Dishonored (2012) by Arkane and Bethesda already makes walking its streets of Dunwall a pretty grim (if beautiful) experience, but despite still being a ton of fun mechanically, playing it in 2021 adds a whole other level of darkness to proceedings.

Thanks for this and it makes me think of Gundam one of the few pieces of media that gets the cost/tone of war just right maybe a bit too dark sometimes but Dishonored is a bit to dark all the time. Also, WW2 had 20 million deaths WW1 15-22 Million, the Soviets lost 6 million fighting in WW2, Stain over his rain killed 7-9.5 million people. More people are dying every day from war and dictators yet Covid gets people to take action... Point is don't worry about the death toll unless it gets to at least WW2 levels which it can be worse and we'll be fine. Yes every 1 in a number is important and regretful but until it gets worse we are "fine". It's almost over Vaccines are going out my Grandparents have the first dose and after Mayo(US hospital chain and the best in the world) finishes with the priorities I'll have mine as I have a weakened imusystem. Thanks for all you do and in life you have to prioritize and what to worry about is one of them. People are dieing and more people will die but like in war you have a cost, risk a reward... So take care of yourself, your family and make people happy on this channel... It's all I can do so I worry about that and if I may you should too... Thank you and take care.

The thing about Dishonored, though (and this comes from someone who's played the entire game about 6 times), is that there *is* hope at the end. If you get the nonlethal ending (spoilers), they find a cure. The Flooded District is drained. By the beginning of the second game, fifteen years later, the world is in a relative peace, and people are prospering. The first game becomes a tale in being the good despite the evil around you, and the benefits that come from that. Given current events, that is something we all need right now. Great video, friend. Keep up the great work.

@@dylana.9057 it is also worth remembering that the original dishonored had a pretty tidy tone to its ending. It's sad that games like dishonored, dishonored 2 and prey are all decreasing popularity and got poor sales. Immersive sims are highly underrated genre.
@autosadist
@autosadist 3 года назад
prey performed way better than dishonored (and dishonored 2, iirc) in the mainstream games market. many casual console gamers i know played prey because of its availability through xbox game pass too! i think sim games in general are on the rise, even if they remain niche. the number of people who are committed to immersive sims in 2021 make it clear that they aren't dwindling in popularity or going anywhere. arkane has multiple games in development, one potentially being a new dishonored or arx fatalis. if these games weren't profitable, bethesda and zenimax would throw arkane to the wolves its easy to fear the future of immersive sims, but i think they're going to be fine. id even bet they might be at the center of some immersive sim renaissance in the coming years, not unlike the recent retro fps renaissance. they don't do record breaking numbers, but they seem to exceed their sales expectations for their games, otherwise they wouldn't be developing multiple games at the same time just a little hope for you for the future. I think immersive sims aren't dying - I think they're very underground and will explode eventually.

Or was it because they were a single move away from controlling an empire, and they knew you'd never let them manipulate Emily? Maybe none of these. Perhaps that's just the nature of man." I love The Outsider, too bad they over explained his character later on.
@tTaseric
@tTaseric 3 года назад
I personally don't consider Death of the Outsider canon for exactly that reason, but I love the snippets of lore they gave about him in Dishonored 2. My favourite Outsider line is: "Then the knife touched my throat, and I knew I had waited too long... Then I became a god" because it gives us some kind of answer to the question we've been asking since we first saw him, but there's so much mystery there. His speeches in Mission 7 do drag on for a while once you've played the game a dozen times, but I was so captivated by his character at that moment. The one thing I don't like about Dishonored 2 Outsider is that Delilah managed to find his secret by herself after being banished by Daud. I would have much preferred if the Outsider took a risk in sharing this with Delilah, wanting to see what would happen because he just loves watching history change too much. He wanted to push Dunwall back to the edge, and see if Emily would do what it takes to save it. The redeeming factor for what happened to the Outsider is the line: "And there's no one left to say who will and won't be touched by the void's magic." A world where the Abbey's worst fears come true is one I'd love to see.
@pixlman

@@tTaseric I think Death of the Outsider is the only logical step forward for a sequel, (or just a story set after the Kaldwins), in the Dishonored universe. It would be very cool to see some action in Tyvia regardless of whether we get a sequel or prequel or something that runs alongside the Kaldwins except, well, far removed. Corvo’s actions do have effects on the world around him, as this is one of the core features of the gameplay: your actions have consequences. Thus, it appears evident that your actions as Corvo are not meaningless. It might be argued that even though there are consequences to Corvo’s actions, no real change happens through those choices. This too is suspect. While playing as a merciful Corvo, you can not only effect how fast the plague spreads, but also the moral course of the country with more equitable distribution of medical care and a more stable court. From this, we can see that Corvo’s actions not only had consequences but also meaningful impacts on the state of Dunwall.

Amazing video, as always! I must say, you helped articulate one of the reasons why I think Daud is the most compelling character in this game; his perspective, unlike Corvo’s, is one of someone who exists, and thrives, in the dirt of this setting, someone who leads a group of opportunists who have to survive (and employ themselves as assassins) under this corrupt ruling class. I found his anger and his exhaustion both extremely fulfilling as the perspective of someone who isn’t serving/living in a monarchist conspiracy, but someone who has had to scrape to survive his entire life.

For clarification, while the mass graves in New York have gotten worse since the plague, they were dumping grounds for New York's homeless population prior, since the 1800's in fact. Roughly 800 people were buried on that island the year prior to the outbreak, alone. It's not just New York either, every state does this.

They need a really good concept to justify another sequel. The second one was good, It had gorgeous art, great level by level storytelling and good gameplay. But the overall plot wasn't quite as cohesive as the first one. In fact, If the story had started and ended in karnaca (starting and ending in Dunwall felt disconnected from the rest of the game), and possibly been about completely new characters, the game could have been much better. I like Emily and Corvo too, but hear me out: ibn the first game, whatever the ending, the empress was gone and the city was changed. In the sequel though? the canonical ending is a return to the status quo. Emily becomes a better empress but that's about it. The start of the game should have been a change that can't be reversed, just managed in different ways. It also feels like many elements (the blood flies, Corvo and emily) are there mostly because they were there in the first game, rather than to fit the setting and story of that new game.

I stopped playing the division to finish dishonored, which I did last month. It's a great game so wonderful but it also made me sad at how much in it mirrors what's happening in the world today. I'd say the thing that might get you through the door to Dishonored is knowing it's mostly episodic. Each level is sort of self-contained, and the narrative, although quite good, isn't the main attraction. The games aren't too dissimilar to Hitman, where you can just have a 30min-2 hour play session on a map and then take a breather.

one of the texts that stays with me till this day from this game is located in an apartment in the harbor area of Dunwall. next to the shop and by the entrance to the distillery if you head up the building, there's a journal written by a mother. she watches her family dies until there are no more entries. you look behind you to see the family, lying next to one another. that moment is one that I think describes the world of dunwall so well, and feels grimly familiar

Even now when I play Dishonored I sometimes still see things I haven't seen on previous playthroughs. Last night I was playing the Sokolov mission, and instead of choking him out as soon as I got into the greenhouse as I usually would, I decided to sneak up behind him and listen to what he was saying to the woman in the cage, but she interrupted and him and said "What's going here?" then Sokolov turned and spoke to me, and concluded that if I wanted him dead he'd already be dead. Very astute of him. It's a small thing which came from me doing things a bit differently, but there's so many little things like that. For the last couple of playthroughs I've had every hud element apart from mission objectives turned off which really helps with immersion and with going through the missions in alternative ways to some extent. Without any quest markers you have to actually know the map instead of just following a pointer on the screen. I find myself appreciating the level design even more when I actually have to pay attention to it. Also not having the constant reminder of how much health or mana I have at any given time is a big plus for me. Not that there's any need to worry them, I just find myself not using powers as freely when I can see the gauge going down.

I just replayed Dishonored this past month and the whole game hit me differently now that our whole world in this time is facing its own plague. I felt an especially surreal chill when at one point I randomly talked to Cecelia(the most normal/mundane/forgettable/unnoticed character in the game), shared her worries to Corvo about how the plague might just go on and on until it kills off everyone. I paused for a good minute when she said all that because of how real and relatable those worries are to me and to everyone in this world we live in right now.
