Very similar to drum bus chain I use SSL six mixer with a fixed ratio G bus compressor, Oxford inflator, saturn 2 or decapitator (track depending), smooth operator ( very good cheaper option to soothe 2) and finally just a stock ableton limiter.
Hey, so do you create this chain on a return channel then blend in the gain or do you stick the chain on your drum group? I can create a groove but struggling to gel the drums cohesively and this chain may help?
@@birchuk1416 careful Gain staging of your drum sounds followed bus comp ratio 4:1 slow attack and quick release will get your drums to gel . Only a few dB required, 3db tops Commit this to audio . Then apply saturation, subtle alway best start point . This will spread some harmonics of each drum sound so that they over lap ever so slightly to really gel your sounds. Won't overlap too much if subtle but just enough so your drum bus sounds like it's coming through the main out of a hardware drum machine. That's why I send my stems from ableton through a mixer and back again as your sound gets better melded together through a mixer . Mackie will do or similar - don't need an ssl mixer like mine You can always then duplicate this audio track heavily compress it and blend to taste. The other fx like inflator are just to increase perceived loudness without destroying the signal
@@sh-kw2ox appreciate this! So as a simple approach should I apply the chain effects to the grouped drum tracks or apply them to a return channel and send the drum tracks group to the return? Or does it not matter. Thanks for the help.
@@birchuk1416 I always do a group drum bus. Many effects have dry/wet control anyway so your cam paralell process that way. Return send are only really for things like reverb where you might want some drum sounds sound like they're reverberating in the same space

Many producers mix the kick together with the bass, others like you here shown in the vid as part of the drum buss. Do you always prefer to mix the kick in the drum buss and why?
@@roberthanzl8294 I use Logic Pro x. My sub and kick are gettobg compressed within a bus channel with the R compressor, my drums are getting processed within a group (Bus) channel.

any idea why he choses a Limiter over a clipper? since the whole track gets limited later on, doesn't that kill all the dynamics when applying ProL2 on drum bus already?
When I don’t watch these vids my percussion sounds pretty good. After…….absolute rubbish. There is so much more to making percussion sound punchy and rhythmic than just importing and sequencing drums. The bar is set so high now. You need everything and a good ear.
What's up with the compressor on Oxford Dynamics? Love everything else on there. Goes on drum buss, instrument buss and masterbuss, but never use the compressor. Kinda sucks balls.
@@joncaistermusic Yeah, that's what I was waiting for too - how does the end result sit in the mix? I do appreciate the added saturation but wouldn't use 6 plugins for that.
That Eq curve on the Pro Q had a ton of high end on the display, quite the opposite of the fletcher munson curve. Any idea what he was going for with this approach? Also each plugin he engaged introduced issues he had to fix later? I'm confused to say the least. The drums most def punch but I wouldn't call them fat. They def do sound better though.
The adjustments in pro q 3 were for the hats. He took some resonance out of the hats and added a little more air. The logic's eq adjustments were just small adjustments to the snare or clap. and about the "fixes", he was just fine-tuning everything he did on the drum bus.
When I compress the whole drum bus (kick and percussions mixed together) and the and the hi hats are playing on their own their sound goes way up. Why is this?
Yes, Waves also has the api bus compressor and oxford plugins are not uad exclusive. As for the tape machine you could use magnetite by Black Rooster Audio
is it bad that i cant hear the tape glue? lol. I only hear the kick getting a bit louder. Or is "glue" the snare having a small ring before the transient? edit: nvm i heard it lol. Now i know what "glue" is.

@@SolStateMusic I used to do that but because of the big amount of energy and frequency the kick has, the compressor always started working hard so fast. Now I'm doing everything except the kick in a bus but I'm still not satisfied with my drum game haha

Guys, forgive me for being a total dimwit.. but WTF does he do at 1:11 to get that kick? I see him configure the compression, but at at 1:11ish when the kick comes to the fore, he doesn't appear to click anything other than pausing and hitting play?????
Yeah.....programmed drums lol but what about a real drum kit recording with 8 tracks, blasting double bass and fast tom fills etc.? where's that drum mix fatttener, punchyer video?
Yeah, they sound flat and boring too. Would like to have seen an EQ being used before all that compression/saturation/limiting. I guess the mixing engineer will take care of that.
