I know exactly what that rattle is. I have a 2003 Trundra with 412K on it and I have that rattle on rough roads as well. The rattle is your brake pads rattling inside the calipers. The next time you hear that rattle lightly step on your brake peddle. Just enough to lightly engage them on the rotor and your rattle will go away. Good luck and I hope this works for you as well!

Huh, I definitely didn't think of that one! Unfortunately I did give that a try and I still heard the rattle. I appreciate the idea though, and thanks for watching!

@@JDMDriveway Sorry to hear that didn't help. I heard mine while on a dirt road. I kept driving with my foot on the brake with decent amount of pressure and just powered through the braking and the noise stopped on mine. Shucks, thought I had your answer. Good luck with your search and thanks for the videos. I am making changes, fixes and upgrades on my 03 based from what I learned from you....keep up the good content, much appreciated!

@skipmiller8309 you know what, I feel terrible! Haha I was just driving around today and played around again with riding the brakes over bumps that usually cause the rattle. This time it seems to stop the rattle! So this weekend or sometime soon, I'm going to take the wheel off and inspect the calipers. Hoping it's an easy fix with some grease and maybe a new retaining spring. But thanks again for the idea and I'll make sure to document it in a future video!

@@JDMDriveway Toyota recommends that you put a thin layer of silicone grease between the shims and the pad. Then a layer of grease between the pad and the points of contact from the pistons to the back of the pad. Then a thin layer of grease on the two pins that the pads ride on. This may act as a bonder or glue to keep the pads from rattling.....so glad this is work for you!!

Love your videos man. Ive got an '02 I just about stole from the dealership 8 days after the planes flew into the side of the WTC Sep '01 Everyone thought the world was coming to an end. Its a Limited 4WD Thunder grey. Had 4 miles on it, every bell and whistle on it at the time and has 250k on it now and its indestructible. 1st week I installed a tinted bug shield on it. Looks great and great protection. Love the average joe type videos without trying to come off as a professional. Long time Toyota guy, had several. Keep them coming. Peace

Hey there, thank you so much for this follow-up, as well as the recommendations. Your videos are super helpful and down to earth. On my 04, the tailgate paint was starting to rust, so at the end of summer, I removed the tailgate, de-badged it, sanded and primed it, and then used color matched rattle can paint. Around here there's an O'Reilly's that mixes good quality paint. I then used probably 3 coats of 2k clear. (2 cans, buy extra to be safe) It took me two tries to get the color basecoat to look decent, but the result with the 2k looks fantastic. The nice thing about a tailgate is that it comes off and you can either suspend it from a garage ceiling or just put it on sawhorses and do one side at a time. For me, it took about 1.5 rattle cans of the color per application. Yours is a metallic finish, so it might be closer to 2. You can also use Duplicolor, which is easily ordered online, but you'll need more of the smaller cans. It's also very thin and runny and requires a bit more finesse. Of the four cans I went through on my first paint attempt, I had a bad nozzle on one of those, which leaked paint everywhere. There's an Irish guy who has a channel called Mad4Motors and he paints with minimal tools out of a garage and gets fantastic results. Paint Society is another awesome channel for tutorials. I'm definitely going to try some of your mods out. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to mount a backup camera, which is why I came back to your channel to see how yours is holding up! The aftermarket handles don't seem to have a good reputation for build quality and materials. Take care.
@JDMDriveway

Thanks for the good info about painting the tailgate! The tailgate handle isn't super sturdy to be honest, but it hasn't broken yet so that's good. Thanks for watching!

The exhaust does sound fantastic. Just some nice V8 sounds but not obnoxious. Personally I think the re-freshed fog lights super interesting. Sanding on light housings is something I always stayed way from due to being scared to end up with lights that are scrached or not clear anymore. But I love to see that your work holds up so well. Turned out great!
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 11 месяцев назад
Yeah it definitely feels very counterintuitive to sand the headlights to make them clearer 😂 if you follow the process though, you can get some really good results! Thanks for watching!

@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 11 месяцев назад
I have definitely thought about doing a tonneau cover, and I especially like the design of the retrax ones over the bakflip which blocks your view when it's all the way open. I'll probably hold off on it for now, but if I end up upgrading to a DC in the near future, I will definitely be getting one. Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks again for watching!

Thanks for your channel. You have given me a lot of great advice on upgrades. I am the original owner of a 2001 Limited Tundra with 4WD. I only have 123K on it. I love this truck and have used it from taking the kids from the hospital when they were born to teaching them how to drive. I like your wheel suggestions, the LED panel lights, the backup camera, screen interface replacement for the stereo/DVD player just to name a few. I don't think I have your mechanic skills. How did you learn how to do all those replacements and upgrades? Your delivery of the video presentations is clear, relaxed, and recorded with great visuals. Many thanks for all your help, but I have to go now because I just saw that you have a video on slow retracting seatbelts I need to watch. I tried washing them with detergent and it helped but they are still laggy.

Just keep up with that timing belt and water pump maintenance (as well as the normal maintenance) and it will be good to you. 2 thumbs up on the video and upgrades. I have an 03 SR5 just broke in with about 100k 🥳🎂. FYI, there’s no need to remove the skid plate to change the oil filter. Just pop the hood and reach over with a plastic tub in place maybe with a rag under it and take off the filter and drop it in the tub. Easy Peasy ! 🤙🏼
@JDMDriveway

@Dwigt_Rortugal
@Dwigt_Rortugal 9 месяцев назад
I have an 04 double cab, probably a different setup because there's no way I could reach my filter from the top. Years ago I installed a Skid Row plate to replace the OEM one. It has a nice gap on the side where you can reach in and change the filter. The oil drips onto the plate and makes a mess, though, but a rag fixes that. The bolts were getting stripped out on mine as well, and my solution rather than Helicoils or nutserts was to just put a plate in that I almost never have to remove.

Did your bed cover come like that? or is it custom? I am debating on changing my bed cover. Also you have been so helpful for me, we have the exact same truck minus exterior paint and I have a 2WD. But you've done everything I've wanted to do so far! so I've just been following your footsteps! Just gotta fix some issues.. Also! check your hood latch and latch hook! mine failed literally 2 days ago! and they're really hard to get now other then off a junk truck. So make sure yours is ok! Keep up the good work! also, did you get that whining to go away from your engine? I could hear it when you were showing the old stock exhaust sound. You can hear it way better in the video where you actually changed out the exhaust. I've been trying to find out what that whining sound is for the whole year and I'm stumped.
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 11 месяцев назад
The truck has a spray in bed liner which I think was done aftermarket. I'm pretty sure Toyota offered the drop-in plastic liners from the factory. I recently checked my hood latch when doing the grille so I think I should be good to go there. As far as the whining from the engine, I'd maybe think that it's the alternator or potentially the power steering pump but I haven't heard it on my truck so I'm not too worried. Thanks for watching!

I know I keep replying to comments 2 months old... 200k is a long time to wait before the timing belt / water pump service. Don't wait any longer to get that done! Thankfully, Toyota's recommendation of every 100k mi leaves a lot of margin, but 200k is really pushing it IMHO. A new truck or an engine swap is wayyyy more money.
@ColePerrine
@ColePerrine 9 месяцев назад
Well, I have the 3.4 L V6, which is non-interference. So if my timing belt goes, I just need a new belt and it doesn’t hurt the engine. Otherwise I would definitely have gotten it done already. Money is tight.

I like the Trail runner grille sooooo much better. I hate all the chrome on trucks. If that were my truck I’d be plastidipping the front bumper or color matching it with paint. BTW you inspired me to swap out all my leds. Sooo much better now. I think I’m just going to keep upgrading my 04 rather than buying new and having a new huge truck payment to worry about. We’re getting closer to a new war unfortunately and who knows what that’ll do to our already shitty economy.

Do your upper control arms hit the coil springs at all? I have bilstein 5100s with 2 inch spacers and i have that issue
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, at full droop they do touch the springs and you can see that in the install video I made. Doesn't seem to affect everyday driving though. Thanks for watching!

I am wondering if you know anything about the tweeter speakers, in the doors. I am missing a cover trim, and cannot find it anywhere!! Thanks!

hmm, that's gonna be a tough one. I would honestly recommend your local pick-n-pull. If they've got a tundra or maybe even a sequoia that might be your best bet. Not sure if anyone makes reproduction ones. Thanks for watching

Is your bed liner "OEM". I know mine is since it has a big "TOYOTA" stamped into against the cab. But it don't cover the bed rails like yours. I'm curious, yours would protect the paint on the top part..
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 10 месяцев назад
No, the bed liner is an aftermarket spray in kind. I'm not sure where the bed caps are from, but they are separate from the bed liner and I think they are OEM. Maybe check some junkyards near you to get a set for cheap? Thanks for watching

Do you know any parts stores for aftermarket stuff for this truck I’m trying to make mine into a drift truck
@JDMDriveway

Dang that would be sick, I don't know of any companies specializing in that sort of stuff unfortunately. May need a more custom setup to do that sort of thing. Thanks for watching!

I've read that it should be a bolt on swap, but I haven't tried it myself. I have definitely seen people do it on the facebook group though. Thanks for watching

I have a 2005 Tundra SR5 and the instrument only has 2 wire harness on back, no option to replace bulbs. Looks like LED is directly on the instrument cluster board. It is very difficult to find a replacement LED instrument cluster with brighter back light for my 2005 Tundra. Any suggestions?
@JDMDriveway

Yep, unfortunately the 05/06 trucks don't have interchangeable bulbs. I don't have any suggestions, but maybe someone else will chime in. Thanks for watching!

What kind of legroom do you have in the rear seats?
@riverdog8796
@riverdog8796 11 месяцев назад
I love my tundra but have to say, No leg room. A full grown man of any size would have an uncomfortable trip........
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, unfortunately there is basically zero legroom back there. Even with the drivers seat pretty far forward I can't sit behind it without being super uncomfortable. I did sit 6 people in this truck a couple of times believe it or not, but it was not exactly comfortable for anyone 😂 thanks for watching!

the CO lights cause my fog lights not to work, know of any solutions?
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 9 месяцев назад
That's a bummer because the in-line resistor from CO light is supposed to solve that issue. Most people who do aftermarket bulbs have to add a separate resistor to make them work. Thanks for watching
@Dwigt_Rortugal
@Dwigt_Rortugal 9 месяцев назад
Try an "anti flicker" box that goes inline between the H4 harness and the bulb. For me, that fixed both the fog light quirks when toggling brights and the blue bright indicator not working. I wish I had known about it years ago.
