😓🤔To be knowledgeable about disasters can save your life. During the 2004 Indonesian Tsunami, a young English Girl observed and remembered from geography class that rapidly retreating waves 🌊 meant a Tsunami was coming. But her own parents were incredulous and most non-English people around her had no clue what she was screaming warnings about. BUT. A Japanese man heard her warnings, recognized the word “Tsunami” and realized she was right! He was able to shout warnings that more people understood. Plus with the Japanese man’s excitement the Girls parents realized there was danger! Both saved lives as a result. People think my love of disasters is “weird”. I say knowledge is power. To remember past disasters and what caused them, so you can recognize the warning signs of impending danger!

I constantly see people asking for episodes on other disasters. What should be understood is that this series is an old Canadian series that they have found and are re-publishing for educational purposes.

The story of the Vulturno is puzzling. The fire lasted a LONG time. There are references to the fire fully involving the ship below deck, yet clearly their was significant containment of the flames to keep the stern and the hull protected even from radiant heat and explosions. A large enough section of the ship to protect over 500 people until the next morning. Given the wooden decks and interiors of the vessel, and the large quantity of liquid fuels on board, I am amazed that anyone on board survived the smoke and radiant heat. I can only guess that the explosions vented the fire enough to prevent it getting hot enough to completely destroy the ship in a few hours. Talk about die hard.

I’m from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and I live about 30 miles from Sengenhydd where the 1913 mining disaster occurred... Its still the biggest mining disaster in British history.

Audio for video is too low to hear but lucky for us the ads that play every 90 seconds come through LOUD and CLEAR. Must be some kind of record for most commercials in 45 minutes.

Well done like all of your videos except this is the first of your videos that I found a minor fault with. Easy enough to fix in future videos though: A heavy Welsh accent is hard enough to understand for English speakers not accustomed to it; even worse for those where English was not their native tongue. Add to that, background music that was simply too loud compared to the narrative volume for the Welsh mine disaster portion of this video. I tried turning on the cc function but it couldn't make out the Welsh accent either and produced gibberish English text. I've seen many other videos, including yours, where a heavy accent is subtitled. That's what you needed here for the Welsh speakers, as well as toning down the background music for that whole segment. But that aside, thanks for this and your other fine videos.

Throughout human history, regulations and legislation governing health and safety, fire safety, safety at sea and in the air have all in effect been written in the blood and on the broken bodies of people whose lives have been so needlessly lost. Imagine the sheer terror of the passengers aboard the RMS Titanic when they realised that their beautiful floating palace had left port without enough lifeboats for those on board and that their vessel was sinking! Often, regulators have shown the same callous disregard for the safety and well-being of employees as their companies do, until the next huge, totally avoidable loss of lives occurs and the following public outrage forces changes! People mock health and safety rules without actually comprehending the tragic reasons that made them necessary in the first place!

I don’t know how many times I’ve gone through this series. I have a thing for disaster documentaries. Along with BDHQ’s “DOT20C”, I love “The World’s Worst Disasters” & “Desperate Hours”. Both series have 13 episodes, but “The World’s Worst Disasters” run about an hour, and “Desperate Hours” run about a half hour. Highly recommend watching them as well. Thanks for sharing this well made series.

I think I posted this before, but, I think they picked the best man for the narrator’s job. I’m a big Disasters of the Century fan and watcher on my smart tv. I stay up all night watching these episodes.

This show and other informative disaster documentarys should be mandatory viewing for school kids. Get them onto common dangers quickly and young! More important than calculus anyways 😂

If the crew members were disgruntled about their wages, I could think of FAR better ways to recoup the difference. Steal the silverware, or rob the ship's safe... certainly not setting the ship on fire!

My great grandfather was a Welsh Coal shipping Oligarch from the late nineteen hundreds to the early twentieth century. Apparently he was good friends with King Edward VII. Not sure if that is something to be proud of now after watching this documentary. Hmmm

Wonderful documentary, but this one the volume is too low. I'm at max., and... Plus, the appropriate Welsh accent & under-enunciated speaking make it even more difficult.

Just trying to work out what difference or relevance the position of the Titanic sinking had to do with this disaster, 600 miles, even in the Atlantic isn’t close, Titanic sunk because of hitting an iceberg not a fire in the hold, Titanic was a “unsinkable” luxury liner, this vessel was what I would describe as a “Tramp Steamer”, so as far as I can tell the only two similarities are 1) they both sank and 2) they were both in the Atlantic. The Aber valley disaster was another example of industrialists like mine owners putting profit before people. Still an interesting documentary, thanks for sharing. 😁👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

It’s abismal to think they blamed the mine manager when all the blame should have accrued to the owner- who did not take action to follow guidelines created for safety. Hopefully he’s able to think on it in the hell pit he’s rotting in.

If the sea was calm and sprinklers were installed above the spot where the fire, the SS Volturno would stay stable and everybody would calmly head to the ship's deck and board the lifeboats and float to the rescue ships and no one would be killed.

An old saying of the sea. God and Weather permitting. It wouild have bene nice if the English Train had shown English trains and the narrators had English acents. If a coal fire spits, a miner had dies. At the time in South Wales unless five or more miners died in an incident, it wasn't seven officially recorded as an acident. By the by the house the miner walked away from? You'd never find a place like that in South Wales colliery villiage.

This would probably be much better if it could be heard....100% is nothing when dealing with you tube ......The political ads are just LOUD!!!!!! Wonder if the big$$ has anything to do with it ;o)
