In this workshop project build, I do some manual machining on the Bridgeport and the South Bend to create a mortar and pestle with 2 sides on the mortar. I needed to make this mortar and pestle in order to feed the new baby chickens because I only had adult food. I hope you enjoy this mortar and pestle build - xo

When I first started watching RU-vid a few years ago .I used to watch a lot of makers . But they got boring same stuff every week . Now it's down to 4 channels. You being at the top of the list .Because every week something different ...WOOD ,BRASS,STEEL,PLASTIC,LEATHER,....Always something New and interesting.. You can also use a boring head to do this. If you use a left handed cutter turned inward on the boring head with the dividing head tilted at an angle, you can cut convex/spherical shapes as well.

That slow-mo of the fly cutter is super cool. A texture in the base of the Mortar makes grinding a lot easier for coarse grains etc.

I had a brown egg layer that earned herself the name "protector chicken". Every summer the Rhode Island reds would go broody and they would get angry if you were near the eggs. Protector chicken would come running from where ever she was, and get between me and the reds. She would then bite them to keep me safe. She was about 1/3 their weight.

Reminds me of my "Machine Shop" classes in HS along with the hot shards of metal. Only i remember having 4 jawed chucks and we would take forever to try to get it centered..!!! "Bite size Daddy...bite size!!"

Aluminum or aluminium , is a bad choice my dude .Never mind how soft it is , it also will leave a lot of aluminum in what ever you gring in this and it will end up in your food . You do not want aluminum in your food .High concentration of alumin causes dementia , memmory loss and other brain degenerative issues .

It's unlikely that this mortar and pestle will transfer any significant amounts to what he's grinding in it. The only real concerns are wil alu cookware and even then only when you cook acidic stuff like tomatoes in it.

@@markkalsbeek5883 Maybe not in a single use, but prolonged use over time can be a problem. I agree with the original commenter, aluminium is a poor choice for this application, because the grinding action of a mortar and pestle guaranteed that some aluminium will makes its way into the food

It's alright for chicken feed. Gives them aircraft grade aluminum frames, so they can fly better. And, if the don't lay golden eggs, they won't live long enough to go crazy.

Brilliant design. Loved it!! And - inspired by your project notebook - I got a leather wrapped notebook from my sister and instantly thought of you. So now, instead of drawing my tool DIY's on a piece of scrap paper and throwing these away - I'm using that notebook. It's a mach nicer way to keep ideas and things you want to do... THANKS!

That's something I've never seen before, using a hand held drill to power that setup (whatever it's called) to make a sort of lathe, while using the mill for cutting. No arguing with the results, what a nice mortar and pestle. There are easier ways to break down those pellets of chicken food, but I like this method better.

That particular thing in the setup is called a dividing head. Functions similar to a rotary table, or a rotary 4th axis if youre more familiar with the CNC world. Unrelated, but you can use a similar setup with a boring head in the mill spindle to turn a sphere

Tip from Clickspring - acetone dissolves superglue... so once done it's a simpler and easier manner of removing it. Just soak for a few hours. Used it myself and it works wonderfully.
