You kept on calling Corvo a character, but as I recall, he was just a pair of floating arms with a mask that, every now then, grew some legs. I could deal with him tricking other characters into think he was a person, but I was really surprised when you got tricked.

This is super late, but honestly there is no difference between Dishonored's Corvo and any other silent video game protagonist that has ever existed, including the beloved Gordon Freeman. And I don't want to bring out the strawman's N-word (nostalgia) but check this out: While rewatching Yahtzee's review on Dead Space, a personally beloved title of mine, I noted his claim that the game's silent protagonist, Isaac, was incapable of evoking any emotional connection with him because he never spoke a word. The complete opposite of my experience. Dead Space was the first real video game I ever played, at the age of 19 a few years back, and I still am incredibly attached to every aspect of that game, including Isaac. Since I had no prior experience with any silent protagonist, I found that I was able to project myself onto and even relate with Isaac. He really felt like a companion and even a friend throughout that journey. Now, Dishonored is no Half Life and certainly no fucking Dead Space. It is an incredibly flawed series (the narrative, level design, and morality system can suck all of my 12 inch dick) but one that I still had a lot of fun with, and I think it's unfair to criticize Corvo for the sole act of being a silent protagonist when many other similar characters get to be famous and beloved just because they did it first. It's a legitimate claim if done with context, like that of an antihero with a revenge vendetta needing a magnetic and proactive personality, but otherwise it sounds hypocritical.
@artisanmage5378

@@infinitypilot No one would've praised Gordon if rest of half-life wasn't so engaging. Razorfists point was that a revenge tale, one that is as cliche as dishonored, requires a main character to root for. And I completely agree that Corvo was not it. I think games like Half Life and Dead Space work so well as silent protagonists because they focus on external elements like environment/ events and atmosphere, rather than character and narrative. Sure people say half life has a great narrative but really its not a great one, its the experience and the atmosphere of going through it that's compelling and I say that as someone who considered it my favorite game for the longest time.

Dishonored wasted a ton of potential. I liked the game nonetheless and it's better than most of the triple A tripe we get nowadays, but it's sad when Dev's do such a LOT of obvious thing wrong right from the start. I'm glad you mentioned the absence of a clear stealth indicator. To this day, the only two games I know that did it right were Thief 2 (1 & 3 as well, altough I felt 3 was wonky at times) and Mark of the Ninja. There is no apology for not telling me if I'm visible or not. No matter how good your graphics are, and taking people into account who raise Gamma or play on lower setting, you cant just "assume" that I know which shadow counts as a hiding spot, and which doest. Combine that with the fact that Dishonored has some really weird guards, where a grown man can crawl under a table and be COMPLETELY invisible, but sometimes crouching in a dark alley behind 3 crates isnt enough to hide from these assholes. I didnt mind the Story THAT much. Altough I agree that Corvo is by far the weakest part. If you give eeveryone a Voice actor and then insist on excluding the main character, dont give me conversation options. Or hell, they could've made Corvo actually mute! Maybe he lost his tongue or is awkward around people. Would explain why the game literally masturbates onto the Skeletor mask in every promotional picture. It would've been better if your actions would influence Corvos behavior. And I'm not talking Conversation options. I mean in actual behavior. Maybe Corvo starts acting more and more violent if you go on a murder spree. Maybe he shows compassion if you dont kill people. But no, we stick to the tired "Evil players get the shitty ending."-tripe. Speaking of which, that is an audacity even from a non-story perspective. Half the abilities you can learn are lethal, or promote a lethal playingstyle. It basically means you have to skip half the fucking content if you want to be the good guy. Where the story fails hardest, for me at least, is the pacing. It's the old tired assumption of Game Devs that I care about characters, as long as the game tells me I should. You cant expect me to care about the queen, or her whiny ass daughter, if I know them for barely 5 minutes before they get hauled of and / or killed respectively. Establish the characters first, and THEN bring in the Drama. I didnt give a flying fuck about Corvo, his implied relationship or the kid. Why should I? All in all, it was still fun playing trough it once. As murderhobo Corbo, if you're wondering. But it's sad how much better this thing could be.

Here's my personal issue with Dishonored. The only reason to be stealthy is to get a good ending. Every other stealth game has something to encourage stealth, MGS has low health and finicky shooting, Mark of the Ninja gives you less points for killing and being caught.

Right there with ya. Stealthing through the game isn't challenging enough. Being a 'hobo skeletor', while an overpowering option, you can just forego indulging in certain powers like X-ray vision. Just using blink and your equipment can make for a satisfying action experience.

Hey Razor, i'd like your opinion on something. Do you think consumers and game media fellate any game game that even marginally possess traits that can be considered inherently "good" and ignore glaringly obvious problems and design flaws because of their lack of taste, corruption (in case of journalism) or because we are so starved for actual quality that anything that isn't part of the industry's endless cycle of regurgitation seems brilliant by comparison?

@SomeGuy-jd4ie
@SomeGuy-jd4ie 7 лет назад
50,000 is dead. TF2 was getting worse since going f2p, becoming a hat-collection simulator. Step by step balance decisions like the changes to the Running Gloves were made for n00bs. The emphasis on taunts encouraged not playing a match and new game modes like their horde were likewise catered towards noskill players. The final nail in the coffin for me was when they introduced the conga taunt -a taunt which allows an entire team+ to taunt simultaneously if even 1 person has it. It was a clear message from the designers, "we've long abandoned trying to make this a good competitive fps. Here's another way to dick around!".

The dishonored devs can talk about the game being a spiritual successor to Thief as much as they want, but it clearly takes far more inspiration from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Which disappoints me, because that game is a rough diamond that could have been great with a sequel to round out it's edges and improve it's melee combat.

I remember playing this game, having no clue what it was, beyond having seen an ad for it like, 2 or 3 times... And being so insanely bored out of my skull that I found seeing if the paint on my project was done stimulating in comparison when I turned off the game to check it. I didn't even think being Corvo the Mary Sue tank of a killing machine was fun, in fact, that was even more boring than what I'm generously gonna call stealth mode, which you pretty much summed up perfectly: Just be on something high, because you're playing the only stealth game ever where enemies can't look up, or at least land you in their field of vision if they're x distance away, and if you're in a place where it's not possible to always be above them, don't worry, because there's more riot shields than people in this fucking city. And every last one's out, just for you to hide behind. And I can't say it enough that the dishonored franchise in general is just... Unspeakably ugly. I can't even put into words how ugly this franchise is. Believe me, I've tried, but I need to have visual aides of every point to show people what I mean. The fact that Arkane thinks this is comparable to art from the masters of the 18th and 19th centuries pisses me off to no end, because the closest I can get to articulating how ugly this series is is that it looks like they made an active effort to find out what people didn't like about the graphics in late 90s games, and bent over backwards to only do that, and coat it in a garish stereotype of 18th century paintings. Oh, and before anyone asks: Yes, I am still a little bitter about the reaction to me saying I didn't like it was "Well, that's because you're a girl, and girls are stupid SJW cunts that are ruining gaming!" from the Bethesda fanboys, who only like it because Bethesda's name is on the box- By their recent admission. I know I shouldn't expect more or better from people who fabricated multiple rape scenes in the game, just to sing their praises, but I'm not bitter about the comment. I'm bitter about not kicking them in the face for it. Yeah, I'd probably be in prison, but look at what these fucks have turned into. Someone should have kicked their ass years ago.

I do agree with Corvo being kind of like an empty slate but in my opinion, the game world really makes up for that. Dunwall and all the lore and stories about the whole Empire of the Isles make for a unique setting. Even though the storyline itself may not be all that special and doesn't really have any twists and turns, being immersed in the game world happens almost instantaneously. So yeah... it's not Thief. It's very different. I hate the overpowered x-ray-vision and the lack of a real sound engine, too, but most of the other "flaws" didn't occur to me during the 80 hours I've spent with the game. Also, the two story DLCs are brilliantly done!

Dishonored is such a strange case where 90% of the mechanics, gadgets, and powers encourage the player to go on a violent rampage... in a game that criticises the player for doing so. And while the rampages can be fun, Corvo is so overpowered compared the vast majority of enemies that the lack of challenge will cause boredom. Typically guards in stealth games are supposed to be dangerous to, you know, encourage the player to use stealth. But in Dishonored stealth is the more boring option, and guards are little more than walking punching bags.

I liked this game. By no means a masterpiece, but most def an above-average game. However I never thought it was a stealth game until I actually went online & saw it being categorized under the "stealth" genre - something that is absolutely baffling to me. If this is a stealth game, then so is (the campaign of) Battlefield 3... So just as a game, it's alright. But considering it obviously aimed at being a stealth game, it is nothing but a huge faceplant.

I just finished it the other day (5 bucks on steam sale FTW), and...Well... Well, I had fun with it, and I think it's a good game, but it had the potential to be GREAT. And it didn't follow though. Any fun I got out of it was tempered with the thought "man, this could have been legendary..." which soured it a bit for me. The story would have benefited GREATLY from having Corvo talk once in a while. In fact, tie that in to the stupid chaos mechanic and make his quips change to be more callous if he's high chaos and more snarky/noble when he's low chaos and it would have REALLY immersed me more. The whole time I was playing, I felt like a visitor to the city, and not someone who actually lived in it. And while we're talking about the Chaos mechanic, I HATE how they explicitly say "High chaos will give you a bad ending", and then they go out of their way to NOT give you an adequate feedback system for it, so you're always paranoid that if you defend yourself from the 7 armed guys trying to surround you, that you'll shunt yourself up to high chaos and have a lot of trouble going back down enough to get the good ending. As a result, I didn't use most of those neat looking powers, which was supremely lame. I'm playing as "hobo skeletor" this time around and it's SO much more fun. I can actually defend myself, I can do neat things like nail the target in the face and then leap out the window and blink to the ground to get away. It's WAY better. Really, if they'd given Corvo a voice to help us identify with him as a character, and given us some way to better measure how far we were slipping into High Chaos territory, the game would have benefited GREATLY. And a few more nonlethal methods would have been great too. At LEAST they should have given us a way to finish guards off in melee combat with a non-lethal punch to the face!

You know what's actually the worst part? The "Bad ending" isn't really that bad (unless you screw up horribly at the very very end), it's just realistic given the setting. Dishonored is a piece of shit and it all boils down to this. If the fucking game world rewards you for kidnapping a woman and giving her to a psychopath who will rape her until he finally manages to kill her, but punishes you for giving her a clean, painless death, then fuck that game and everyone who made it. That concept is so fucking insane, I'm actually shocked it made it past the planning stages. There is a huge difference between giving the player a choice to either be lethal or non lethal, and punishing you for being the assassin the game was marketed and sold to you as. Next time, be open about the fact that you'd better not so much as scratch any of these evil fucks, or you'll somehow destroy the world for removing the evil from it. I played Dishonored for the first time about a year ago on Xbox 360. I agree with many of your points. I enjoyed Dishonored a fair bit while it lasted but felt it didn't really fulfil its potential. First, yes those looking for a compelling narrative from this game are out of luck, what with its fairly basic cover-up story and very predicable plot twist about 70% of the way through. I actually didn't mind the overall art direction and aesthetic of Dunwall, but there was quite a lot of texture blur and pop-up. I didn't get this at all with Thief 1-3. Also, for a fairly short game consisting of only 8-9 missions, I was disappointed to see the game reuse previous maps (or parts of them) about three times. I have seen Thief 2 get some criticism from some quarters about using the same map for "Casing the Joint" and "Masks" (both bloody good missions incidentally), so I''m not sure why games like Dishonored and MGSV have largely escaped this criticism for recycling areas for different objectives. And then there's the system for telling the player how alert the enemies are. I found those graphical awareness indicators appearing magically over the people's heads rather silly. I did like the fact you could knock people out and pickpocket them, but let's face it, that's been done before. I liked the level design, apart from the Hound Pits Pub, which was quite constricted. There was some urban stealth, some rooftop exploration, and the Flooded District was creepy and atmospheric. But the whole rat plague thing wasn't really developed in the story, apart from its token appearance in the various endings. The chaos system thing didn't really bother me that much, though. So I've done one playthrough of the game without really feeling an urge to replay it. The all-time great Thief games (1, 2, and Deadly Shadows) always keep me coming back for more, and the fan mission community for Thief 2 is great!

Well, it was bound to happen bud... For all the like-mindedness we have, Razor, this is the one where I can't stand in agreement. This game drew me in and its atmosphere was enthralling. Plague-ridden city on the brink of utter downfall. Sure, the art design is a tad off, but I admit that graphics have never been a big hangup for me. And you can use all your supernatural powers while playing a good Corvo. It's how you play that defines what kind of man Corvo Attano is and that's something I think you should have touched upon. Further, there's plenty of material laying around to draw you into the world and story if you look around for it. Audio players and notes and journals all serve this purpose, ALA Thief and System Shock. So yeah, this one is the only one so far in my viewings of your videos that I disagree with.

I feel the same way. Usually Razorfist hits on several key opinions and values I share. Honestly, I half expected him to be unhappy with this game. My view is that he has a strong passion for things of yesteryear, like 80's metal, the original Thief/Deus Ex games, etc. As much as I love those old games (and 80's metal) I didn't allow my fondness for them to prevent me from enjoying Dishonored for what it was. While it's undoubtedly accurate to imply that Dishonored is a spiritual successor to Looking Glass masterpieces, I feel it unfair to want for it to identically emulate them. Dishonored wasn't trying to be Thief, Bioshock, or Deus Ex, it was trying to be Dishonored. I agree that the detection feedback system was lacking (all we really got were a series of 3 exclamation marks that would light up according to the players level of detection, followed by an immersion killing audio cue reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid), I don't think that the stealth was just game killingly broken. If I am in the mood for Thief brand stealth, I will play Thief. However, there is a great deal of satisfaction, personally, that came with the options and abilities presented to me in Dishonored. Art direction is totally a preference thing, but I really enjoyed the look and feel of Dishonored. While it's true that the narrative wasn't the best I've experienced in the genre, I still found it acceptable. The overwhelming amount of thought and care that went in to crafting the city of Dunwall, the greater mythos and universe, and findable books of the game was quite impressive. Similar to how the cities of Rapture and Columbia are living, breathing characters in the Bioshock franchise, Dunwall is a character in itself. I loved finding new books to read, exploring the city, and getting lost in it's fantastical fantasy. Dishonored meant to channel the spirit of it's predecessors, games like Thief, Bioshock, and Deus Ex, but it never meant to copy them. It was a game about a supernatural assassin, and that's exactly what it delivered. One could adapt a Thief playstyle, going through each mission as a ghost...but with such a vast array of tools at your disposal, it was worth checking them out. Worth being open-minded enough to try playing as Hobo Skeletor and not Garrett. There are so many ways to come at each mission, each encounter, and each scenario. Numerous paths to a given objective. Branching narrative based on player choice. Addicting and competent gameplay mechanics that do what they are intended to do, and do them well. A deep, intriguing mythology and world to explore and discover. If you go into Dishonored wanting it to be Thief or any other game, you will undoubtedly end up disappointed. If you go into it open-minded enough to let the game do what it was designed to do, you might just discover what hundreds of thousands have already discovered, a new way to look at stealth, action/adventure, and player choice. At the end of the day it's all about preference. Games are made to entertain and to be enjoyed. If Dishonored isn't what your looking for, then you don't have to play it. All I ask is that people make up their own minds and not be herded or swayed one way or the other based off of someone else's experience/opinion.

It's because System Shock 2 was more well known. There is a System Shock 1, and it's excellent. But people seem to create a cult following of System Shock 2 without really considering about the first one.

Maybe if they had made the spells a little less powerful, or more dangerous to use. Like Blink making noise around you, alerting guards, or stop time make you unable to breathe (which it should) and thus drain life away for a while. But hey, stealth is dead and buried until Thief 4 comes out... which will be soon, right?

Scarface is heavily based on MacBeth (even so far as lending imagery from Kurosawa's version of it), which in it self is written by Shakespeare, the ultimate derivative hack who couldn't recognize a good story even if it bit him. Also the movie itself is a remake of another movie, so it's extremely derivative, and it derives from unoriginal source. Not a derivative of something so derivative does not make a good story.

Is "the appeal of a school bus fire" a common expression in the US? I remember Greg Giraldo (Rest in peace) using it in a roast at some point, and now I hear it here. Or is it just a coincidence?
@demoncard1180

Quite possibly. Additionally, I imagine if you go to the US and say "Good burger!" to everyone instead of "Good morning!" you'll be greeted with applause and tips.

I myself was looking foward to see this game function however a brief summary from you Razorfist gives me some good information before truly purchasing the game due to the minute details you do pay attention to. Hell the big issues the game seems to have with balance completely let me down however I would still need to at least try and run through myself before giving full judgement. I agree with Riocynn7 on you doing a "Let's Play" type segment it would quite a show! Either way keep em coming!

Razorfist, i know this has noting to do with the main video (Which i enjoyed by the way) but it's about the new silent hill movie, I know you found some entertainment in the first one to some extent, which i did too but what do you think of this new one. I ask because only min's ago I witnessed the World War Z movie trailer (Its a great zombie book if you didn't know) and felt disappointed with them throwing away the source great source material, so instantly thought about the new Silent Hill.

I personally really enjoyed Dishonored. Maybe it's because I love stealth games, but this was just fun in a bun for me. I was happy that you could choose different paths to complete your objective, such as with the inquisitor, you could climb your way up to the ledge by the windows, through the front door, and I think there was one or two more ways I never found. I can understand it has flaws, I hope they learn from them in a sequel if one comes to be, balance it better.

I remember the whorehouse and think it's a great example of Dishonoured. You have to kill someone in a whorehouse. I was trying to go stealth, managed to get to the roof, and discovered that none of the windows can even be interacted with. There's one window that is fixed open, and of course it's a room with guards directly inside. Of course there's a low-wall in the room for your to conveniently hide behind. Of course that despite the game heavily encourages you to take a non-lethal approach, the game doesn't give you a non-lethal takedown option. The only thing you can use are tranq darts, and ammunition in this game quite literally costs it's weight in gold. The art design was also idiotic. It looks like it tries to do something different, but the only thing it does it give women awkward looking pants in the name of progressivism. They try to make a copy - paste of the British Empire, only to make it so you can't actually travel overseas. That's kind of the defining trait of the British Empire.
