Hi there, Melinda. Great video as always:) I believe that Garth is the best-selling solo artist in the US, but when you take the whole world into consideration, I am pretty sure that Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley are still ahead of him:) Because contrary to Garth, they also have sold a lot of records outside the US:) Anyway, take care and keep up with the wonderful videos !
Brooks is the best selling country artist but like you said Elvis is the best selling male artist of all time which makes me very happy. Thanks for setting the record straight and I apologize for the error.
@@MelindaMurphy it's not an error at all, Melinda. And you have nothing to apologize for because when I see the scope of your collection and music knowledge, I am truly humbled. I wish you a very good day and bless you and yours:)
At this point, discogs has done as much harm to the vinyl community as it has done good. It's a good resources for learning about certain pressings and cataloging your own collection; but the prices on the marketplace are bogus. They are volatile and based on arbitrary inflation and opportunistic greed. The ppl defending the prices with lame platitudes of "supply vs demanad" are misguided. Now, ppl are looking at their collections as a hedge fund portfolio instead of as just a collection. These ppl will be sorely disappointed. I think the market on a lot the over hyped stuff that sells for a ton will fall out hard in due time. I find it hard to believe that EVERY record under the sun is automatically worth 50-100%% more than MSRP the second it sells out or is out of print. Discogs is basically in incubator of greedy ppl taking advantage of impulsive ppl with fomo. If you can see through the BS and are patient, you will be rewarded. The vinyl market will crash 2008 style when the rest of economy tanks in the next couple years. Collectable markets bottom out during recessions. The discgs marketplace is just a a giant speculation bubble. It's disgusting that a bunch of greedy adults are hoarding Taylor Swift records and pricing out her young fanbase just cuz they can. Sadly, greed has ruined this hobbie for many people.
The MARKET PLACE is a market place. Discogs essentially provides which edition you might have, and claiming to own one and therefore selling at that price point, opens the vendor to internet fraud. I got a Half-speed master, when it was supposed to be a DBX copy. (The vendor worked with me, and comped me a copy of Supertramp's Even in the quietest Moments. We called it even.)😊
@@stevebird9510 That’s ‘vinyl’ As for your theory, it hasn’t proven true yet, so far one can really cash in on vinyl sales. It may be different in the future.
Went to see Taylor Swift in Philly with Mt daughter on mothers day..hands down one of if not thee best concerts I have ever been to..she played for 3.5 hrs straight extremely talented woman for sure!!
I read in the Economist magazine that Taylor Swift - and her team-were somewhat responsible for the Ticketmaster problem. They claimed she was greedy- she tried to sell the most tickets at one time than anyone before her. The system was overwhelmed. I like Swift but I’d rather go to a Pink or Kelly Clarkson concert. But I’m going to get Clarkson ‘s new album on CD.
The up’s and downs of record prices. The inability to afford some records. The inability to find some records. The anticipation of a repress. The eventual repress and affordability. The digging and the finding. All of these things are paramount to record collecting. If we could easily afford and obtain everything we want then this would be no different than downloading and streaming. The fun of collecting is the hunt. Let’s not advocate for a poachers lifestyle. ❤
Well said! You brought up some excellent points. I love the hunt as well. Sadly, so many of my viewers are really hurting financially and they are having to stop buying vinyl. I just wish we could go back to how things were 4 years ago when we didn't have inflation. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I agree! It is becoming harder and harder to justify prices and I'm sure that is discouraging a lot of collectors. Hopefully the pendulum will swing back as the secondary market will become flooded with all these new records in the years to come.
Higher prices do suck, but it is what it is. What pisses me off more than higher prices is crap quality. About 50-70% of new records are complete crap.. warps, surface noise, non-fill, off center, pops/clicks, and on and on and on. If you are going to charge $40 for a single LP, it better be damn near perfect
I agree. That's also a big problem. I do think they are aware of the problems and the food companies are trying to fix that. It is very frustrating to get a damaged record. Thank you and take care.
Records are meant to be played not collected. I never bought into this high price collector craziness. The good news is that for people who want to hear the music there are many ways to hear it that don't cost an arm and leg. It's all become so silly. These things are like NFT's. Just speculative investments b/c there is a part of our market driven capitalist society that wants to turn everything into a speculative investment so someone can make $. It has nothing to do with the music. That is why they buy it and don't even play it or open it. Late stage capitalism.
I agree. so much of the current vinyl market is just a speculative bubble that will inevitably burst in due time. Remember the beanie baby craze of 90's?
I do open and play all of my records too. 😀 I wish the prices could stay low on all of these fantastic records so everyone can have them and play them. Thank you so much! I appreciate your input.
Yep. Actual music and audio fans are being sucker punched by selfish losers with too much money on their hands who own things just for the sake of owning them.
I do like the point you're making. The original price was for a new record and now it's used but I would never complain about a $4 record. That's a great deal. I agree that new records are about where they should be price wise. Thank you and take care.
Hi, Melinda, it's disappointing that the price of records have raised exorbitantly. I never even thought that the price of records would be so expensive. It has gotten to the point, that there are records that are not available to collectors. The one thing that has crossed my mind, is that with the exorbitant prices of records and limited availability of records, is this--are we record collectors being discouraged from buying and listening to records? Ok, I may be wrong with that line of thinking, but it has crossed my mind. As for Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2, I have the original pressing of that record, and yes, it's a very clean copy. The price of records, do indeed, need to come down big-time, so that way, everyone in the vinyl community can buy records. When Hills Deparment store was open, that was the store, where I bought my records. The price for records, was very reasonable and Hills had a great selection of records. I also used to buy my records, at National Record Mart. We need to get back to the reasonable prices of records that you had back at that time. With the exorbitant prices of records, people are not buying records as we have been, it makes me wonder, how are indie record stores able to stay open for business. Record prices need to come down big-time, plain and simple. Take care, Alan
I remember Hill's Department Store. ♥️ That's where I saw the Thriller video for the first time. I can understand the price of new records for the most part. The price for the materials has risen substantially. The used market is the one that frustrates me. The common records are so expensive now. Thank you and take care.
Record buying has become more a collector's hobby than a way to build a music collection and that's OK. I'm sure most music lovers will opt for standard copies & CDs of their favorites with maybe a small handful of collectibles on their shelves. I'm on Universal's mailing list & I just bought a brand new reissue of the GoGo's *Vacation* for $8.00 on pink vinyl. So fun stuff is still out there. (Who doesn't love a bargain?)
Wow! What a deal on that Go Fo's album. ♥️ Several people have said that they are buying more CD'S now so I think what you're saying is probably true. Thank you and take care.
Melinda, the main take away from all of this is very simple: Cost and Worth are two very different things. What is something worth to you personally? If someone really truly wants something and perhaps it might be their only shot, they're going to pay for it. The price might be high but it's more worth it for the buyer to have that record in their collection then the money they spent on that record in their pocket.
Discogs is marketplace and does not control prices. Sellers set the price and buyers are willing to pay the high prices. I don’t use Discogs because my security software blocks malware almost ever time I access the site. After 20 years of active collecting, I slowed down my purchases when my collection went over 1000 records. That may not seem like an excessive amount, but I my listening room is only 10’ x 13’. I don’t have room for many more.
Another great video, Melinda! Your excellent points remind me of how glad I am that I bought most of my favorite music some 30-35 years ago @ $0.50 - $5.00 per LP. Back in the 80's kids were bringing bags of their parents LPs in to trade for A single CD. I snapped up as many as I could afford.
First off, I apologize for the delayed response. Yes, I sure wish I had started collecting vinyl back at that time. It must have been so fun to buy records at next to nothing prices. Thank you and take care.
YES...ABSOLUTELY SPLENDID...U Now Have The Vintage Classic FREDDIE HUBBARD/Red Clay...YAY MELINDA...U Have A Musical There!!... I Had It In On 8Track Tape Then Later Cassette...SO Happy For U...The Title Track Is Marvelous... Congratulations Indeed...
As a long time vinyl collector who lived through the vinyl dump days in the 1990’s. I find this pretty amazing that a formerly discontinued medium could become so valuable. I guess like rare comic books, vinyl is no longer considered a guilty pleasure, but a great investment!!🤑💰💵
We'll see if it becomes a great investment. Old and rare records will definitely keep their value. All of these reissues are probably not going to. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I would just remind everyone to collect for enjoyment. Never for investment. There are certain artists that will remain, but many of them will eventually go away and probably make some of our current records worthless to most people. Collect for listening, but probably not for retirement.
Melinda, another great video. I visited four record stores in the KC area this last week, I walked out not buying anything in any of them. I mostly have everything I want, and I find myself not wanting to pay the price for the items I don’t have. And yes, I’ve bought some cd’s for a fraction of the cost of the vinyl. I’ve also had fleeting thoughts of doing a significant purge to my collection while prices are so high, but my wife talked me out of it.
It would be tempting to sell while the prices are high but I am still loving my records. So many people have said that they are buying more CD'S. That's a very interesting development. 🤔 Thank you for your input. Take care.
Great video Melinda, and you are absolutely right, discogs and what people are paying for records is a travesty! It’s a shame that the young fans of Taylor swift cannot afford her aftermarket vinyl. I too, have slowed down in buying vinyl, it’s just getting too expensive.
It's a shame that the secondary market is continuing to charge so much money for records. They definitely deserve a profit but the prices can be just insane. Thank you and take care.
Discogs is not a store, it’s a market of people from all over the world, the shipping varies as much as there’s sellers there.. there’s no way you can make a blanket statement about shipping costs on Discogs.
Some sellers will offer free shipping if you spend a certain amount. That helps sometimes. 😀 The shipping does add to the expense. Thank you and take care.
I have totally lost inte4rest in vinyl because of the crazy pricing. even the local thrift places are getting ridiculous I will just enjoy what I have and maybe it will get better.
Vinyl is no longer affordable for people on a modest income and the high prices have certainly put off young people. I no longer buy vinyl and am enjoying cds more than ever now.
Just wanna say I love The 'In Groove T-shirt. I go there about once a year, when I visit my dad in Phoenix. Dropped a ton of money, when I was there last summer. The Bobby D mono box was a steal, when I picked it up from Amazon, a couple of years ago. Take care, and enjoy the rest of the week.
True...When I Purchased FREDDIE HUBBARD/Red Clay Around 1979/1980~I Paid $1 For The 8Track Tape & And Later The Cassette At DollarGeneral...The Record LP Was Around $3 At Either Woolco Woolworth's Or KMart...
@@MelindaMurphy As Do I...Also Woolco & Woolworths... Where I Purchased Most Of My Records Back Then...From The Bargain Section...$1.99 To $3.99...Some For $1.00...
Once again, I think you speak for a large number of us in the vinyl community. The resurgence in vinyl over the past few years has been fueled by unusually high levels of disposable income and people spending an unusually high amount of time at home. As people begin resuming their previous routines that spending will be spread over other activities, particularly if prices continue to escalate as they have. This cycle has already begun if you ask me. Have you noticed how many sale emails we are receiving from vendors who not that long ago were back ordered? Vinyl is bought by music lovers, audiophiles and collectors. As in any hobby there are those who look to unfairly profit by taking advantage of collector's passions. CDs are making a comeback and affordability is a big driver of that. Love your videos. Stay well
Another great video Melinda! Prices for new vinyl are too high. $40 for a single LP is way too much. $23 is my limit for a single LP. Discogs is increasingly dominated by scammers, bad policies & lazy sellers. I’ve purchased multiple records on discogs only to be notified it’s no longer available after I’d already paid!
Unfortunately, $23 isn't going to cut it for new vinyl nowadays unless you find a sale. The $40 price point is probably the new normal. Best wishes to you! Thank you and take care.
I generally buy vinyl from artists I love like Robin Trower, Marillion, Jimi Hendrix and Blondie who released a FANTASTIC box set available at AMAZON for very affordable prices - these are artists that release new material annually I generally don't purchase expensive re-issues or original copies (I have 1500 LPS) I'm on fixed income - I'm so glad you spoke on this issue cause its affecting most of us out here in Vinyland - Great video Melinda!❤
Dear Ms M. Based upon your highly sound (pun highly meant!) advice, your most ardent fan bought the Bob Dylan box in the middle of your video. I put you on pause to go do the Amazon purchase. I am glad I listened to you...and I am not selling that box no matter how high the prices go. Thank you very much for your wonderful service
This truly is the dark side of Discogs. Discogs is great because of how much is available for everyone, but at the same time with the Discogs format it only take about 10 people worldwide to jack the price of a record up 90%. ....and I swear, I don't have proof but I've seen this funny pattern, where you find a seller with a rare piece and they have already sold like 3 of them and still have one for sale. I think some people are making fake purchases and actually "buying" from fake accounts just to move the median price up. No hard proof, but a few funny things have looked that way to me on a few albums.
I completed ✔️ my Barry White collection at a local record store..and I paid no more than $3.00 for each of the records I wanted. Because I wasn’t old enough to buy the original copies back in the 1970’s. But, this was probably 10 years ago. I’m sure Discogs is changing super crazy prices for them now. I still missing one.
Enjoyed this video! I totally agree about buying original CTI records which sound great rather than overpriced re-issues. I think the original Red Clay records go for a little higher because its generally considered the best of the albums he did for CTI but I highly recommend the others - First Light, Straight Life, Skydive - which can all be found $10-20 or even less sometimes. Thanks!
Red Clay is a great album. I didn't realize the original was pricey. I see CTI records often and they are always a great deal. Thank you and take care.
The first record I ever sold on my own Discogs account was a clean copy of that Billy Joel Greatest Hits I & II back in 2013 - for $4.99! And the funny part is I couldn't believe someone would pay that much (plus $4 shipping) for it! It seemed like such a "bargain bin" record. Then over the next few years my friend who also sells on Discogs kept telling me what a hot title it was becoming. We both couldn't believe it!
All of your remarks in this video hold 100% absolute truth and are spot on! I have been purchasing and collecting vinyl since 5th grade, and am still doing so today as a retired individual. Like yourself, I’ve had many disappointments and overpaid many times over the years. When you have such a love for music, and are a collector besides, the addiction sometimes brings on such a desire that you go ahead and pay the price. This past year or so, vinyl prices have skyrocketed, with most selling at $30 or more for single Lp reissues. Like many others, I now too have put on the brakes, with purchases being limited, with with careful thought. Thank you for showing your examples and sharing your thoughts regarding this topic! 👏🏆😁👍
The price increases have really hit a nerve with everyone. It doesn't help that everything else we need has also gone up in price. I hope this is the high point and record prices come down a little. I certainly don't want the resurgence to die. I love all of the choices that are out there at the moment. Thank you and take care.
I’ve slowed way down due to cost. I know of a few friends that don’t buy vinyl anymore because of the price, I feel if they the price gets to out of control people are going to stop collecting vinyl but that’s just my option Take care
Sales have slowed down quite a bit. Record store owners are starting to notice. It's a shame but the high cost of living is eating up a lot of people's spending money. Thank you and take care.
these companies are price gougers at their best lol. i cant pay that much for records that are big dissapointments . ill just stick with my cds. great video as always beautiful melinda. hope you had a great memorial day
In Groove here, In Groove there, In Groove everywhere! I have the same shirt of course. Lol after I saw your video about the Bob Dylan mono box I searched everywhere and couldn’t find it for near the price you were talking about. Oh well, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Thanks for the video.
Haha! That's funny! This is a very popular shirt. 😀 I hope they repress this box set for a good price. It would certainly sell. Thank you and take care.
If the vinyl market keeps pricing people out, then it will get what it deserves. I love vinyl and collect, also have a channel where I feature and discuss it like you. (I'm at Amity Tracks). But I focus on the music first. If some store or seller wants to be ridiculous with a price then screw them. I'm fine buying something on CD vs be insulted like that. I generally still dig through the used bins and can still find great stuff at reasonable prices.
I would hate to see the resurgence end. Several viewers have said that they have quit buying vinyl altogether now. It's very sad. Best wishes for your channel. I hope you are enjoying it. I will subscribe to your channel. Take care.
Super video, I really enjoyed the angle you took, very nice boxsets, and collectables, I didn't realize Garth was nipping at the Beatles heels in terms of record sales, very cool, I think the first song I heard by him was "The Dance" Thanks for sharing, have a great week.
I apologize Mike. I made an error in this video. When researching the best selling male artist of all time, Garth Brooks is the best selling country artist. Elvis is still the best selling which makes me happy. I will no longer use that source for information. 🫢 The Dance is an incredible song. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
I do hope CD's make a comeback. I love the convenience, being able to skip a track if I'm not in the mood for it, being easy to clean, the remastering, and they do not skip or crackle or have a needle wearing out. Plus the liner notes. Rhino did a great job with their Ramones and X reissues in the early 2000's. And Rhino did a fantastic job with the two disc reissues of my favorite band, New Order: The Factory Years in 2008. In fact, I bought a backup table top sized CD player (easy to move around my apartment) at a very low price and was quite pleased with it.
I also buy more CDs again, but let's hope they won't go hype again for awhile, so they are very affordable. Once they're making a big comeback, I', afraid that the prices will go through the roof.
@@tracerx6324 Right. I remember when, in the final few years F.Y.E. were in my area, new CD releases at F.Y.E. would be around $10.00 for the first week. Then after that first week they would remove the price tag and the price tag underneath would be closer to $20.00 if it wasn't a mainstream band. Still, they did have pretty good used CD's as well that were cheap. Still, I did enjoy the variety of CD stores: T- Shirts, DVD'S, music books with TAB, action figures and other items to draw people in. I definitely don't want CD's to become targets of speculating collector scum. Like comic books and sports memorabilia markets in the 90's. Believe me, I fell into those traps and I still regret it. Younger and stupid.....er.
I think many people's vinyl buying habits have changed for the same reasons you have mentioned here. That's why I was always a vinyl picker, buying used and amassing a nice mostly OG collection, white label promos, early reissues etc. that didn't require me sell other stuff to pay for it. BTW, most Discogs sellers are not moving the merch. Look up any title you like and you will see many many posts for that title.
@@MelindaMurphy Although there are some great sounding AP and Mobile titles I own but I bought those years ago. Some of the reissues are really good and I like what Chad does- great Bernie Grundman mastering.
I do not get disappointed with the high prices of records that are no longer in print. It's like anything, the prices are dictated by supply vs demand. If I can't afford it or think it's price high, I'll pass. That's all there is to it. What is disappointing is the high price of new releases or in print records. I knew you were going to pull out the Garth Brooks box set. Too much supply vs little demand! Another example of record companies being out of touch with the consumer.
Precious supply is often taken up by people buying records en mass to sell at a higher profit later or people who have no interest in actually listening and just buy for collections sake. Both suck.
What?! How is “Innocent Man” not on a Billy Joel greatest hits? I think that’s a great song. Yeah I just shake my head at some vinyl prices. Discogs pricing mean little to me. A record to me is only worth what I would be willing to pay for it, and I have to be sensible about that. I hear all the time how “now this record is worth this much!”. Well first you have to be able to find that person who’s willing to pay that price. And you better do it now because I guarantee this bubble will burst. You always put out great videos MM. You have a high standard. Have a wonderful week and stay cool because it’s going to be a hot one!
Thank you for the kind words. I like what you said. A record is only worth what we are willing to pay for it. 😀 Innocent Man should have definitely made the cut on this greatest hits LP. Someone else said it is on his Volume 3 album. Thank you and take care.
In the theme of not spending a fortune on records, here is what $19.00 bought yesterday at a thrift store near me: Chuck Berry Bio, Dan Folgelberg Souvenirs, Wes Montgomery A Day In The Life, Fantastic Feliciano, Kris Kristofferson Me and Bobby McGee, Carly Simon Anticipation and Bobby Bland & B.B. King Together Again..... Live. All in very good conditions including the jackets and original inner sleeves, not bad!
After 50 years of collecting Lps, I'm out. It's gone insane. Beyond insane. New release Lps for 30 to 40 dollars? Used Lps are even worse. It's not fun anymore. I feel like a fool every time I suck it up and pay far more than I think is reasonable. So, I don't know. No idea what I'll do at this point. I don't like CDs. Maybe Reel to Reel?....
There’s also taping onto cassette from Spotify and the rest. I do it, it suits me fine and it’s a middle finger to the way things are. To the industry I just say, “This is the way I roll. I have to accept your decisions and ways? Well…here’s mine.”
I'm so sorry to hear that. I do understand where you're coming from, especially with the used vinyl. The prices are through the roof. Unfortunately, that's the way everything is right now. The grocery store is downright depressing. Hang in there. I hope you will eventually come back. Thank you and take care.
Hey Melinda! Great video as usual! My thoughts on this, yes, records have become really expensive and prices on Discogs are pretty crazy. I also have an issue with the scams that have seemed to pop up lately on Discogs. People seem to be allowed to advertise albums they don't have or that don't exist for sale at really cheap prices. This is a huge red flag but people new to collecting may not know this and get ripped off. Another reason I've backed off of buying albums is that many record stores do not want to be fair when it comes to someone selling vinyl to them. They offer maybe half, or less, of the lowest price on Discogs to purchase albums then sell them for the medium to high price on Discogs. I understand that they need to make money but the way vinyl is selling now a lot of shops could afford to do better when purchasing albums from collectors or when pricing albums to sell. These factors have definitely driven my decision to stop buying records as much as I used to. I've often thought about opening my own shop and practicing what I preach! Maybe someday in the near future. Thank you so much for what you do! You are a great asset to the vinyl community!!
Thank you for the kind words. It would be interesting to know what the percentage of mark up is on the records we buy. Perhaps the people bringing the records in are demanding more money from the stores. That would definitely explain the price hikes. Thank you and take care.
Complaining about record pricing seems to be the current trend in the VC. I’m reminded of real estate. In the 80s the typical home in my area was 75k. Then it jumped to 100k and everyone said the market would crash. Today that same house is 360k. The point: buy the albums you want and can afford now because tomorrow they will be harder to find and more expensive.
@@MelindaMurphy I think Taylor Swift and a few other artists have planted the vinyl bug in many young fans so it should live on. Crazily many of them like the music us ‘old folks’ enjoy so our collections can go onto another generation! (Which thrills me!)
Get Oasis Definately Maybe and Whats the Story? (Mourning Glory) Two great albums to feast your ears on you will not be disappointed and you dont need discogs to get them.Stone Roses debut 1989 another great album.you`ll not be disappointed with them although they are different from the Jazz Stuff obviously and the Van Halen and Kiss
There is nothing more frustrating (sometimes awesome) than a Record Store that prices by Discogs...but they don't know how to use Discogs or understand different pressings/variants. Sometimes you can find some underpriced gems, but I've often seen overpriced stuff because they just choose the most expensive pressing no matter what...frustrating! Great video though and love the discussion.
Thank you and I agree. Too many times, I will see a record way overpriced and it's because they saw an overinflated price on Discogs. It's way too common. Thank you and take care.
Haha I really don’t like Garth Brooks but I do love Country music! Love that Billy Joel and have an OG of it and it sounds phenomenal! Great video Melinda!🎉
Hello again I am not so much into jazz but you made me a little interested through the years. Shall try this Red Clay... If I see this Dylan mono box used..... Takecare.....
One of my best "impulse" buys was while standing in the line on RSD 2018 and I grabbed the first 3 Taylor Swift releases off an endcap which were limited to 3750 copies each. I've also bought all of the RSD releases since. I should probably unload all of them someday, but they just keep increasing in value which is nuts to a casual TS fan.
I bought those Taylor Swift records as well. I traded one for some jazz records but still have the rest. Who knew they would become so valuable? Crazy. Thank you and have a great weekend.
I always appreciate your videos Melinda. Thank you! I would not be so upset myself, especially these days, to see an out of print 13 year old boxset costing that much. I get the frustration. There are so many records all of us wish we would have bought when they were 5-10x cheaper than the going rate. It sucks, but that’s life and the open market. There are only 6 copies for sale in the whole world including eBay on that Bob Dylan boxset. Supply and demand. I do agree they should repress it. But just like the Beatles boxset, that was up for sale for a loooong time(for too cheap really)up until a couple years ago. Beatles box was $350 I believe back then and now goes for $1000 minimum. The Dylan 13 year old “out of print” boxset at $400 for 10LPs is not that crazy to see. Supply and demand. They should repress both really. Too many people want them ;-). Please don’t take this the wrong way. I just think there are multiple ways of looking at things.
I like your perspective. You're right. I just feel bad for people just now getting into vinyl. Everything is so much more expensive. I see young people trying to find records they can afford and it's really hard. I do understand that supply and demand is how it works. Thank you for the positive spin. Take care.
I find it hard to blame Discogs. People have a choice to pay or not to pay. I mean are Ebay prices better? The biggest Discogs scam are sellers that don’t know how to grade the vinyl or don’t truly know what version they are selling. As far as Taylor goes, it’s on the record companies to press the amount of vinyl somewhere close that would satisfy a large percentage of her fan base
I agree. The sellers might be asking crazy prices but the buyers are the ones to blame. 😀 It's easy to want a certain record and let your emotions overtake us. I'm guilty of that for sure. Thank you and take care.
I only buy a few albums a month. I have a couple records on preorder but, I’m not buying as much. Plus like you just said. Records are getting very expensive.
Hey Melinda nice shirt!! I have the same color!!😌🤘 Yes record prices are going up everywhere, yeah I’m not sure for how long, because I think people will stop buying and drive prices to maybe decline, I’am buying less and more cautiously now myself, great vid, take care👍
I love this shirt. ♥️ The record sales are starting to slow down. It will be interesting to see what happens. I sure want records to keep selling. A lot of people I care about own record stores. I want them to succeed. Thank you and take care.
Hey Melinda 👋 Geez! $400 or so for that mono Dylan box?! Woh… I picked mine up because of Rachel too, and it was about the same you paid. I feel fortunate that I’ve been collecting for as many years as I have. Otherwise, I’d NEVER be able to afford the records I’ve got now. They just go for too much on the secondary market. Like you, I pretty much feel like I’ve got most of the records I really want, but it took years to track some of em down. It really is unfortunate and discouraging that people who are new to the hobby (obsession…lol) aren’t able to pick up the records they’ve looking for, but then again, the hunt is a huge part of the fun. Bargains are getting much rarer but are still out there. Thanks Melinda. Great vid 👍🔊🎶
We bought most of our records before the prices climbed up. I do feel for new collectors. On one hand the selection has never been better but we are definitely paying a lot more. Thank you and take care.
0:48 - It's ironic that when vinyl was pashed out in the mid 1980s, in favor of CDs, the discs and the players were a major expense. It took some people longer to "come around" simply because they didn't have the money to replace everything and get a new machine - not to mention the fact that early CD players didn't last very long, it became a really hot mess. Now, it's looking like vinyl may be phased out again because LPs themselves are twice the price of a CD. I know, I know - inflation, I get it, but the resurgence of LPs was such a great thing a few years ago, but now someone out there is gouging the hell out of us. I'd just finished watching a clip with Bill Aucoin, KISS' first manager, who was talking about the solo albums. At that time, each album was 5 bucks. Ten years later a mediocre sounding CD of each record was about 15 to 20. I have a huge WTF for the recording industry.
So many people have mentioned that they are switching to CD's. It's going to be interesting to see what happens. I hope vinyl prices will come down from the clouds soon. Thank you and take care.
Totally agree with you on The Beatles. As I have stated a few times now, vinyl is way too expensive these days. For me it is the music that matters the most, so I settle for what is affordable... CD, digital downloads and streaming. I will probably look for that Garth Brooks box and get it if it is only $20. Remember back in the olden days when catalog titles would be cheaper than new releases? Whatever happened to that?
That's true! Every once in a while the new release might be on sale for $1 off. Lol. You should be able to easily find that Garth Brooks box set. Look for the Analog version because he put out three different versions. The analog version sounds great. Thank you and take care.
Hello Melinda! Great subject. We get your point and agree. We are also in the 3rd category. We have been there the whole time since we got back into vinyl. You know ; Swedish customs , import prices, ”luxury tax” , blablabla , small batches , blablabla and so on. Btw , I still miss that Zeppelin ”Celebration day” on the shelf behind you. Ouch , I got an envious-arrow right in my heart , hahaha. Take care / A&R
Haha! Your comments weren't supposed to be funny but the blablabla made me grin. 😀 Believe it or not, I found that copy of Celebration Day for $30 US at a flea market years ago. I never see deals like that anymore. Thank you and take care.
You have always been Concerned about the value of records and your records Melinda I’ve seen you talk about it over and over. I’ve never bought a record concerned about the value I buy a record for the music and nothing more. I couldn’t care less if it rises or falls in value. Prices will always rise on new records just like everything else it’s called the Economy and inflation. Discogs is a database not a store, that provides a platform for ppl to conveniently sell their records. Sure there’s flippers and high prices etc… but that’s just the facts of life with collectibles. Anything collectible suffers from the same thing weather it’s records, trading cards, pop Funkos or a million other things. You have to be prepared to accept the prices when starting a collection of anything. My buying habits haven’t changed because I’ve accepted these facts about higher priced records as (everyone who watches my channel knows) I collect a lot of different things besides records and have for decades so I’m used to it and desensitized to it. Supply & demand will always drive values and prices! Just enjoy the Music Melinda! Luv ya❤
That Billy Joel collection on CD is one of the best sounding CD's available. You don't need the MFSL version just the regular old release, just amazing.
I feel like records in general are too expensive these days. One record I bought a mere 5 years ago for $30 is now $90+. It's ridiculous. But the most egregious example I have in my own life is Colbie Caillat's "All of You" album. I bought this when it first came out, not really knowing much about vinyl at that time, only owning a cheapie player. But I bought it from Amazon and returned it because it was scratched and warped. Unfortunately, the replacement I bought--the one I still own--had a deep scratch in it causing it to skip. I didn't feel like going through the return process a second time, so I just kept it. But now that I am more into vinyl with better equipment, the skipping bothers me. But every version of this album I see nowadays is $120 - $200.
I remember that song "You're Only Human", and I couldn't stand it. It's not one of his finer moments. "We Didn't Start the Fire" didn't seem so bad at first, but when I heard that elementary school teachers were using the record as a teaching tool for history class, I had a very averse reaction to that news 🤣🤣🤣.
I agree! You're Only Human is terrible. He lost it a little bit towards the end of his songwriting career but overall, he's great. Thank you and take care.
Vinyl is a in demand commodity today, therefore the laws of supply and demand apply. With many of the specials there are multiple royalties/licensing fees to be paid, sadly the retailer then has to carry any returns as part of their margin. There are a few big corporations making a total killing, by producing limited runs which is what fuels Discogs pricing.
When looking for price comps in discography, be sure to look at median sold price statistics. Don’t look at current listings of items for sale. The for-sale price is based partly on fantasy!
i use discogs frequently and if im ever looking for records or a old box set i would normally use the category section and put the condition as vg or vg+ and i have been able to actually get them for good deals.
Running out of shelf space, so have to slow down. Fist covid project was a couple of two shelf/story record record bin/speaker stands. Plan changed and I built two more and thought I’d put my stereo on the top of the four pushed together. Too low, so I built a double deck CD/stereo shelf to go across the top of the four record shelves. Now overflowing the shelves.
I work at a record store and we sold one of those Taylor Swift singles after rsd over the phone out of state for 300 bucks, I dont set the prices, just work there. I question the sanity of some folks
I have the Billy Joel GH from the 80s. I glad I have my records and CDs I have been buying since I was young. I haven't spent a lot money for theses at the time. Since vinyl is getting expensive, I will be content with what I have. I am going to see Duran Duran tomorrow night, and really looking forward to this show. I hope you will still post videos even if you don't buy many records.
Hi Melinda Great video!!!! I do not understand but everything Taylor Swift is expensive. Even on Ebay, for some reason Taylor's recordings are more expensive then Any other artist and I don't understand why?
You touched on something we all can relate to...dollars and cents. I do feel much of discogs nowadays is overpriced...ebay is the same way which is sad. The same thing has happened with collector cars and basically shoving the person with a smaller budget off of the playing field. The idea is to keep attracting new fans to the hobbies...not making it a more expensive and unrealistic one for some...i.e. kids. I haven't bought off of discogs myself but have a friend who does a bit of biz on there but I do look up the prices and sometimes I am like what the.... Paying huge money...like Taylors Red is to me flat out stupid. No offense to her fans but its a few songs on a flat piece of plastic...If I wanted to spend 700 clams on something I would choose alot of other things before a record...Food and bills being top priorities...or saving for a vacation. I get why she is redoing the originals and havent heard the remakes but I do like the originals and would LOVE for her to have gotten the original masters. I wonder which way is more profitable honestly. The Garth Brooks set I've never even heard of LOL. Seeing what it has I wouldn't get as it's missing the earlier stuff mostly..Ropin' The Wind etc. A great video as always Melinda and thanks as always for the varied topics:-)
I agree that the Garth Brooks box set is perplexing. I wish he had gone in order of the discography. He still has several records that need to be put on vinyl. I'm with you. I don't get paying $700 for a clear vinyl version of an easy to find record. Crazy! Thank you and take care.
It comes down to simple supply and demand so when the demand is great and the supply is limited the prices go up. A perfect example is going to be the QR releases of the Steely Dan catalog. The albums are selling for $150 and some people are screaming but with a limited number when they are gone these records are going to quadruple in price wait and see.
Another great video and I'm glad to see you hammering, in a nice way, on the ridiculous prices of records. $150-200.00 for a record, never in a million years. Albums are meant to be bought and put on a turntable and be listened to, period. I have bought many, many records in my life but never sold any, whatever I don't want I will donate to my favorite record store expecting nothing in return with no regrets. Anyone willing to invest should look into Wall Street and not limited #ed box sets.
Great video and this is JJ under my new name cause I am now sober for 9 Mos and in recovery...to clarify Billy Joel GH 1 & 2 had Your Only Human and While the night is Still Young new songs on it in order to sell it...Billy Joel did put Innocent Man on GH 3 which I hope gets a vinyl reissue its has To make you feel my love and hey girl as new releases.
I have a few trusted sellers on Discogs that I frequent but the majority of prices are literally insane, same with my local record shops. I've been fortunate enough to find some phenomenal albums at my local thrift shops and flea markets, finding NM and VG + deals for anywhere from $1 to $10 (including a barely played original All Things Must Pass for $5) There's the occasional VG I'll buy for a buck and chance cleaning it thoroughly just to have a particular pressing. I get the occasional beater that can't be saved but it's worth the risk.
A big problem is it takes just one person to buy an album for a crazy prize and then all the sellers think they can get that. I have seen certain albums priced at $70 and now they are priced at over $200 and just sitting there for months. I wish discogs had an area on your wishlist where you could put what you would be willing to pay. Then the could take the info from all the people who use it and come up with a range sellers could use to get more in line with what it can sell for.
My biggest over payment was Tools Fear Inoculum. It is by far the most beautiful packaging I have seen. 5 LPs with beautiful etching on each record. It was initially believed to be a limited pressing, just ask Mike at The In Groove. I pounced on the pre-order at $180, currently selling on Discogs for $60, Glad I have it, wished I'd waited.
That's a crazy story. It's better to be safe than sorry if it's something you really want. The same thing has happened with some of The Beatles box sets. The people that wait a year are getting a great deal but there's always a chance it could sell out. Thank you and take care.
