I'm thankful to these two men for the ability God put in them to open up the scriptures.I am one of those pastors who does not have the opportunity to go and get more learning and training.I find e-books and sales in the used book market to find books of weight to challenge my thinking. For me (all things being equal) a deeper study has lead to a deeper passion for the Christ.

Pastor Piper, Nature of True Virtue helped me greatly, and I am a layperson. It showed me how it was that natural persons really do nothing virtuous.

The Nature of True Virtue was the only thing that helped me understand the biblical doctrine that no one does true good outside of Christ.

So sad. . anybody can quote a myriad of Scriptures. .that's easy. . without understanding their context! Nobody is impressed by merely listing Scriptures. . that's foolish. . We are reading English translations. . translations ... not the originals. . My God! How foolish to think we can ignore the Hebrew and Greek originals.. Maybe that's why God does not give that gift of special revelation to everyone. . he gives general revelation to most. . Thank God that He speaks both directly and through bible teachers according to His Sovereign Will... there's plenty biblical evidence for that. . NO NEED TO ARROGANTLY LIST THEM! that's easy. . any concordance or Google search will give you that. . Thank God for faithful men like these who are being used to also expose the pride in others! The Holy Spirit is True to the Written Word! Love the teaching of the Holy Spirit using the Hebrew and Greek! Great video!

Christ followers, those that are diligently seeking him, will be better served by reading and believing his living word utilizing his promise of the indwelling Holy Spirit to bring His meaning of His word for you in your relationship with your Father as he said He would do.. This is in the spirit. A so-called or self named man recognized scholar isn't necessarily of the spirit. I didn't hear them suggest this once. As a result of THIER studies they proclaim to be in an elite rarefied atmosphere of special and more complex understandings of the deeper hidden meanings veiled or sealed mysteries, they didn't mention the Holy Spirit. Why is that? Did they achieve these deeper and anointed interpretations with their works, their will, their desire and with their mind? Whether they did or didn't, this video wore me out. As the second commentator here posted, ShownMercy, "All this has nothing to do with Christianity." Being a Christ follower isn't about learning what others think about Jesus. This covenant is about a personal transforming relationship and Christ coming in you. Bible first. Then maybe commentary. A wise man builds his house upon the rock. The rock is the chief cornerstone the builders neglected, Jesus, the Christ.

Carson @ 17:10 "Debates about justification." Every generation has this debate?? There is no debate. Read Paul's letters. ROMANS 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 5:16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

All this has nothing to do with Christianity. Christianity is not learning what others thing about Christ. There are many men who know about God, yet fewer and fewer who actually know the Creator. Why is it that we are told, "for you need no one to teach you", yet gather droves of "teachers" around us. Christ's sheep know HIS voice and don't have to listen to everyone else.

ShownMercy We see in John 16:13 that when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide us into all truth. Yet we also see in 1 Timothy 3:1-2 that the overseers or elders of the church are to be able to teach and also in chapter 5:17 they are to preach and teach. So they way that God has ordained it is that if we study His word, His Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. Yet He has also appointed elders and pastors to help and instruct there flock to follow what is true. God's plan is the local church and as Christians we are to be a member of one. And as christians we are to respect and obey our elders and pastors, for they are keeping watch over our souls and they will give an account. So let them do this with joy. Hebrews 13:17 God bless I hope you have a wonderful day. In Christ alone

You sound anti-intellectual which is typical of our day; it's like you are saying, "if you are called to preach - then skip school and just stay home and study Scripture." Each gift God grants people were intended to be developed with pure hard work meaning we need to study the Scriptures as we're exhorted in 2nd Tim. 2:15; for sure, but also make use of other people's gifts to learn not the ways of men, but of God as they back their claims about God with His living word, not their man-made opinions. Thus, I would not "throw the baby out with the bathwater," (so to speak) when it comes to demeaning scholarship that is filled with what E. Petersen calls, "spiritual theology". My question to you is this: If the Spirit of God alone is our teacher - nothing else or no one else, then why are we told we need pastor-teachers if not to educate the laity to learn sound doctrine and also to refute heresies? God built mentoring into the process of discipleship // learning; e.g., Paul to Timothy etc. (2 Tim. 2:2) Just because the Spirit of God is our teacher it does not mean we are not to accept teaching from learned men of God. How anti-Spirit is that? Now, having said that, if you are addressing the idea that "knowledge puffs up" like Paul did when writing to the church in Corinth that's another story. I believe genuine Bible scholars are men of humility, like Christ, because the more they learn the more they learn they don't know a whole lot when it comes to the deeper things of God. Just saying...

maybe you ought to change your profile name. Are you not trying to teach us, through your comment? Do you not know the scriptures for God tells us he gives us teachers. Don't take scripture out of it's context. Praise God for these 2 gifted men, who bless His church.

2. The heart of Christianity is to know Christ, "More than that, I count ALL THINGS to be loss in view of the surpassing value of KNOWING Christ Jesus my Lord,"... You can't KNOW Christ by what someone else says about Him. Put down your commentaries, turn off sermonaudio and stick with His Word alone. When you do that, your sanctification will progress.

More "study Greek and Hebrew" foolishness. JOHN 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. 14:25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 1 JOHN 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. ACTS 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 4:14 And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 4:15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 4:16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 4:17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. 4:18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. Matthew 7:28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 7:29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Matthew 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 23:6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 23:7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

"More "study Greek and Hebrew" foolishness." Because God forbid we want to respresent the original inspired scriptures in the mist accurate way possible! Are you seriously arguing that we shouldn't learn Greek or Hebrew?
