The Swedish term for being agreeable on a community level is called "Konsensus" (to be in agree ment). On Swedish workplaces it also usual to have a lot of scheduled job meetings: meetings for planning, meetings for following up, etc. It is called "flat organisation", the company culture is that all employed should be equally informed of the company policies and strategies, regardless what role you have internally.

You are probably the first person i have come across that live in Sweden, but isn't native, who have really understood on a fundamental level how the Swedish society, as well as individuals, act like. Many outsiders could very easily think we all are some sort of hive mind and only following the rules like we are living in some sort of silent tyranny (this is just a very extreme example, and not any generalization of any kind), but it's all as you said, we just have a different way of thinking and expressing our self's which sometimes come out wrong when it's exposed to different cultures and idea's. It's both a beautiful thing and a really crippling perspective because we are always walking a fine line of wanting to be helpful, but also not overbearing or seeming like we wanna "fix" everything around us and look like we always know better than anyone else. This is all my opinion of course, it could be a wrong or right view but it's just how i see it from my eyes while still being respectful of other cultures and idea's.

As a person living in a Mediterranean country in the middle East, there is Something I have noticed in some European countries especially in northern Europe and western Europe like the UK and France or Germany is that they value privacy and individuality .Though some people open up easily to people they meet for the first time , some like to stay into themselves and have only a minimal contact with strangers uttering just a few words and staying into themselves...

Let me tell you a story from the northern, most desolate areas of Sweden: A couple of friends of mine were doing a journey through these parts. The road, E45, are nothing but forest, forest, forest. It's 100-150 km between the small communities, or more. Travelling that road, they stopped at a small parking pocket to drink some coffee and eat sandwiches they brought with them. As they sit there, in the total silence of the forest because there is no other traffic, a very old car suddenly appears from far away. As it approaches the place my friends are sitting down, it slows down, and then stops in the middle of the road, maybe 100 meters away. The car just stands there, my friends get curios about it and waives to the driver to approach or pass by, "all is fine". The car starts moving, slowly, and turn in to the parking pocket and stops. An old man steps out, my friends offer him some coffee which (always) breaks the ice, and the man tells them that he use to come to this place once a week, he lives a couple of kilometers away alone in a cabin so this is the nearest place for him "to get in touch with civilization" he says. My friends ask, why is that? The man says that he has no TV, radio or newspaper, so to find out the state of the world, he parks his car in this pocket once a week and wait to see if the long-distance bus route still works. If it does, the world must be still turning, he said. Soon enough the bus passed by at high speed and the man said "Now I've seen it, everything is as it should be" looking very pleased. He said goodbye and went into his car, turned around and slowly drove away. 1. He waited to approach out of courtesy, as "the place was taken" but there were no other place to choose within miles. He needed to be invited by the occupants before disturbing their peace. 2. We are, to be frank, poorly trained in social interaction, because some of us never see other people except faces in a bus passing by at high speed once a week. 3. We are independent, we mostly don't need eachother to survive, therefore we don't have to interact. 4. Those we have to depend on, we form very strong bonds with, often based on mutual interest. 5. There are nearly no in between, either you're family or a stranger.

It's always nice to hear your thoughts. You brought up some of Sweden's laws, i will say that we should be proud of our freedom of speech and press, it is unique and should not be curtailed because some are offended by certain actions. Even if certain actions are wrong, for example burning books, you have the right to do it.
@SvenLarsson123
@SvenLarsson123 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely agree! 👍In actually all modern countries the constitution guarantees the freedom of speech and also the freedom of religion. And it is upon the government to find the right balance in between those what shall be allowed and what shall not. ⚖ In Sweden the equilibrium seems to be more at the side of freedom of speech than in other countries, maybe this is why the international media have been focussing more on our case? However, I support the Swedish way because basically just someone has burnt printed paper. Nothing else. In this context I just want to add that "in certain countries" they will confiscate your bible at the airport when you travel there...

Quran isn't a book, it's a holy scripture, if you support burning it you're as bad as the ones doing it. Furthermore it has nothing to do with Freedom of speech, it's about political statements and to provoke others into taking counter meassures against political decisions. I for one is agnostic but i still respect 2 billion people's beliefs, as i hope they respect mine.
@HonorAndWisdom
@HonorAndWisdom 11 месяцев назад
Yup. If you only allow freedom of speech and of press for views that are comfortable and sanctioned by the government you no longer live in a free society. Either you have freedom of speech or you don't. There's no such thing as 99% freedom of speech.

Good to hear that you feel welcome and well accepted in Swedish society! I'm very delighted for you! 🙂 I guess it depends also on you and what impression you make on the Swedes: Do you appear as an immigrant who honestly wants to become part of their society (like you) or one who is going to be some kind of "troublemaker" (you mentioned the topic...) or who only wants to gain profit from their social system? So "What goes around, comes around." is what I mean and you seem to be doing it right. 👍😉 You certainly agree that it is the same the other way round and that Sweden and Swedish people have a good reputation in Germany and their expats are welcome here as well.

@Wael Faraj To answer your question (Something to ask out of curiosity...Do elderly people visit or talk to their parents and take care of them when they get older ? Or it depends ?) Yes absolutely. It is not lack of love that makes young people want to move away from their parents - it is a need for independance. We're still a closely knit family, talk often (some daily) and if we've moved to a different city we go home for holidays etc. The great thing with your children when they've moved out (yes, also as a parent you appreciate their moving out and growing up) you meet as friends, and enjoy each other's company on a totally different level. I love my parents deeply, care for them as they've gotten older and need help with various things. And I love my adult children beyond words. (and I smile a little internally when I notice they do things for me because they think I can't do it for myself = they think I'm getting older and slightly helpless).

Hi and thank you for regularly talking about your life and the experiences you are making up there in the North. Your and other expats' videos are really helpful to people like me who intend to emigrate to Scandinavia and don't know yet what is expecting you in a certain area and what you have to keep in mind when making such a big step in your life. I am excited to see how your style is going to become more "Swedish" in your future videos and what that actually means. ☺ However, you should not forget that you still got your own style and should never give it up completely to match the locals. Otherwise it would just be a masquerade. Maybe your style is something your local friends even like about you and don't expect or even want you to change? Maybe you should try changing your style bit by bit and see if you feel comfortable with it and how your environment is reacting?

Edit: Also thank you for all your wonderful videos 🤗 While I do think that the book burning is distastefull and immoral it's important to note that the person did not destroy anyone elses property. Freedom of speach is the right to protest and to stand up for what we believe in, including standing up to authorities . If we start making exceptions in the Freedom of speech law we will deny both ourselves and everyone else that freedom too and by doing so risking democracy in long term. This freedom is however with emphasis on Speach. There is a fine but strict line between speech and action; one can say that they wish someone else dead but not that they want to kill someone. One can burn their own on physical copy of a book but not someone elses copy. We're not allowed to physically hurt anyone or damage their property. We're not to threaten anyone or bully them or be hurtful on purpose. However we are allowed and protected by law to have and express our opinions. If we don't like the government or are against book burnings and maybe even think we should make public book burnings illigal in the future it will never be a crime to express that - and that is what makes and following and keeping this law so important 😊

Industrial holiday v28-32 is a reality for the roughly 11% of us who work professionally in industry as well as all service companies that depend on the industry. In my current job (since 2015) I have always had holidays v29-32 because our customers close then and leave us without tasks. I would say unlike others here that industrial holidays are still a tangible reality. As relatives of industrial employees want to have holidays at the same time, significantly more work areas are indirectly affected!

You say that you that Swedes dress stylishly and that you would like to join them. You may have noticed that we have a TV channel called TV4 and they have a program that runs every morning called Nyhetsmorgon. There, on Sundays, they usually have fashion features for women about what fashion is at different times of the year. Soon there will probably be a new episode which is autumn fashion for women. They also have for men and then this is on Saturdays. You mentioned that Swedes are helpful and we are, but also in a way that you can't see in everyday life, but that Swedes are also helpful when it comes to collecting money for disaster relief. Then when there was the tsunami in Thailand on December 26, 2004, when many Swedes also died. Then we Swedes collected over a hundred million for the affected Thailand, it is said that Sweden was the country where the Swedish people collected the most money for Thailand. So the Swedes and not the Swedish state. When Russia started the war in Ukraine and you could see on TV how people in Ukraine were forced to flee and he could not bring clothes and children's toys. Private collections of clothes, shoes and toys were quickly started on Facebook. So they got so much of it to the collection point in Poland, that they appealed to Sweden to stop sending more and send money instead, as they didn't have room for all the clothes, shoes and toys. Then they quickly started collecting money. Since then, there were and are many Swedes who opened and are opening their homes to those who fled Ukraine and came to Sweden.

Is it rare in Sweden to see young men or women who are single sharing a rented house with their parents to save money ?
@ingvartorma9789
@ingvartorma9789 11 месяцев назад
Young people are forced to live longer and longer at home because of housing shortages, not to save money. When there were more apartments, young people moved away from home and it was very common to move away from home when you turned 18. The mistake is that the government does not ensure that housing construction takes off, but the new government that came in 2022, instead removed subsidies for building housing. In 2015, there was a large influx of refugees to Sweden and many have had to stay, but this has made it even more difficult to get hold of rental properties and rental properties are becoming more expensive.
@currentoflinden
@currentoflinden 11 месяцев назад
@@waelfaraj6705Yes very. However, as someone else also pointed out - due to a shortage of affordable apartments, especially in and around Stockholm - it has become more common that young people stay with their parents a little longer. But it is very much a last resort, young people here value their independance way too much.

Of course, adult children talk to their parents, so to speak, and also go and visit them. Me and my siblings are helped to take care of our father who is demented, although it hasn't completely hit me that he is completely gone, but it is moving more and more in that direction. Dad has some help from the Municipality, but it is with him, giving medicine, making sure he eats, washing him. But he lives in a house so we take care of the house and everything else with dad, make sure bills are paid, drive so he can visit his friends. But he is unable to go and visit his brothers or sister, as it is too far away. As we do, many do with their parents. BUT this is not the case with all adult children and their parents. I have worked at a dementia home and there are many people who are visited by their children. They come when the parent dies. I myself have adult children who live in other parts of Sweden and they come to visit me and one has grandchildren who also come to see me. With me, my children can talk about everything.

I'm a rebellious swede! This is actually ingrained in the swedish identity. This is the reason why we are one of the strongest democracy's in the world. We have fought for our rights to get here! There is a viking sleeping within every swede, and once in a while he wakes up to rebel. When we see injustice we rebel. As you say, when it doesn't benefit the whole of society, then we rebel. Often when someone gets to much power we rebel. This is what you have to do to not become a dictatorship like Russia, where nobody rebel and just follows the powers that be. That means that you are a slave. Russians are slaves, swedish people have freedom because we dare to say no. This is also why our freedom of speech laws are so strong. We don't care if you get offended. That is your own problem if you do, not ours. Strong freedom of speech laws are also the pure foundation of a strong democracy. Without that, we will lose our freedom. Just look at Russia, do they have freedom of speech? Are the russians free? Ask yourself that..

Swedes are also very punctual, maybe the most punctual people in the world, in some countries it's like if you make a reservation or appointment with a friend and say 14:00 they are chill and could arrive at 14:15, if you're meeting a Swede you better think the opposite be there 13:45. If you can't be on time Swedes will think you're sloppy and unrespectful of peoples time and it's gonna be hard to befriend them. Impress a Swede?, be on time!.

Soo.. being middle aged with children and a partner living in a middle class area, you supose to meet mostly people like your self! Actualy I dont think this is more different in UK or Germany? Then it boils down to, how swedes coop with the climate, becuse we are different personalitys in different seasons! Its kind of runs around the year by sesonal festivities, shools holidays, and ones summer vacation!

So I guess she is going to explore the country more and more in the future and find out the differences between the North and the South, the city and the countryside: how people live, think, speak,... what style they wear...! 😉 This will certainly also be the case in every other country she has been living before and maybe she will be telling us about the differences she will come across?

No, not really. Culturally it’s not done. Living with friends sure and sharing a flat or a house maybe if you are young if you have no money living with your parents until you are able to get a flat but it’s considered quite suspect if you live at home after 25 tbh … if you have work =you move out. Living with your parents also means that you are not as attractive as a partner most people will draw the conclusion not independant enough or able to take care of oneself basically. It can also negativly effect your possibility of getting a job or a good job for the same reason. you need to have a very good reason and that it’s not something that is planned to go on for long and doesn’t. It’s considered something to be ashamed of.

Do they paint a picture that they intend to burn a scripture that’s freedom of expression that we call “yttrandefrihet” . We don’t have freedom to act as we like but freedom to express ourselves in writing or art 🖼️ anyway that’s my thoughts on that matter.
