The Dire Straits sound is unmistakable and yet each of their songs is completely different and unique.

As a band these guys are just outstanding. never seen a better live concert than Alchemy tour

So underrated this song, 1 of their best so stunning when he goes into the chorus its total rock n roll heaven for me. the album 'Making Movies' is a masterpiece imo

Loved that song in 1980 and love it now. This has to one of the most underrated songs of all time. For die hard DS and MK fans, this seems to be a favorite. Mark lyrics effortlessly flow to a solid beat. It seems the MK and Pick Withers are the backbone and everyone else hooks right in tune. MK's guitar is innovative combining hints of other influences that coalesce into the tune.

I have to admit that I didn't know this one. And I heard Dire Straits since I was a teenager. Great great song. Mark is a strings magician. Way 2 go, Becks. Keep it up.

The "Makin' Movies" album was one song away from being perfection. IMHO it's their best, even better than their self-titled debut.

I listened to So far away as the first song of Dire Straits in a radio program when I was at class 9 (1984) and then listened to "Money for Nothing" when it reached the billboard top chart but I fell in love with this band 3-4 years later after watching "Alchemy Live" in a VHS tape. Man ! Along with few friends of mine I started listening to all albums of Dire Straits, the sound tracks and solo albums done by Knopfler and also the collaborations Mark has done with many renowned artists. He's a phenomenal guitarist and a prolific song writer with deep feelings and emotions.

So Great seeing a younger generation discovering all the Great Bands I grew up on! Keep it Going!

Making Movies is one of my favorite albums and I have heard this song many times. I could swear this was the studio version. The clapping/laughter at the end sounds unnatural too. I still enjoyed the reaction though!

Fantastic use of mostly hi-hat & bass drum with periodic punctuated snare spikes during the verses. And of course that signature DS chanting and tasteful Strat picking!

Always immaculate musicianship and so distinctive. I think they’re really a 70’s band who just go there a little late 😂

This was the original incarnation of the band, with Mark's brother David on rhythm guitar. As we know so often in bands with brothers, it's not always sweetness & light, & not everyone was quite enjoying it as much.

Such a great song! One of many by a great band led by an amazing artist. Only negative in that video was the song had to be shortened some b/c of that tv show's time constraints.

Hi Rebeka, so im from uk, and just discovered you channel, i was very impressed with your summary of this Dire Straits song, ive been very lucky heaving got to see them in concerts 3 times, just unforgettable experience. I have a song recommendations for you that shows a more cinematic side to them that will just have focused on the song it called PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS. Id also like to draw your attention to another artist whos work is also very similar at time s to Marks styles, his name is Chris Rea. Hes an excellent songwriter, story teller and has great guitarist, and has been around for a long time with a huge body of works, but a starting block id recommend THE ROAD TO HELL full version its in 2 parts and most people who play this are very impressed

This song was released in December of 1980 while i was in Basic Training in the Army. When I think back to my Basic Training days, this song is parrt of those memories. So, was, "Same Old Lang Syne", by Dan Fogelberg, that was, what I consider to this day, a Christmas and New Years song that was released in November of 1980 the month I started Basic. Same Old Lang Syne has been such a favorite memory of those early Army days for me that when I found out that Dan Fogelberg died on December 16, 2007, i made an oath to myself to try to watch and listen to Same Old Lang Syne on youtube every December 24th and every New Years Eve into New Years, just before the Ball drops and since 2007 i have not missed a one. I make doing that my New Years celebration. A single song tied to an event that happened many years ago can be as special, and have as much sentimental value, as an heirloom, picture or video. So, maybe you will react to Dan Foglebergs Same Old Lang Syne someday as it is a real story about him and an old high school friend he met years later in a small grocery store. You can even find stories of this and who the girl is and her side of the story online too. I don't want to say too much about it to give it away, but I think you will like it.

Howdaya not like that, Huh? The more of Dire Straits you hear, the more you want to hear. Mark has a way with arranging the music that is just different and very appealing.

Please check out Mark Knopfler's main theme from the 1983 movie "Local Hero", called "Going Home". Dire Straits would often close concerts with it.

Mark loves telling stories. Some of his solo work are obvious and historical, such as "Sailing to Philadelphia" about Mason and Dixon. Then "Song for Sonny" which relate the sad life of Sonny Liston and how his was mishandled. "Done with Bonaparte" which relates a soldiers view of the last disaster period of Napoleon's rule. Some of Marks songs are not so graphic and he says he doesn't like to explain them as it can ruin them. You might try "Lights of Taormina". Get the tissues out for a couple of songs "Brothers in Arms" which is a powerful anti war song and maybe "If this is Goodbye" which Mark wrote after 9/11. Could go on for ever but I shall leave it there.

Mark's vocal style is like Lou Reed, only way better songs.

I would recommend you single handed sailor it is a hidden pearl and the live verdion is much better than the studio version, but thi is a common thing with the music od DS/MK.
