't changed, and this is one of the reasons.
Dionne really sings this song with such feeling and conviction, it really touches me! She was so beautiful and in her prime here. What a treat to watch! Thank you very much!
Good days or bad days, just listen to DW and you just fly on cloud nine....you can just close your eyes and just imagine the days with your family!!!!!
A genius indeed. Rest in Peace: Burt Bacharach. Was in high school and college when he teamed up with Dionne Warwick who Burt discovered when she was a backup singer for the Drifters in 1962. Dionne was the perfect singer for many of his hits back then. Dionne nailed this song doing it better imho than any other singer to this day! After all these years I till gets chills watching Dionne sing A House Is Not Home.
