I loved them then and am so glad you decided to continue posting because they are absolutely the best documentaries around. The Empire State Building was built right! Unfortunately, the old Twin Towers had some serious flaws in their construction. The new one is much more sturdy. Then again, The Empire State Building Wasn’t hit by two Boeing 767 passenger aircraft coming at it at full throttle. May the victims of this tragedy and the tragedy of September 11, rest in peace.

So true. Global and individual tragedies. I worked for an older couple in Western Australia, they had lived previously in South Africa. In SA they had a large farm and had a small plane that he flew. One day he went out in the small plane and noticed some weather on the horizon. He landed on another rural public airport and walked to the control tower to ask about what the weather was going to do, the direction, the wind etc. This was in the late 50s early 60s and let’s just say that this man was a big supporter of the dreadful Apartheid “system” in that country. When he told me this story he used awful racist language which I won’t repeat, but an African man, employed in this small rural airport control tower began to warn him not to continue his flight, that he should and could wait in the tower or the small airport building for the weather to pass. Being arrogant and dismissive, he immediately ignored the warnings and thinking that he knew better, got back in his small plane and continued his flight. Long story short, he took off, was overcome by the storm, the wind got hold of his plane and in a remote field he crashed. Somehow he survived, was in a coma for months and eventually awoke with serious, life changing brain injuries. He was never the same, his children lost the father they had known and his wife became his care giver. She described it as like looking after a total stranger that looked like her husband. All because he thought that he knew best, was superior and wouldn’t take advice. Advice that would have saved so much pain and heartache in the decades that followed.

Absolutely top notch video. I learned so much more about this accident that I knew before. This reminds me of a flight I was on, landing at LaGuardia when I worked in NYC many years ago. I had a window seat on the left side of the plane. We flew parallel to Manhattan over the Hudson River north to south. Perfectly clear day and the view was incredible. You may not believe this but as the Empire State Building came into view I thought of this accident. The old saying, "They don't build'em like that anymore", is so true. Thanks so much for all the effort you put into this video.

My son and I had just moved from the east coast to the west coast and were still getting used to the time change, sleeping late. I used to listen to the radio at night and would sometimes wake up, listen to the news for awhile, then go back to sleep. On 9/11, I woke up hearing a report that a plane had gone into one of the World Trade towers. I immediately thought of the plane going into the Empire State so long ago and wondered how this accident would be handled with modern technology, etc. Then I fell back asleep, only to wake up later to the terrible news of 9/11.

Saturday, July 28th, 1945 is kind of a precursor to Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 in a sad way. Except it was the lighter built Twin Towers being DELIBERATELY being targeted at almost 600MPH by 757/767 jumbo jets instead of accidentally by a B-25 going 200 MPH. Thanks for putting this up, I know some people who need to see this!

equarg if you know any pilots, as I know several, they will tell you planes can't fly at 600 miles per hour at that altitude. please explain building #7. nothing hit that building and if you knew what or shall I say who was housed there you might know building 7 could survive a fire, not fall free fall. Also out of his own mouth, Silverstein, said he made the decision to "just pull it." Also the passengers in the 3 planes are NOT listed in the Social Security Death Index. the oy people who are listed in the SSDI are those who died in the building. And, yes, once one dies their Social Security number, their name, birth and death date are all public material. now please explain that.

Similarly, I friend of mine lost a 90-year-old relative the other day, run over in car car accident caused by the driver being so determined to get to his destination on time, and SO confident in his ability that he didn't bother to scrape the ice off more than a little square of his windscreen. He's very sorry that she's dead, but it's too late to be sorry, isn't it? It looks as if this pilot got over-confident in his abilities and over-eager to get to his destination no matter what. Pilots nowadays have it drilled into their brains that no matter how confident they are or determined to get to where they're going, they CAN'T breach protocol. (Car drivers are another matter).

I never knew this terrible tragedy happened. I was riveted to my seat watching this and feeling an almost overwhelming sadness. I have true respect for our armed forces, because of those brave souls we are free. At the end of the day, orders are orders and those orders are to be followed to the letter. That said, this was not an accident: The pilot/soldier was given specific flight orders which he did not obey. The result was absolutely needless and deadly. Such a shame that so many people were killed all because fairly simple orders were not followed.

Bomber with a full load of fuel and the building is still there sort of condemns modern building practices
@matekochkoch
@matekochkoch 4 года назад
Difficult to say. The B 25 is much smaller than the B757 or B767 which hit the WTC. Allso it's tanks were mostly empty since it was at the end of it's flight. And it's max speed is less than half of modern jet planes. Allso the fuel has very differnt properties than jet fuel. So we compare an incident with an 9t plane with mostly empty tanks to a nearly fully tanked jet with a weight of over 100t at probably 3 times the speed. Fuel for the b 25 used to be very high octane petrol which most likely has been used up mostly in in the explosion on impact. causing a short but extrem hot fire. Jet fuel is much less explosive it is more like heating oil, than like petrol.It burns longer but not that hot and has a greater energy density than petrol. In the end this and 9/11 are two very differnt incidents which are not comareable.
@lhaviland8602
@lhaviland8602 4 года назад
@@matekochkoch An engineering study was done which found that the ESB would survive a 767 impact. Yes, jetliners are larger and faster, but are also weaker/ lighter than a bomber. And anyways, the WTC initially survived the impacts themselves just fine structurally. The problem was that they were not reinforced everywhere with a "lattice" of girders like the ESB, and the (poorly installed) fireproofing was knocked off by the shock, meaning that the fire could weaken the already endangered supports to the point of collapse. Also, the fire was mostly fueled by burning paper/ carpet/ etc. which actually burn hotter than jet fuel. Something like 95% of the fuel actually burned off in the initial fireball.

She lived in a 3rd floor apartment building about a block away from the Empire State Building. That morning she had gone to work, but did not feel very well and decided to go home and rest. As soon as she entered her apartment, she laid down on the sofa to rest a minute before undressing and getting into bed. Her view out the window was that of the Empire State Building's upper half. She was looking at the building when suddenly a plane flew right into it. She jumped up, and since she was still fully dressed, she decided to go over there and take a closer look. When she arrived, there were military uniform buttons all over the street, plus shoes and clothing that had blown off the crew upon impact. She and others began picking up all the buttons for souvenirs. She said she had those buttons for years.

@Kathy Williams How do you use lying and laying in a sentence? A PERSON is doing the action of lying down. Therefore, to lie (down) is something you DO, whereas you LAY down something an OBJECT, not yourself. Lay is a transitive verb, meaning it needs a direct object for the action to be performed on. Lie is an intransitive verb, meaning it does not take a direct object for the action. You LAY an object on the bed, but a person LIES on the bed. I always remembered this when I majored in English, by remembering it is always PEOPLE that LIE, but OBJECTS only LAY. Hope this clears it up for you.

this is strange this building at the time survived a plane crash and stayed up but more modern buildings like the twin towers and a building that wasn't hit come down at free-fall speed
@lhaviland8602
@lhaviland8602 4 года назад
The ultimate irony is that the WTC buildings actually _were_ designed with this incident in mind. Unfortunately, the design that they came up with was fatally flawed. Even a "small" plane like this likely would've brought them down. Meanwhile, the ESB was never designed with anything like this in mind, and preformed perfectly. Studies have even shown that it would probably survive a 757 size jet.

Does anyone know the accurate version of Betty Lou Oliver's story? This video says that she was sitting on the floor of the elevator singing to herself when the accident occurred and the elevator plunged. However, other online news accounts report that she was knocked from the elevator when the accident occurred and after being treated by paramedics, was placed in a 2nd elevator to be evacuated to the first floor when that elevator plunged to the ground with her in it.
@loriepaix6391
@loriepaix6391 4 года назад
It's a fascinating story either way, but I have read the newspaper report where she describes the fall. She claims to have been conscious throughout and there is no mention of any ejection or treatment or subsequent elevator. Also, in the report concerning the investigation by the elevator company, it states that all 6 cables of her car were severed as a result of the crash and the car fell into the sub-basement. There is no mention of any rescue or transfer to a second elevator. Certainly, somewhere along the line the rescue story was introduced and is even mentioned in her obituary. When interviewed later in life, she did not want to talk about it, saying that the publicity embarrassed her. I believe it's possible that the story got embellished over time and since she did not discuss it with her family, the truth got muddled. I would lean towards believing her own report rather than the sensational rescue story. Here are my doubts: There was power failure in the building... would the elevators even have worked? If she was being treated for burns and lowered, why was she alone? It seems unlikely at best. Let me know what you think... and take care!

ESB was not like modern buildings built to be light with external supports. Sounds like a stab at the World Trade Center. Buildings like the Empire State Building were just to expensive to build. Limestone exterior with a brick wall behind it. WOW! Can you imagine what that weighed?

Pride comes before a fall. Too cocky. Shame. The arrogance of one harms so many innocents. Wow, shame they don’t build skyscrapers like that today. I watched the Twin Towers from just after it initially happened till the end and I knew after the second fire took hold that the towers were going to come down. Intense heat and steel. A bad mix. Once the steel melted and top caved in that weight would bring the lot down. I think the worst part for me was hearing the rhythmic thumping outside the ground floor of the 1st tower of people who were jumping to their death. Till the fall of the 1st building that thumping never stopped. Terrible.

Please do. I would definitely love to see a reenactment of how everything before, during, and after the Iroquois Theater Fire happened. Plus, you could interview descendants of the survivors and those who were killed at the fire. Same thing on the Happy Land Fire (March 25, 1990) where you could interview Ruben Valladares, Lidia Feliciano, the firemen who put the fire out, and the victims' families about the event.

But the building didnt come down. Shows how architecture was made with higher quality material instead of cutting corners and saving money. New an improved is definitely a misnomer in many cases. The Twin Towers made of solid stone wouldn't have crumpled up like a paper bag if they had done thAt.
